#23 UAlbany Field Hockey Wins First America East Game with 3-1 Victory Over Fairfield

McConville converted her fourth penalty stroke of the season to start the scoring, getting the Great Danes on the board in the 18th minute. Hillary Fitts tied the game at 1-all before the end of the first half, scoring an unassisted goal that deflected into the cage.
McConville put the Great Danes back on top in the second half, taking assists from Jessica Longstreth and Daphne Voormolen on a penalty corner, giving UAlbany a 2-1 lead at 47:34. Voormolen added an insurance goal for the Great Danes two minutes later, getting an unassisted shot past Fairfield goaltender Maddy Sposito to set the final margin.
UAlbany outshot the Stags, 15-11, and held an 8-4 advantage in penalty corners. Kristi Troch made four saves in the cage for the Great Danes, while Sposito stopped eight shots between the pipes for Fairfield (7-8, AE 0-3).
UAlbany will return to action on Sunday, hosting Lehigh in non-conference action at 2 p.m.

UAlbany Remains Lone Undefeated Team in America East Play With 3-1 Win Over New Hampshire
UAlbany fell to New Hampshire, 25-16, in the first set, but then posted scores of 25-20, 25-22, and 25-20 to earn the four-set victory.
The Wildcats used six kills apiece from Victoria Forrest and Morgan Thatcher to seal up the first set win. Jansan Falcusan handed out 14 assists, pacing New Hampshire to a .351 hitting percentage as a team. Gabby Whitworth recorded three kills on .750 hitting for the Great Danes, but UAlbany hit just .179 as a team, as New Hampshire got four total team blocks.
The Great Danes responded in the second set, as Pope came out swinging hard. The sophomore hit .636 in the set to lead UAlbany with seven kills, while Vandegrift recorded four kills and came up with six digs. Thatcher led New Hampshire with five kills, while Sam Henke and Jessie Schnepp recorded 11 and eight digs, respectively.
UAlbany came out firing once again in the third, as Pope finished eight of the Great Danes' 14 kills in the set. UAlbany got back on the blocks as well, getting four total, led by three assists each by Vandegrift and Alberte Bjornsson. Forrest led New Hampshire with five kills, but the Wildcats had just one total block, giving the Great Danes control at the net.
The duo of Pope and Vandegrift kept rolling for UAlbany in the final set, as the two each recorded six kills. Pope showed why she was named the America East Player of the Week, as she hit .556 in the set, thanks in part to strong setting by Whitworth, who handed out 17 assists. New Hampshire tried to find a rotation that would pull them back into the match, using several different players, including Abigail Brinkman, who led the Wildcats with three kills. However, strong defensive play by the Great Danes held out, and UAlbany sealed up the victory.
Pope finished with a .467 hitting percentage in the match to lead all players. Whitworth, the reigning Setter of the Week in the conference, handed out 47 assists and also recorded 14 kills and nine digs. Viktoriia Stroilo recorded 29 digs, while Kathleen Horvath also played well in the back row, coming up with 12 digs.
UAlbany will return to action on Sunday, visiting Providence in America East Conference action, starting at 2 p.m.
LeBrun Wins Pro Stock Series Finale at Brockville
"I feel very happy," the French-speaking LeBrun said through a translator. "The car was running good, I thank my pit crew and my family for everything, and Brockville for having this."
But as far as the series was concerned, LeBrun's win was no match for Ladouceur's ample point lead and, finishing second, Ladouceur was able to stay ahead of the pack. Rob Yetman, who trailed Ladouceur by 35 points, finished seventh, and Jocelyn Roy, 97 points behind the leader, finished ninth.
Ladouceur took last year's championship as well, coming off NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week in Syracuse with a lead in points lead and keeping it when the Brockville's Pro Stock finale rained out.
"This year we went out and we ran it, and we won it, and it feels good to win it that way," said Ladouceur, who has earned a total of six too-five finishes and two series wins, at Cornwall Motor Speedway and Mohawk International Raceway, throughout the season.
Going into Friday's race, Ladouceur faced Brockville's "Beast of the East" with a degree of caution, knowing that he could finish as far back as eighth and still keep the point lead, even should point runner-up Yetman win. His ninth starting spot was not ideal if he hoped to win the race, but with Yetman starting in 17th, endurance became priority over speed.
"I wasn't willing to take too many chances. I was going at it conservatively - cautiously aggressive," Ladouceur said.
A lap 24 pile-up in was especially threatening, happening as it did between the third- and fourth-place cars, driven by Pascal Romansky and Ryan Stabler respectively, with Ladouceur just behind in sixth. The accident did some damage to the 92's fender and a tire, but Ladouceur stayed in the game and made it to third on the restart.
"Once I got through all that, things cleared up and we were able to race a little bit more," Ladouceur said.
He threw caution to the wind in the second 25 laps, challenging for George Renaud for second and winning out in lap 30. Ladouceur proceeded to challenge LeBrun for the lead, but LeBrun held steady for the remaining 20 laps.
Overall, Ladouceur is pleased with a second-place finish to cap off his season, his last as a Pro Stock regular, as he makes plans to compete in the Sportsman division next season. Ladouceur makes his Sportsman debut Sunday at Brockville Ontario Speedway for the last day of the Thousand Islands RV Fall Nationals.
Rounding out the top five in Friday's DIRTcar Pro Stock Series finale were George Renaud in third, Dave Seguin in fourth, and Richard Bertrand in fifth. The Thousand Islands RV Fall Nationals at Brockville Ontario Speedway continues Saturday with the DIRTcar 358-Modified Series finale and Sunday with both the DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Series finale and round 14 of the Super DIRTcar Series.

Women's Soccer Loses Heartbreaker To New Hampshire, 1-0
With the match knotted at zero in the first half, UAlbany (5-9-1, 2-3 America East) seemed like the team to break open the tie. The Great Danes took 11 shots in the second half, three of which were on net. Two of UAlbany's shots on net came in the waning moments of the match, both taken by senior forward Shayla Bergeron.
In the 88th minute, Bergeron cut through two defenders and send a shot that grazed the outside of the left post. Then with 41 seconds remaining, Bergeron again had a chance to end the game, but the Wildcats goalkeeper Erin Correa made her seventh save of the night.
New Hampshire (5-8-2, 3-1-1 America East) had one last opportunity to take matters into its own hands. With the clock ticking down, midfielder Gabrielle Sloan sent a pass from about midfield towards the box. As UAlbany goalkeeper Alana Brennan charged for the ball, forward Meghan Ledwith took one touch and sent a strike to win the game with 12 seconds left on the clock.
In the first half, UAlbany held a 7-3 shot advantage. Senior midfielder Maggie DeVerna looked to find the match's first goal of the game, taking three shots towards the end of the half. Correa denied two of DeVerna’s shots and a New Hampshire defender blocked the other.
Great Dane goalkeeper Brennan recorded two saves on three chances in the loss. Wildcat goalkeeper Correa tallied seven saves on her way to a clean sheet.
UAlbany looks to bounce back against Vermont on Sunday, Oct. 14 at the Turf at College Park. Kickoff set for 2 p.m.
