ALBANY, N.Y. -- The University at
Albany softball team will head to Fort Myers, Fla. this weekend to open up their
2013 season. The Great Danes play five games at the font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">FGCU/LaQuinta Inn at the Airport Spring
Break Invitational from Feb. 22-24 .The stretch includes three
match-ups against Big 10 opponents, two vs. Minnesota and one against Michigan
State. UAlbany will also play Villanova and the reigning Atlantic-Sun Champions,
host Florida Gulf Coast University, who upset No. 5-seeded Florida in last
year's NCAA Tournament.
UAlbany is coming off a 36-14 overall record and second place finish, 13-5, in the America East. After defeating both Maine and Stony Brook in elimination games, the Great Danes fell just short of crowning themselves conference champions for the fifth time in 2012. They were defeated by Boston U. in the America East Championship, 5-0. 2013 OUTLOOK UAlbany returns nine letterwinners and seven starters in 2013. Junior transfer, Charlise Castro, became the America East's first triple crown winner en route to 2012 conference player of the year honors. The first baseman batted .413 with 13 homers and 53 RBIs in her first season as a Great Dane. Vicky McFarland also returns after she earned conference rookie of the year. Returning to the mound, junior Brittany MacFawn logged 155 innings with 186 strikeouts and a 1.67 ERA last season. The right-handed hurler will look to repeat as a first-team pitcher. GREAT DANES ARE TOP DOGS IN PRESEASON POLL The University at Albany and Boston University were announced on Monday, Feb. 4, as co-favorites in the conference preseason coaches' poll. UAlbany and Boston U. each received three first-place votes and 32 points in a vote of the league's head coaches -- who were not allowed to vote for their own team. 19 SEASONS, 4 NCAA TRIPS, AND COUNTING FOR CANNATA Chris Cannata, a four-time America East Conference coach of the year and winningest head coach of the UAlbany softball program, enters her 19th season. During her tenure at UAlbany, the Great Danes have compiled a 533-281-1overall record, a 152-64-1 mark in America East play, a .656 winning percentage and have averaged over 30 wins per season. Cannata has also led the Great Danes to four NCAA Tournament appearances as well as three America East regular season championships and four tournament titles since the program joined Division I in 2000. Her club has never finished lower than fourth in the America East standings BREAKING INTO THE RECORD BOOK; CHASING MORE In her first season with UAlbany, Castro found her way into the Great Danes record book. Her .461 batting average, put her name second, (M. Cook-Carpenter .509, ‘95), for the single-season program record. She also recorded 13 homers and doubles -- both ranking second for a single-season. Castro will look to chase the career homerun record, where after one season, she sits sixth on the list. YOUR GREAT DANE NO. 1 STARTER In two seasons on the mound for UAlbany, MacFawn has put together an impressive resume. Logging 317.2 innings, the right-handed hurler has recorded a 29-14 record with a 2.02 ERA and 25 complete games. She ranks seventh on the Great Danes all-time list for strikeouts with 332 and leaves opponents with a minimal .216 batting average against her. MacFawn will get the opening day nod for UAlbany on Feb. 22 against Villanova in the FGCU Tournament. ROUNDING THE BASES Junior outfielder Taylor Franich tied the single-season record for triples in one season with six in 2012. She is expected to play a key role at the top of the Great Danes line-up this season. McFarland, stole 23 bases in her freshman season. She ranked third on the team in 2012 with a .382 on-base percentage. FGCU TOURNAMENT CENTRAL Tournament Home Page (View Schedule at Link). SYRACUSE LACROSSE TRIO NAMED TO 2013 TEWAARATON WATCH LIST
WASHINGTON – For the second year in a
row, three Orange men’s lacrosse players have been named to the Tewaaraton Award
Watch List. Seniors Brian Megill (Clark, N.J.), JoJo Marasco (Yorktown
Heights, N.Y.) and junior Derek Maltz (Ashburn, Va.) are potential
candidates for the award, which is presented to the college lacrosse player of
the year.
In all, 92 players were named to the watch list
that was released on Friday, Feb. 22 by the Tewaaraton Award Foundation. This
year’s winner will be recognized on May 30 at the Smithsonian Institute’s
National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.
All three of SU’s potential nominees were named
preseason All-Americans by Inside Lacrosse. Megill and Marasco were also named
to the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team, and Megill was tabbed the BIG EAST
co-Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
A first-team preseason All-American, Megill is
the Orange’s career leader with 80 caused turnovers. In 2012, he led the Orange
with 62 ground balls and set the SU single-season record with 37 caused
turnovers.
Marasco earned preseason honorable mention
All-America honors in December. He totaled a career-best eight points (three
goals, five assists) in SU’s season-opening loss to Albany. For his career,
Marasco has 97 points (47 goals, 50 assists). He registered 31 points last
season, including 19 assists, the most helpers for an Orange midfielder since
2000.
Like Marasco, Maltz was also a preseason
honorable mention All-America selection. He led the Orange with 28 goals in 2012
and scored once last weekend against Albany.
In late April the watch list will be narrowed
down to the 25 Tewaaraton Award nominees with the five finalists scheduled to be
announced in May.
The
Tewaaraton Award has been presented each year since 2001. Syracuse attackman
Mike Leveille won the award in 2008. He was the second Orange player to do so,
joining 2002 and 2004 Tewaaraton winner Mike Powell. Colgate’s Peter Baum took
home the trophy last year after leading the Raiders to the NCAA
quarterfinals
Friesen Unfreezes, Flies Forward to Super DIRTcar Series Win at Volusia
Wednesday Winner Danny Johnson Still Leads
in Event Points for DIRTcar Nationals presented by Summit Racing
Equipment
"I was able to roll in the middle, I was good on the bottom, good on the top," Friesen, of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, said of driving on the track at Volusia Speedway Park. "We had a really balanced car, which is key."
Friesen, a two-time VP Small Engine Fuels 200 Champion, was off to a slow start earlier in the week, breaking the top 20 in only one of three timed practice sessions Tuesday. His performance improved Wednesday, and has continued to improve Thursday. He hot lapped strongly at the sixth fastest time overall and placed second in his heat, carrying the momentum through the checkered flag.
"We worked really hard on the car; we had a couple problems in the practice session Tuesday and we worked them out yesterday in the feature," Friesen said. "We made some good adjustments to the car."
Polesitter Neal Williams took an early lead when Thursday's feature went green, but Friesen, who drew a spot in the third row, quickly advanced to second place. A yellow flag halted the pace in lap 5 as the 21k of Randy Chrysler collided with the 34 of Steve Hough collided. Immediately upon restarting the race, a pileup in turns 1 and 2 took several cars off the track. Brett Hearn, Billy Van Inwegen, Andy Bachetti and Dave Rauscher would not return to the track. Quebecois star Mario Clair, also involved, wheeled to the pits, where his crew was able to get the 22c in good enough shape to finish the race and nearly break the top 5.
On the second restart, Williams took the outside pole starting position, leaving the inside for runner-up Friesen, who flew forward at the green, taking the top spot before the first turn. Friesen soon built a substantial lead, soon separating himself from Williams by nearly half a lap.
The only challenge to Friesen came with a lap-22 caution that brought the field back together, runner-up Haers threatening to give Friesen a taste of his own medicine on the late-race double-file restart. Friesen prevailed through the next 8 laps of the 30-lap feature to take victory in the second Super DIRTcar Series race of the season.
Following Friesen across the finish line was Justin Haers, who, after just 11 laps, jumped from his eighth starting position to second.
"The car was good. I wish we had started a little better, but we started eighth and finished second. We can't complain," said Haers, of Phelps, N.Y. "If we can just build on it every night, then we should be in good shape."
Australian Modified star Pete Britten finished third, after a stunning heat race battle lead to his triumph over Rich Scagliotta for the win. Britten drew the fifth starting spot, making his way to third by lap 11.
"It took a little bit to get going," Britten said. "It's hard starting on the bottom because all the momentum is on the outside here, so I started fifth and went back to seventh. From then on, I just worked my way up when I could."
Three-time defending series champion Matt Sheppard finished fourth after starting ninth. Wednesday's victor Danny Johnson also spent the 30 laps darting past cars, making his way from 12th to fifth. Rounding out the top 10 are Rich Laubach in sixth, Neal Williams in seventh, Dan Vauter in eighth, H. J. Bunting III in ninth, and Jimmy Horton in tenth.
For the Super DIRTcar Series, UNOH DIRTcar Nationals presented by Summit Racing Equipment events like Thursday's will not accumulate points toward the series championship. However, points from feature and heat race finishes will determine the Big Block Modified division's event champion for UNOH DIRTcar Nationals presented by Summit Racing Equipment. After Thursday's race, Danny Johnson is in the lead for points, followed closely by Pete Britten in second and Justin Haers in third.
The Super DIRTcar Big Block Modified Series races two more consecutive nights at Volusia Speedway Park to close out the 12-day UNOH DIRTcar Nationals presented by Summit Racing Equipment. On both Friday, Feb. 22, and Saturday, Feb. 23, the Super DIRTcar Series shares the stage with the World of Outlaws Late Model Series. Gates open at 5 p.m. both nights with racing slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Danny Johnson Takes Super DIRTcar Series Opener
“The Doctor” Outlasts Stars Sheppard and
Hearn for Victory in First Big Block Modified Feature of UNOH DIRTcar Nationals
Presented by Summit Racing Equipment
BARBERVILLE, Fla. -
February 21, 2013 - Despite fierce challenges from Big Block Modified star Brett
Hearn and three-time defending Super DIRTcar Series Champion Matt Sheppard,
Danny Johnson wheeled the 27J to victory Wednesday, Feb. 20, for the firstSuper DIRTcar Big Block Modified Series feature
ofUNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing
Equipment at Volusia Speedway Park.
Although Johnson won the pole in qualifying rounds, Sheppard jumped to the lead off the initial green. He didn't stay there long, losing the top spot to Johnson after a restart in lap four. Johnson maintained his lead for the rest of the 30-lap feature, battling lapped traffic, a second caution and a last-minute battle with Hearn.
"We had some great racers next to us and a great racing surface out there," said Johnson, who hails from Rochester, N. Y. "I don't know how it was from the other side, but it sure was exciting from my side."
Johnson's victory Wednesday comes on the heels of a successful practice night Tuesday, Feb. 19. "The Doctor" Johnson made fast time in the first round, but fell to fourth in the second round.
"We tried making it faster yesterday, but actually made it slower in the second set of hot laps," Johnson said. In the mean time, his team seems to have found the right formula.
After the race's first caution, Johnson held an ever-expanding lead over runner-up Sheppard, until lapped traffic in lap 11 added an extra challenge. Sheppard gained ground on Johnson as the two navigated through lapped cars, and just when it seemed like he might be able to steal the lead, Sheppard's 9s suddenly spun and brought out caution in lap 26. An issue with his tear-offs causing low visibility for Sheppard, the champion driver was less able to visually gauge speeds and distances of the cars ahead.
"I got in there hot behind that lapped car. I thought I was going to tag him, and I hit the brakes too hard," said Sheppard, who then lost handling and spun 180 degrees. "I'm just glad nobody hit me when I spun out."
With no damage sustained, Sheppard returned to the race, starting at the rear of the lead lap cars with just four laps to go. He gained three spots to finish 11th.
"It could have been a lot worse," said Sheppard, pleased to be able to continue to run a good car for the remaining UNOT DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment features. "We were a little off - we had the car a little too tight tonight, but we were still in the hunt. It would have been a heck of a finish I think."
With Sheppard taken out of the running for the lead, Hearn, then in third, pulled up next to Johnson for the restart. Johnson, finding a sweet spot in the outside groove, took the outside, but Hearn powered hard at the green and the two were neck-and-neck. However, Johnson was able to claim a decisive lead within a lap, and kept it through lap 30 for the win.
"I was sitting up tall in my seat, there's no doubt about it," said Johnson, thankful his 27J was able to maneuver the Volusia turns at full throttle. "I pretty much went into the corner wide open, and when the car turned it didn't stumble, bump, it did what it had to do."
"We would have liked to have won tonight, but we can't be ashamed about second," said Hearn. "We qualified good like we needed to. It's important to do that all week long and get some good starting positions in the features. We'll just chew on it and try to get a little better."
The racing continues today, with the first of three consecutive nights of back-to-back World of Outlaws Late Models Series and Super DIRTcar Series feature events. Gates open at 5 p.m. and racing starts at 7:30 p.m. every night. For the latest news about UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment, follow @DIRTcarNats on Twitter.
