APPEL TO MAKE PROFESSIONAL DEBUT IN TRI-CITY ON JULY 5TH

2013 First Overall Pick highest drafted player ever to don ValleyCat uniform

Free Shipping on all orders over $99 BaseballExpress.comTROY, NY- Mark Appel, who was taken with the first overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft by the Astros, will make his professional debut with the Tri-City ValleyCats on July 5th against the Lowell Spinners.

Appel, a Stanford University graduate, was selected as the first pick by Houston on June 6th, after a senior season in which he went 10-4 with a 2.12 ERA for the Cardinal. In his four years at Stanford, Appel set the school record for strikeouts, with 372.

Appel will be the highest drafted player, and fourth first round pick of Houston in the past six years, to appear with the ValleyCats. In 2008, 10th overall pick Jason Castro, another Stanford product, played in 39 games with the ValleyCats. 2008 38th overall pick Jordan Lyles also pitched in two games that season for the ‘Cats. Two years later, George Springer, the 11th overall pick of the 2011 draft, appeared in eight games in Tri-City.

The Astros held a press conference on June 19th to announce the signing of Appel, during which Houston General Manager Jeff Luhnow said he “would like to see” the right-hander begin his professional career with the ValleyCats. Tuesday’s announcement made it official that July 5th in Tri-City will mark the start of Appel’s journey through the minor leagues on the way to Minute Maid Park in Houston.

Appel, a Houston native, was drafted by the Pirates with the 8th overall pick in the 2012 draft, but opted to return to Stanford for his senior season. That gamble paid off, as his hometown team couldn’t pass on him with the first choice in this year’s draft. During his introductory press conference, Appel announced “I guess I’m home.”

The 6’5”, 215 pound hurler will join Tri-City as one of the most decorated college pitchers in recent history. His honors over his time at Stanford include two First-Team All-Pac 12 selections, a First-Team All-American nod from Louisville Slugger in 2013, and the 2013 Pac-12 Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year award recipient.

Tickets are expected to go fast for Appel’s scheduled start, and are available for purchase by calling the ValleyCats box office at 518-629-CATS, online at tcvalleycats.com, or by visiting the Joseph L. Bruno Stadium box office .

American East Conference Officially Welcomes UMass Lowell

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The America East Conference officially welcomes UMass Lowell on Monday, July 1, four months after the announcement that the River Hawks would be elevating their athletic programs to Division I and join the America East at Tsongas Arena on February, 14.

10% off VPX Sports REDLINE XTREME ENERGY + FREE Shipping on $50+ CODERED10FSThe America East Board of Presidents unanimously approved accepting the University of Massachusetts Lowell as a member of the conference. The move also received the unanimous support of UMass Lowell’s Faculty Senate Executive Committee and Student Government Association.

“UMass Lowell is an outstanding addition to our membership and an ideal fit for America East,” Stony Brook University President and Chairman of the America East Board of Presidents Dr. Samuel L. Stanley said. “It is a public research university within our conference’s geographic footprint that highly values academics while also excelling in athletics.”

“UMass Lowell is proud to have been chosen to join the America East Conference, not just on the basis of the strengths of our outstanding athletics programs and facilities, but also because of the university’s excellence in academics, research and vibrant campus life,” said UMass Lowell Chancellor Marty Meehan.

With the move to America East, the 16,300-student UMass Lowell will join institutions in America East that are of similar size and are also four-year research universities, the majority of which are public. Those include the University of Maine, University of New Hampshire and University of Vermont, already fellow members of Division I Hockey East with UMass Lowell.

UMass Lowell will begin competing in 14 sports in the 2013-14 academic year, but will not be eligible for postseason play while it completes the four-year NCAA reclassification from Division II to Division I. The River Hawks will be full Division I members of America East for the 2017-18 academic year.

As a full member of America East, UMass Lowell will join the University at Albany, Binghamton University, University of Hartford, University of Maine, University of Maryland Baltimore County, University of New Hampshire, Stony Brook University and University of Vermont. In addition, Fairfield University and Providence College are associate members of America East in field hockey and volleyball, respectively.

UMass Lowell, with more than 88 degree programs in its six colleges, is ranked as one of the top 100 public universities in the nation and as a top tier national university by U.S. News & World Report. All of UMass Lowell’s peer institutions, based on similar academic and research profiles, compete at the Division I level in athletics. Enrollment at the university has increased 40 percent in the last five years, while diversity and academic credentials of students have increased dramatically. The university has broken records in each of those years for the number of students receiving diplomas, and students on athletic teams have graduated at a higher rate than those who are not over the last 10 years. UMass Lowell –with 75,000 graduates earning among the top mid-career and starting salaries in New England, according to PayScale.com -- has been recognized by the Carnegie Foundation and President Obama’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for community and campus engagement.

Carey Terrance Takes Super DIRTcar Series Win at Cornwall

Hogansburg Driver Works His Way to the Lead, Beating Hebert and Whittaker to the Finish

10% off VPX Sports REDLINE XTREME ENERGY + FREE Shipping on $50+ CODERED10FSCORNWALL, ONTARIO - Monday, July 1 - Persistence paid off Sunday night for Carey Terrance, who, after a dramatic late-race pass for the lead, claimed the Super DIRTcar Series victory at Cornwall Motor Speedway.

An impressive total of 58 entries competed for a spot in the Sunday's 30-car feature, and Terrance kept ahead, claiming a win in his heat race and drawing the ninth starting spot. He worked his way up to the top five by lap 50, and in lap 86 challenged David Hebert for the lead. His first challenge faltered when nearby cars collided to bring out a caution, but Terrance was not willing to give up, pulling up outside Hebert on the backstretch in lap 89 and passing him for the lead in turns 3 and 3.

"I just took my time with the race, and as the night went on, the tires got better," Terrance said, adding that multiple cautions late in the race worked in his favor. "I think [Hebert] cooled his tires there at the end. We got the advantage over him at the last restart, and the car was just good after that."

While Terrance, of Hogansburg, N. Y., spent the first half of the 100-lapper working up to the top five, Bobby Varin and Billy Dunn battled for a spot at the front of the pack. Polesitter Varin, of Johnstown, N. Y., took the initial lead at the green flag, but Dunn, of Watertown, N. Y., found the opportunity to pass him off a lap 9 restart.

Dunn clung to his position for the next 45 caution-free laps, successfully maneuvering lapped traffic to carve out a hefty lead over Varin. The yellow flag waved in lap 55, bringing the field together, but Dunn managed to stay ahead on the double-file restart. Behind him, Whittaker and Varin fought for second, with Whittaker claiming it in lap 50 only to lose it to Hebert off a restart in lap 64.

In lap 69, the Number One Speed Shop No. 49 slowed, and Dunn fell behind both Hebert and Whittaker to third. Experiencing mechanical issues, he pit under caution, managing to just barely make it back to the track before the green. Dunn finished 23rd overall.

Meanwhile, Terrance, who had been in fourth place since lap 50, charged ahead at a lap 73 restart to claim second over Whittaker and defending series champion Matt Sheppard. The last quarter of the race became a battle between Hebert and Terrance. After multiple attempts to challenge Hebert, Terrance won out in the end, taking the win.

A weekly competitor at Cornwall, Terrance said he was pleased with a victory at his home track, especially less-than-stelar finishes.

"We had a bad couple weekends. We've been leading the race and going off the track and stuff like that," said Terrance, whose 12th- and 16th-place finishes in 358-Modified features at Cornwall certainly pale in comparison to a prestigious Super DIRTcar Series wins. "It's definitely a good one for the guys, to redeem ourselves."

Hebert maintained his position to finish second and Whittaker finished third. Sheppard started 12th and finished fourth and Jimmy Phelps, of Baldwinsville, N. Y., started eighth and finished fifth. Rounding out the top ten are Erick Rudolph in sixth, Mat Williamson in seventh, Danny O'Brien in eighth, Stephan LaFrance in ninth, and Dale Planck in tenth.

Third-place finisher Whittaker said he was happy with a podium finish, and hopes for a repeat during tomorrow's DIRTcar 358-Modified Series race later today at Cornwall Motor Speedway.

"I was gunning for the win, but I can't complain with a top-three in a Big-Block Modified series race," said Whittaker, of Iroquois, Ontario. "I'm proud of everybody and I'm hoping we can do the same tomorrow."

Joining the 358-Modified Series for Cornwall's Canada Day special will be the DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Series and the DIRTcar Pro Stock Series. Competitor pits open at 1 p.m. and grandstand gates at 2 p.m., with racing scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

The Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modified tour continues with Brett Hearn's The Big Show 5 at Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta, N. Y. The race night, promoted by Big-Block Modified No. 20 driver and seven-time Super DIRTcar Series champion Brett Hearn, also features the DIRTcar Pro Stock Series.

Kyle Sheldon Returns After 6 year Drought! - LVS

West Lebanon, NY: Take a little bit of hot summer sun, throw in a little dirt, mixed with some fireworks, and what you get is yet another exciting night of racing action at the famed ½ mile dirt high banked oval known as the Valley of Speed! Lebanon Valley Speedway, Berkshire Bank and Armory Garage present the night's racing action to a packed house!

Last Saturday night Eddie Marshall broke the strong hold of Brett Hearn and Andy Bachetti in the Big Block Modified division. Would the same hold true for this week, or would we see another repeat winner?

Steve Hough and Kim Lavoy brought the all #34 front row to green for the 30 lap Big Block Modified feature event. Hough’s #34 took control of the field and held the top spot for quite a while. That is until a pair of #42’s made their way to the front of the field.

Matt Pupello in his #42P and Kyle Sheldon aboard his #42S ran down Hough and began to challenge for the lead. But by lap 17, Sheldon made a daring move going 3 wide into turn 1 to take the lead away, and pulled away from his challengers.

Even a late race charge by Brett Hearn could not deny Sheldon from the win. At the checkers Sheldon scored his first win since 2006! Hearn finished 2nd, followed by Pupello, Kenny Tremont Jr, and Hough to round out the top 5.

RockPaperPhoto.com offers a definitive collection of pop culture fine art photography. Our extensive online gallery features rarely-seen prints of your favorite artists, hand-signed by the photographers. The new Small Block Modified division took to the high banks for their 24 lap feature event next. Out front early was the #250 of Alan Houghtaling over the #88JR of Olden Dwyer. But back in the pack, the #34 of Steve Hough was making his way to the front of the class.

By lap 16, Hough darted past the #250, and on to the victory. A hard charging Brett Haas had to settle for 2nd, followed by Houghtaling, Chad Pierce and Kory Sandstedt.

The 20 Lap Pro Stock full-fendered feature saw plenty of racing action as well. In the closing laps, the #78 of Paul LaRochelle held off a last lap sprint to the checkers by the #8 of Jay Corbin to take the victory.

Corbin had to settle for 2nd, Frank Twing, Jason Casey, and Jay Casey completed the top 5 finishers.

In the very popular Budget Sportsman 20 lap feature, Ricky Davis’ #43 held on to the early lead over the 29 car field. But a series of early race cautions kept the field close, and allowed the #74 of Chris Lynch to take over the lead by lap 6.

Lynch’s lead was also constant in jeopardy as the caution kept coming, keeping the field right on his door step. That allowed the #1 of Tyler Dippel to get past Lynch by lap 16 to take over the top. The cautions flew again, but this time, Dippel was in control, and held on to take the victory.

Lynch had to settle for 2nd, Peter Carlotto battled his was to 3rd, with Alan Houghtaling and Matt Papa rounding out the top 5.

Earlier in the night, the Purestock features hit the speedway with Richard Puff taking Purestock #1. Dave Stickles scored the win in PS#2, and Daniel Sanchez drove through the field to take the win in Purestock #3.

Next Saturday night at the Valley of Speed, Freihofer’s Night, with Coor’s presenting Biker Night. The Pro Stock Power Play Series will return along with the Budget Sportsman and all other Weekly Divisions.

Then on July 13th, it’s Rifenburg Construction presenting a $5,000 Big Block Modified ‘King of the Track’ Feature, plus a Romano Speed $1,000 to win Small Block Modified Feature plus all weekly divisions as well.

Binghamton Tops Trenton for 50th Win

BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Mets picked up their 50th win of the season as they defeated the Trenton Thunder, 5-4 in the series finale Sunday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium.

This is the first time in franchise’s 22-year history they have picked up their 50th victory before July 1st.

RHP Noah Syndergaard started the game for the B-Mets, but got off on the wrong foot. The second pitch of game was lifted over the right field wall by Ramon Flores, and the Thunder took an early 1-0 lead.

The deficit did not last long however, as the offense came through immediately against Major League rehab pitcher Michael Pineda. Two batters after Danny Muno led off with a walk, Cesar Puello blasted a deep home run into the railyard in left field to give Binghamton a 2-1 lead.

In the second, Pineda had a hard time finding the strike zone. After allowing a leadoff single to Richard Lucas, he walked Blake Forsythe and hit Joe Bonfe to load the bases. Two batters later, Pineda walked Muno again to bring home a run.

After the walk, Pineda found a groove and struck out the next four batters he faced. That stretch abruptly ended with two outs in the third when Richard Lucas hit a towering fly ball that drifted over the left field wall for a solo home run.

He was taken out of the game after three innings on the mound, as he allowed four runs, four hits, and walked four in his rehab start. Rigoberto Arrebato was the first reliever brought on for the Thunder, and he held Binghamton scoreless in the fourth and fifth inning.

Syndergaard had his way with Trenton after giving up the home run in the first inning. He held the Thunder scoreless through the next four innings, and left the game with a season-high nine strikeouts.

Jim Fuller came in the game in the top of the sixth, and immediately ran into trouble. He allowed a single and double before surrendering a three-run home run to Francisco Arcia which tied the game, 4-4.

The B-Mets rose to occasion however in the bottom of the inning. With runners at first and second base, Puello hit a hard ground ball that skipped off the glove of third baseman Reegie Corona. It bounced into foul territory and allowed Wilfredo Tovar to score from second base to give Binghamton a 5-4 lead.

That was all of the cushion Binghamton needed, as Ryan Fraser and Pedro Feliciano each threw a scoreless inning before handing the ball to closer Jeff Walters. Walters allowed two base-runners in the ninth, but struck out Andrew Clark to seal the series win for Binghamton.

Fuller (1-0) was awarded the victory on the mound, and Arrebato (0-1) was tagged with the loss. Walters recorded his league-leading 20th save of the season, and is the first B-Met to earn 20 saves in a season since Eddie Kunz did so in 2008 (27).

The victory also gives Binghamton the series victory, 3 games to 1. The B-Mets have now won 10 consecutive series, and finished the month of June with a 19-5 record.
