Women's Soccer Loses Heartbreaker To New Hampshire, 1-0

ALBANY, N.Y. - New Hampshire forward Meghan Ledwith scored the game-winning goal with 12 seconds remaining to defeat UAlbany, 1-0, on Thursday, October 11 at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Great Danes out shot the Wildcats by a staggering 18-5 mark and held the advantage in corner kicks, 5-3 for the match.

With the match knotted at zero in the first half, UAlbany (5-9-1, 2-3 America East) seemed like the team to break open the tie. The Great Danes took 11 shots in the second half, three of which were on net. Two of UAlbany's shots on net came in the waning moments of the match, both taken by senior forward Shayla Bergeron.

In the 88th minute, Bergeron cut through two defenders and send a shot that grazed the outside of the left post. Then with 41 seconds remaining, Bergeron again had a chance to end the game, but the Wildcats goalkeeper Erin Correa made her seventh save of the night.

New Hampshire (5-8-2, 3-1-1 America East) had one last opportunity to take matters into its own hands. With the clock ticking down, midfielder Gabrielle Sloan sent a pass from about midfield towards the box. As UAlbany goalkeeper Alana Brennan charged for the ball, forward Meghan Ledwith took one touch and sent a strike to win the game with 12 seconds left on the clock.

In the first half, UAlbany held a 7-3 shot advantage. Senior midfielder Maggie DeVerna looked to find the match's first goal of the game, taking three shots towards the end of the half. Correa denied two of DeVerna’s shots and a New Hampshire defender blocked the other.

Great Dane goalkeeper Brennan recorded two saves on three chances in the loss. Wildcat goalkeeper Correa tallied seven saves on her way to a clean sheet.

UAlbany looks to bounce back against Vermont on Sunday, Oct. 14 at the Turf at College Park. Kickoff set for 2 p.m.
