SU SOCCER ALUM PATRICE BERNIER VOTED MLS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Former Syracuse University soccer standout and current Montreal Impact midfielder Patrice Bernier was named the Major League Soccer (MLS) Player of the Week on Monday, June 18.

Bernier collected three assists to lead the Impact to a 4-1 win against the Seattle Sounders on June 16 in the first game at Montreal’s new stadium (Stade Saputo). He was also tabbed the Videotron Player of the Game for his performance.

Bernier is the first player in franchise history to win the award, edging Real Salt Lake’s Fabian Espindola in a close vote by the North American Soccer Reporters. Espindola tallied two goals in a 3-0 win versus Chivas USA. For the season, Bernier leads the Impact with four assists and ranks second on the team in points (eight).

At Syracuse, Bernier was a member of the NSCAA All-Region First Team in 1999 and was a BIG EAST All-Rookie Team choice in 1998. He scored 16 points in 1998 and tallied 18 in 1999 for a total of 34 career points. Bernier started all 38 games he played at Syracuse and ranks eighth all-time in points per game (0.89). Montreal is 4-7-3 in 14 matches. The Impact continues its season Wednesday, June 20 against Chivas USA.

Men's Basketball Tops In America East Men's Basketball With 3.21 GPA

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The UAlbany Men's Basketball team held the highest GPA in the America East Conference, in its own sport, with a stellar 3.21 GPA. The 3.21 GPA was the 12th highest out of the 19 possible sport GPAs in the America East. UAlbany finished the year with a combined GPA for all 19 sports with a 2.93.

"I am proud of the young men in our program", said Head Men's Basketball Coach Will Brown about his student-athletes. "They worked very hard on the court and in the class room this past season. My staff did a terrific job as they spend a lot of time monitoring our players academic success and the results are always positive. This was a good year as we advanced to the CIT Tournament and had the highest gpa in the America East Conference. We look forward to continued success on the court and in the class room".

Alex Bowen Becomes UAlbany's First Junior USA National Track & Field Champion

Bloomington, Indiana - Alex Bowen wons the high jump with a leap of 6-feet, 10.25-inches at the USA Junior National Championship, held at the University of Indiana, becoming UAlbany's first ever Junior Champion. Bowen became the 10th Junior All-American in school history.

Although Bowen won the National Championship title, he narrowly missed qualifying to represent the USA for the World Junior Championship in Barcelona, Spain (July 10-15, 2012) by just 1 centimeter. Bowen set the indoor school record as a freshman this past season, with a jump of 7-feet, .25-inches, and won both the Indoor and Outdoor America East Championship.

KEUCHEL TO BECOME 25th FORMER CAT TO MAKE MLB DEBUT

TROY, NY- Pitcher Dallas Keuchel has been promoted to the Houston Astros from Triple-A Oklahoma City and will make his Major League debut, starting against the Texas Rangers in Arlington on Sunday.

Keuchel, a member of the 2009 Tri-City ValleyCats, will become the 25th former ValleyCat to reach the big leagues. He joins two other 2009 'Cats Jose Altuve and J.D. Martinez.

After being selected out of Arkansas in the seventh round of the 2009 draft, Keuchel joined the ValleyCats in July, and then made 10 starts for the team. In 56.2 innings, Keuchel gave up 52 hits and 17 earned runs, striking out 44 while only walking nine batters.

Keuchel began to make his rise up the Astros system, making it to Double A Corpus Christi the following year, and in 2011 was promoted to Triple A Oklahoma City. This season, Keuchel, a 24-year-old who throws in the low 90s, went 5-4 with a 4.26 ERA in 13 starts for Oklahoma City.

Keuchel replaces another former ValleyCat on the Astros roster, Bud Norris, who is being placed on the disabled list with a sprained right knee.

Eddie Marshall Returns to Victory Lane, Hebing Takes ESS Win

West Lebanon, NY: Another hot steamy night of racing action at the famed high banked ½ mile known as the Valley of Speed. On tap for another full night of racing action included the mighty Modifieds, the ESS Sprint Series, and a $1,000 Pro Stock ‘Bubba Tanner Classic’.

Times Union and Food Service presented the full show of events, including the 25 Lap ESS sprint series shootout. After several cautions and red flags, Chuck Hebing held on for the win. For more information and the full story, visit www.EmpireSuperSprints.com.

The mighty big block Modifieds took to the high banks for their 30 laps feature event. Out front early was the #55K of Mike King with the #16 of Kyle Hoffman. By lap 8, the #98 of veteran driver Eddie Marshall took over the top spot and began to check out of the field.

Caution flew on lap 11 for contact between Jimmy Burns #101 and the #27D of Dave McFeeters, sending McFeeters spinning into the inside front stretch wall. When the green flag flew, Marshall checked out again, this time with the other #98 of Kolby Schroder hot in tow.

Caution flew again for the #43 of Keith Flach making hard contact with the turn 3 wall, ending his night. Back at the front, Marshall was in control, Schroder was still hangin tough, and a battle was brewing for 3^rd on back.

But at the checkers, Eddie Marshall scored his first win of the season. Schroder crossed the line 2^nd, the battle for 3^rd was won by Brian Berger, with Donnie Corellis and Brett Hearn having to settle for 4^th and 5^th.

The 7^th Annual Bubba Tanner Classic Presented by DMC Racing Products brought the Pro Stocks out for their 23 Lap feature, and a cool $1,000. At the point it was Jay Casey in his familiar #322 taking early control, but the red flag flew on lap 2 for a multicar pileup at the beginning of the front stretch that saw at least 10 cars.

5 cars were done for the night, they included Jay Corbin, Milo Campbell, Rick Duzlak, Paul Rogers, and Chuck Towslee. When the green flag flew again, Casey was out front and in control.

The battle was on as Casey had plenty of company at the front with Nick Hilt Jr, Chad Jeseo, Robbie Speed and Jon Routhier all shuffling for a shock at the #322 and the win. But in the end, in true Bubba fashion, the 5 way battle finished like a hornets nest, with Casey taking home the trophy and the $1,000 payday.

Chad Jeseo had to hold on for 2^nd with Nick Hilt finishing 3^rd while Robbie Speed and Jon Routhier rounded out the top 5.

In the Purestocks, Jay Casey scored the win in PS#1, Lloyd Tomlin took the win in PS#2, and Al Relyea made a last lap pass to win PS#3.

VALLEYCATS TENTATIVE ROSTER RELEASED

Five return from 2011, 13 will make their pro debut TROY, N.Y. – The tentative Opening Day roster for the Tri-City ValleyCats was released on Thursday afternoon.

It features 24 players who will begin their summer with Tri-City for the 2012 season. Five players from the 2011 team will make their return to Tri-City including pitchers Jamaine Cotton, Juri Perez and Tommy Shirley. Shirley, also a member of the ValleyCats 2010 championship team, pitched in just five games in 2011 after battling injuries throughout the 2010-11 seasons.

Position players making their return include infielders Neiko Johnson and Chase Davidson. Davidson was promoted to Tri-City in 2011 following an all-star first half for Rookie League Greeneville, before going down with an injury. 13 college players selected in the 2012 MLB Draft will make their professional debuts with the ValleyCats.

Third-round pick Brady Rodgers, a starting pitcher, and fifth-round selection Andrew Aplin, an outfielder, were teammates with Arizona State, and will join each other in Tri-City to begin their professional baseball careers. Rodgers is one of seven players on the ValleyCats roster from the state of Texas. He was most recently selected to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-America third team. He led the Sun Devils in innings pitched with 115 and strikeouts with 79.
Aplin earned Pac-12 All-Conference honorable mention recognition and ranked first on the team and fourth in the Pac-12 in runs scored. There are three international players on the tentative Opening Day roster, two from Puerto Rico and one from Venezuela.

The team will be led by second-year manager Stubby Clapp, hitting coach Mark Bailey and pitching coach Rick Aponte, who is entering his first season with Tri-City. The ValleyCats begin their 2012 season against the Lake Monsters in Vermont on Monday, June 18. The team will return to “The Joe” on Wednesday, June 20 for their home opener against the same Lake Monsters.
