UAlbany Baseball To Hold Alumni Game Sept. 21st
B-Mets Run Out of Steam in Thirteenth, 2-1
Binghamton had grabbed the lead first using speed in the fourth inning to break a scoreless game. With a runner on first, Darrell Ceciliani narrowly avoided bouncing into an inning-ending double play. After beating the throw from shortstop Alen Hanson, Ceciliani stole second, his 24th swipe of the year. Wilfredo Tovar brought him home by chopping a two-out single up the middle, giving the B-Mets a 1-0 lead.
B-Mets starter Erik Goeddel kept the Curve offense in check for five shutout innings. The right-hander allowed two singles and issued one walk over his first two frames, but left all three aboard. Goeddel cruised from the second to the fifth, retiring twelve straight batters.
His sail came to a halt in the sixth when he hit Santos with one out. Santos promptly stole second and moved to third when catcher Travis d’Arnaud’s throw skipped into center field. Gregory Polanco wasted little time to cash in on the misplay and tied the game with a sac fly to right.
With the game knotted at one, Justin Howard started the seventh with a single to right. Goeddel fanned Jarek Cunningham before handing off to reliever Chasen Bradford. The righty surrendered a single, but bounced back and retired the final two batters of the inning, leaving the potential game-tying run on third base.
The B-Mets put two runners aboard in the eighth against reliever Ryan Beckman, but failed to break the tie. The righty fanned Travis Taijeron and induced Ceciliani to ground out, leaving the potential go-ahead run on third base.
Bradford returned the favor in the bottom of the eighth. Hanson started the inning with a ground-rule double and moved to third on a sac bunt. Bradford intentionally walked Alex Dickerson with two outs and backed up the gamble by inducing Kelson Brown to ground out to third to end the inning.
Things did not get easier for Chase Huchingson in the ninth. Jarek Cunningham opened the inning by reaching on a throwing error by Josh Rodriguez at third. A sac bunt and an intentional walk put the potential game-winning run in scoring position for the second straight inning. Huchingson induced Hanson to bounce out to first to send the game to extras.
Curve reliever Quinton Miller allowed three hits in the tenth and eleventh, but side-stepped trouble to post scoreless frames. Jason Townsend took over in the twelfth and added two more shutout innings.
After his tight-rope walk in the ninth, Huchingson compiled a perfect tenth. The southpaw handed off to Kolarek in the 11th who retired the first six batters he faced. His run came to end when Santos led off the thirteenth with the rally-starting double.
Kolarek (2-3) suffered his second loss in as many nights, allowing one run over 2-1/3 innings. Townsend (3-3) racked up his third victory. Goeddel gave up one unearned run on three hits and struck out five over 6-1/3 innings in the no-decision.
The B-Mets (67-43) start a three-game series against the Harrisburg Senators Friday night at Metro Bank Park at 7:00 PM. RHP Greg Peavey gets the nod for Binghamton against RHP Taylor Hill. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:45 PM. Patriot Sprint Tour Rolls in to Ransomville on Friday
Top-5 Most Significant NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Moments
Earlier this year, we examined the top-5 wildest finishes in NASCAR races at The Glen. This month, we'll take a look at the top-5 most significant Sprint Cup Series moments to gear up for the Cheez-ItTM 355 at The Glen.
These are the events that people still talk about years later, and those which become not just important in the history of Watkins Glen International, but powerful statements in the sport.
So looking back on the last 30 running of NASCAR's premier series at The Glen, and in no particular order, let's start with ...
An international affair
There was a Colombian champion of open-wheel racing, an Australian road racer and a Las Vegas native and former series champ all dueling in the late stages of the 2010 Sprint Cup Series race at The Glen. Elsewhere in the field were two Canadian aces - one from neighboring Ontario, the other from Quebec - and a popular Italian racer who already dazzled Glen fans early in his career.
Juan Pablo Montoya's victory at The Glen was more than just a NASCAR race, but an example of what the series had become - and could be.
Foreign-born drivers enjoying success in the heavy stock cars had been rare until the arrival of racers like Montoya and Marcos Ambrose, who went on to win two Cup races and three Nationwide Series events at The Glen. But the race in 2010 marked a new kind of shift in the series, and especially on road courses.
Ron Fellows had won five races in three series at The Glen, Max Papis won the six-hour race twice - including the 1996 jaw dropper - and Patrick Carpentier was driving in his third different series at The Glen.
The Cheez-It 355TM at The Glen has been won by foreign-born drivers the previous three years, with Montoya on pole position for last year's 90-lapper.
Steve Park's first win
In 1996, Park was a young modified racer from Long Island who was attracting the attention of Winston Cup car owners. He was asked to qualify Joe Nemechek's Craftsman Truck at The Glen - just to get his No. 87 Chevy in field, nothing fancy. Park put it on pole position. Months later, he was hired by Dale Earnhardt to drive for the Intimidator's Busch Grand National team and eventually was the centerpiece of the legend's start-up Winston Cup operation.
Park was sidelined for half the 1998 season with injuries suffered in a practice crash at Atlanta. People wondered if he would ever be the same again.
He was better than before, holding off none other than Mark Martin to win the 2000 Global Crossing @ The Glen for his first-career victory. Park stopped his car on the front straightaway, climbed on top of his No. 1 Pennzoil Monte Carlo and celebrated as the "hometown" fans cheered louder than a crowd ever had before at The Glen.
Geoff Bodine's comeback
In 1996, things weren't going well for Bodine, who two years earlier purchased Alan Kulwicki's Winston Cup team and appeared poised to become a championship contender. However, Hoosier Tires had left NASCAR in 1995, leaving Bodine's bunch out in the cold. Meanwhile, Bodine was going through a public divorce that left him emotionally fragile.
Coming back to his home track at The Glen, Bodine was 20th in the driver standings with one top-5 finish - two years removed from winning three races on the Hoosiers. Bodine was in a position to gamble. He and crew chief Paul Andrews borrowed a sports car racing pit strategy that allowed his No. 7 Exide Ford crew to make one fewer stop than the rest of the field, and put the black Thunderbird up front in the final stage of the race. Bodine passed Ken Schrader with eight laps to go and held off Terry Labonte, who had fresher Goodyear tires, by just .44 seconds.
It was Bodine's final Cup victory, and arguably his most memorable."Hurts so good"So as you're learning, or remembering, 1996 was kind of a big year at The Glen.
At Talladega two weeks earlier, Earnhardt - the most durable racer of his era - suffered the worst injuries of his career to that point in a crash which broke his collarbone and sternum. The Intimidator was relieved by Mike Skinner in the Brickyard 400 and entering the Bud at The Glen, David Green was on standby.
Earnhardt didn't need him.
The seven-time champion stunned everyone by taking pole position on the 2.45-mile, undulating road course - feeling the sting of broken bones in his torso every time he shifted or slung the familiar No. 3 Goodwrench Chevy into the high-speed corners. Within a day, memorabilia was for sale around the track to highlight the gritty achievement, reading "Hurts so good."
In the race, Green waited patiently to substitute for the injured icon, but never got in the car. Earnhardt completed every lap of the race, finishing sixth after leading more than half the race.
The performance didn't just build on his reputation as the roughest, toughest driver in America, many believe it defined it.Welcome back!In 1984, the race track at Watkins Glen reopened following bankruptcy - thanks to a partnership between Corning Enterprises and International Speedway Corp. Two years later, NASCAR returned to Schuyler County for the first time since 1965.
The first Budweiser at The Glen set the tone for an event that would become a staple on the Sprint Cup Series schedule for decades. Since an estimated 86,000 fans watched the late Tim Richmond draw away from established stock car hero Darrell Waltrip, the annual August weekend is the largest sporting event in the Empire State.
NASCAR has come to define The Glen in the post-bankruptcy era, and is the longest-running event in the history of auto racing in and around Watkins Glen. Had the first Bud at The Glen failed to impress, it's difficult to imagine what may have happened to the beloved track.
These days, fans and drivers have made stock cars on the short course among the most anticipated events of the season, with a break in the oval track monotony and some wild finishes of late.
Late Lead Slips Away from B-Mets in 3-2 Loss
With the B-Mets leading 2-1, Curve shortstop Alen Hanson started the rally with a one-out infield single. The speedy infielder narrowly beat Kolarek to the bag after hitting a dribbler to first. Adalberto Santos tied the game by roping a double to the left-field alley and Dickerson gave Altoona the lead for good by punching a run-producing single through the hole on the left side. Santos raced home from second, beating Travis Taijeron’s throw from left with the game-winning run.
It was Altoona’s first lead since they cracked the scoreboard in the fourth. Gregory Polanco started the frame with a walk against Darin Gorski, stole second and moved to third when catcher Travis d’Arnaud’s throw skipped into center field. Mel Rojas Jr. executed a suicide squeeze with a bunt up the first-base line, plating Polanco with the game’s first run.
Jameson Taillon tamed the B-Mets offense through four scoreless innings, but was burned by the bottom of the order in the fifth, his final inning of work. Wilfredo Tovar punched a single to left and moved to scoring position with his ninth stolen base of the season. With two outs, Alonzo Harris brought Tovar home by lacing back up the middle.
Binghamton used more two-out offense to grab the lead in the seventh. Reliever Zack Thornton walked Allan Dykstra to start the inning and uncorked a wild pitch, pushing the B-Met first baseman to second. Following a groundout, Richard Lucas lined a two-out single to left, plating Dykstra from third with the go-ahead run.
Gorski capped his strong night with three scoreless innings. The southpaw worked around a two-out single in a shutout sixth and side-stepped a one-out double in a blank seventh. He struck out season-high eight and exited with the lead after allowing one unearned run on four hits.
Luis Sanz took over after Altoona’s two-run eighth and posted a shutout ninth, securing his 13thsave of the season. Thornton (1-0) tossed two innings to earn the victory. Kolarek (2-2) was tagged with his first loss since April 28.
The B-Mets (67-42) conclude their three-game set with a rubber match against the Curve on Thursday night at 7:00 PM. RHP Erik Goeddel gets the ball against LHP Eliecer Navarro. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:45 PM.
POSTGAME NOTES: It was Binghamton’s first loss of the season when leading after the 7th inning; they had been 57-0…the runs allowed by Adam Kolarek were the first earned runs surrendered by the B-Mets bullpen since July 20 (10 games)…Binghamton went 16-12 in July, tied with Erie for the most wins in the Eastern League

Schatz Dominates World of Outlaws STP Sprint Cars at Ohsweken
For the second consecutive race, Jason Sides started on the pole. He charged out to an early lead until he was slowed by lapped traffic on lap 11, allowing Schatz around him. Schatz then faced traffic himself, coming up on several pairs of cars racing the top and bottom for position, forcing the five-time series champ to navigate three-car battles several times.
Once in front, though, Schatz was nearly untouchable in his STP/Armor All J&J, taking the checkered flag nearly 7 seconds ahead of runner-up Chad Kemenah.
“We just had to figure out where the racetrack was going to be, move around a little bit,” said Schatz, of Fargo, N.D. “We started moving around and found a different line and got rolling and that was really fun. There were lapped cars racing each other and we were able to stick our nose in there and get past them.”
Kemenah made a strong showing, starting third and passing Sides late in the race to pick up second position in his Hampshire Engines Maxim. Kemenah was noticeably quicker than much of the competition, but was never able to mount a challenge against Schatz for the lead.
“We went out late in qualifying and had a good run,” said Kemenah, of Elvada, Ohio. “We had a pretty strong heat race, and missed it a bit in the dash and Donny got around us. But overall to come out here second I can’t complain, we’re really happy with it. Jason and I were racing really hard for a couple of laps, but Jason will race you really clean, so you’ve got to race those guys clean. This is a morale boost headed into Pevely, which is a really fun race, then of course the Knoxville Nationals.”
Championship leader Daryn Pittman started seventh. Early in the race he picked up several positions before it seemed as if he would settle for a top-five finish. Then a late-race surge lifted him to third as the race wound down.
“I would have liked to have had some yellows, but they said Schatz won by six seconds so I think anyone would be fooling themselves to say they just needed a yellow to beat him,” said Pittman, a native of Owasso, Okla. “We were moving forward the first few laps, but then we really stalled out. With about five to go we found out where we needed to be and got really quick. We ran Sides, McMahan and Tony down really quickly. We definitely made big improvements from our heat race to the dash and then again for the A-main. We ran third, and sometimes that’s just all we got.”
The third-, fourth-, fifth- and sixth-place drivers of Pittman, Sides, Tony Stewart and Paul McMahan came to the stripe separated by just over one-second. Sides held on for fourth while Stewart finished fifth.
Shane Stewart was ninth after starting 15th to pick up the KSE Hard Charger award.
Schatz’s victory closes the gap at the top of the championship point standings another by six points. Pittman still sits at the top while Schatz is now only 79 points back. McMahan is third in points and another strong run helps him continue to hold pace with the top two.
The series is back in action stateside on Friday and Saturday night in Pevely, Mo., for the $20,000 to win Federated Auto Parts Ironman 55 weekend at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55.
