Men's Lacrosse Holds First Scrimmage of 2013 Season Against Colgate

Shop for Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl XLVII Champions Gear at NFLShop.comALBANY, N.Y. -- The University at Albany men's lacrosse team held its first scrimmage of the season on Saturday afternoon at John Fallon Field, taking on Colgate, the 11th ranked team in the preseason rankings.

The two teams played four full quarters of action, with a fifth period of 10-minute running time, to ensure all players got on-field action. In the first preseason game for both teams, there were no official stats kept, but the squads were able to get game-situation experience and a feel for what the 2013 season holds.

"It was a great day, getting one of the top teams in the country out here," said UAlbany head coach Scott Marr, whose team was chosen as the preseason favorite in the America East Conference. "We had the Tewaaraton Trophy winner here today, and got everyone some good experience."

UAlbany will continue preseason for the next two weeks, and have one more scrimmage - on Feb. 9 at Cornell - before kicking off the regular season on Feb. 17 at Syracuse.

Men's Basketball Gets Back On The Right Track, Defeats Binghamton 79-46

UAlbany had 11 of its 13 total players score at least one basket and outscored Binghamton's bench, 37-2.

UAlbany's (17-7, 6-4 America East) Jayson Guerrier led all scorers with 18 points, shooting 5-of-7 from behind the arc. Guerrier's five three-pointers tied a career best. The senior guard combo of Jacob Iati and Mike Black found a way to get the shooting monkey of their backs, shooting a combined 11-of-16 and 5-of-9 from behind the arc for 29 combined points.

A dominant defensive first-half for the Great Danes, as they shut down the Bearcats to just 14 points on 6-of-19 shooting. The 14 points allowed tied a season-best for the lowest points given up in any half, previously against Hartford on Jan. 19, 2013 (2nd half).

UAlbany jumped out to a 15-point lead late in the first half, 27-12, with 6:53 remaining. Guerrier hit his second three-pointer of the half.

The Great Danes held the Bearcats to just one more basket, 40-14, for the final 6:46 in the first half. Iati led all scorers at the half with 13 points.

More of the same continued in the second half, as UAlbany extended its lead to as high as 37, 68-31, with 7:32 left. During that stretch, junior college transfers DJ Evans and Gary Johnson hooked up for a highlight alley-oop with 11:14 remaining in the contest.

The night was capped with freshman walk-on guard Reece Williams scoring his first career bucket for the Great Danes 79th point.

The Great Danes‘ 23 assists was one assist shy of a season-best, which was recorded against South Carolina State (24) on Nov. 20, 2012. As a team, UAlbany shot 47.8 percent (11-23) from behind the arc.
UAlbany hits the road for two games, beginning with UMBC on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at the RAC. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Humberstone adds Big Block/358 Modifieds and Pro Late Models to weekly schedule

PORT COLBORNE, ONTARIO - For the 2013 season, Humberstone Speedway is expanding its offering of DIRTcar races, adding DIRTcar UMP Pro Late Models to the weekly racing card as well as eight DIRTcar Modified shows to the schedule. The speedway will also continue it's long running tradition of DIRTcar Sportsman Modified competition on a weekly basis.

Shop for Official 2013 Daytona 500 Fan Merchandise at Store.NASCAR.comFor the eight Modified events, both 358-Modified and Big Block Modified drivers can compete and earn home track and Safety-Kleen points. Points will be awarded separately for each division based on finishing position. As part of the Safety-Kleen Championship, Modified racers can earn points at tracks close to home which will then be counted toward a region-wide points competition. In 2012, Brett Hearn won the Big-Block Modified Safety-Kleen Championship, taking home $7,500 in cash plus $2,500 from VP Racing Fuels, and Dale Planck won the 358-Modified Safety-Kleen Championship, earning $3,000 from the point fund plus $1,000 from VP Racing Fuels.

By adding DIRTcar Pro Late Models, Humberstone Speedway joins Brighton Speedway in nearby Brighton, Ontario, as two tracks in the Northern States region offering the division. Competing at both tracks may put the national championship within reach for area racers. Last year's DIRTcar Pro Late Model National Championship winner, Bobby Dauderman of Alhambra, Ill., earned a total of 1,487 points competing in 20 shows to take home a $10,000 prize.

"It's great to see tracks like Humberstone Speedway continue to develop their DIRTcar relationship as they expand their weekly racing program. The fans will truly benefit as the region's race teams will have more opportunities to compete," said Joe Skotnicki, Director of Series and Sanctioning for DIRTcar Northeast. "These additions will be especially helpful for some of our western New York racers and Canadian racers, giving them a chance to race in weekly events at a track close to home."

Humberstone Speedway races Sunday nights starting at 6 p.m. For more information about weekly racing at Humberstone Speedway, visit the track website at http://humberstonespeedway.com .
