SU MEN’S SOCCER’S FIRST ACC SCHEDULE FEATURES ELITE COMPETITION

Restore Vitality with Life LiftSYRACUSE, N.Y. – Matches against seven teams that qualified for last year’s NCAA Tournament, including four of the last six national champions, highlight the Syracuse men’s soccer team’s 2013 schedule, released by Orange head coach Ian McIntyre on Tuesday, June 4. The Orange will play 18 regular-season games, including 11 conference matches, in its first year as a member of the ACC.

The schedule features 11 home dates and seven road matches. Included in the home schedule are visits by perennial national powers Notre Dame (Sept. 13) and Connecticut (Sept. 17), as well as 2009 NCAA champion Virginia (Sept. 28) and 2012 national semifinalist Maryland (Oct. 26).

“I am very excited for the Syracuse soccer community,” McIntyre said. “Our 2013 home schedule brings a high level of college soccer to Syracuse and I’m excited that our fans will have the opportunity to watch us compete against such storied programs at the SU Soccer Stadium.”

Following exhibitions against Fordham (Aug. 18) and 2012 NCAA runner-up Georgetown (Aug. 24), Syracuse begins the 2013 campaign at Colgate on Aug. 30. The team’s home opener is three days later versus Hartwick (Sept. 2).

The Orange’s first ACC contest is scheduled for Sept. 6 at Virginia Tech. The matchup with the Hokies precedes a three-game homestand versus Manhattan (Sept. 9), Notre Dame and Connecticut.

Syracuse returns to the road for an important league match on Sept. 20 at Duke.

Upon its return from Durham, Syracuse will host four games over the next two weeks as the Orange welcomes Massachusetts (Sept. 25), Virginia, Binghamton (Oct. 1) and NC State (Oct. 4) to The Salt City.

The Orange heads back out on the road briefly for a date with Boston College (Oct. 8) before returning home to host fellow ACC newcomer Pittsburgh on Oct. 12.

Road dates at North Carolina (Oct. 18) and Albany (Oct. 22) are next, followed by home ACC games against Maryland and Clemson (Nov. 1).

The Orange concludes the regular season at Wake Forest on Nov. 8.

The quarterfinal round of the 2013 ACC Men’s Soccer Championship will take place on Nov. 12 at campus sites. The ACC semifinals and championship match are slated for Nov. 15-17 at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, Md.

“As a student-athlete you want to test yourself against the very best,” McIntyre said. “This schedule affords us the opportunity to compete against elite programs that have succeeded at the highest collegiate level. We look forward to embracing the challenges ahead as we transition into the ACC.”

Bowen, Scannapieco To Contend At NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Try 6 Flavors of Life Lift with VPX Sports

ALBANY, N.Y. -- University at Albany track and field standouts Alexander Bowen and Alfonso Scannapieco will compete for national titles this week at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 5-8.

Bowen, a sophomore from Beacon, N.Y., will look to top his program and conference-record mark of 7’ 3.25” in the high jump, which ranks 10th among the championship field of athletes. He tied for first at the 2013 NCAA Division I Track and Field East Preliminary Round in Greensboro, N.C. Bowen punched his ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, clearing every one of his jumps, ending with 7’ 1.5” – the height that determined the 12 NCAA Qualifiers. Bowen is a four-time America East high jump title-winner, as well as the 2013 IC4A champion. Last spring, Bowen became the University at Albany’s first USA Junior National Champion. Bowen will compete Friday, June 7th at 3:20 p.m.

Scannapieco, a junior pole vaulter from Mohegan Lake, N.Y., cleared 17’ 2.75” at the NCAA East Preliminary Round, tying for eighth-place among the field of 48. Scannpieco has the opportunity to be highly competitive in the championship field, having matched UAlbany’s program record with a 17’ 6.5” clearance at the IC4A Championship. Scannapieco will compete Wednesday, June 5th at 4:00 p.m. at Historic Hayward Field.

The pair will mark UAlbany’s 14th and 15th individuals to compete in the NCAA Track & Field Championships since the University went Division I in 1999 and the program’s firsts since hurdler Allie Beauvais and pole vaulter Luke Schoen participated in 2011.

In his 28-year tenure, Director of Track and Field Roberto Vives has coached 14 individual NCAA champions, 141 All-America athletes, and five NCAA Division I All-Americans. Bowen and Scannapieco will look to add to those totals this week.

Top 5 Reasons to Attend Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen

To finish the month of June, Watkins Glen International will host its first pro race weekend of the season - the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen.
Buy the Jimmie Johnson Monster's University Diecast Car at the NASCAR Online SuperstoreAlthough sports cars are at the very heart of why international pro racing exists in Schuyler County, the six-hour endurance classic has only been run 31 times. After the track came out of bankruptcy, the race wasn't revived until 1996 and has been a staple on the schedule for all but one year since then.
It's become a fan favorite because of the ease of getting around, the use of the "boot" and the accessibility. Here are five worthwhile reasons to attend this year's race:

ValueFor starters, this weekend has more bang for the buck than any other race at The Glen, or really anywhere I can think of.
Weekend admission starts at $40, with children 19 and younger admitted for free. That's three days to take in not only Grand-Am's Rolex Series, but the Continental Tire Series for production-based cars, the Porsche GT3 Challenge Series and the F2000 open-wheel feeder series. Overall, there will be six races over the course of the weekend with literally dozens of different cars, engine and chassis combos.
That $40 also lets you wander pretty much every where except the team haulers, which leads us to ...
AccessibilityWant to see the cars up close? Not a problem. Want a signature for your souvenir program? Every driver is made available during autograph sessions.
In addition to that, any grandstand on the grounds is open, as are the viewing areas that line the 3.4-mile road course. During the six-hour race, you can literally walk the track and take in the racing from every angle imaginable - except the safety stations, of course. There's even a hot dog eating contest and a concert on Saturday night.
No other weekend at The Glen offers that kind of diversity, which leads us to ...

Cars, lots of themFrom the Daytona Prototypes to the Ferrari GTs, there will be nearly 200 different race cars competing beginning Friday morning through Sunday evening.
It's a gearhead's Nirvana.
Practically all the major auto manufacturers are represented, and the cars are driven by the best sports car racers in the world. The Continental Tire Series alone boasts fields in the 70s, featuring Mustangs, Camaros, Porsches, BMWs, Mazdas and Hondas, while the Rolex Series ranges from the engine-chassis combinations in the top class to the production models in GT.
The F2000 Series, making its return to The Glen, features up-and-coming talent with eyes towards IndyCar.

A lot of great drivers have gone through sports cars and open-wheel training series, giving fans a first look at future Hall of Famers, which leads us to ...

HistoryNot only will this year's Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen be the last sanctioned by Grand-Am, but it's the 32nd edition of a race that's become one of the crown jewels in American endurance racing.
Mario Andretti, Jacky Ickx, Derek Bell, Brian Redman, Max Papis, Butch Leitzinger, Scott Goodyear and Scott Pruett have all put their names in the record books at The Glen. It's become one leg of the "Triple Crown" in the Rolex Series, along with the 24 Hours of Daytona and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Even the cars have become iconic - from the Porsche 917 to the Ferrari 333SP.

The BootThe Glen is in use from April through October, welcoming hundreds of clubs and thousands of drivers and cars that all use Turns 6-9 - know as "The Boot."
This extra mile of track was added to accommodate to the increasing speeds of the Formula One cars. It turned a really fast track into a much more technical one. However, since the stock cars don't use that portion of the 3.4-course, Grand-Am is the only pro series to tackle the western end. Not only does it make things trickier for drivers, but it expands the viewing area for fans.
Some of the most challenging, and interesting, corners are found in The Boot, and you can always see fans line the fence.

George Suprick Update

Revell 1:24 Steve Kinser Bass Pros Shops Sprint Car

Rich Vleck, ROCHESTER, NY, (June 2, 2013)- Saturday Night, on the way home from his fourth place finish in the Patriot Sprint Tour A-Main, George Suprick suffered a heart attack and was found to have multiple blood clots and is being treated at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Suprick, 54, of Clarks Summit, PA, was driving the Ide Motorsports Hauler back along Route 80 near Clarion, PA when he began to notice chest pains. He managed to get the transporter pulled over and his teammate Clint Ide called 911. Thankfully, paramedics and an ambulance was less than a mile away at the time and were able to care for Suprick quickly. George was flown by helicopter to Pittsburgh where he is currently in intensive care unit in stable condition. George is in his typical spry spirit and was able to contact his team owner Mark Ide to help ease his anxiety.

More information will be passed along as it becomes available on www.PatriotSprintTour.com.

Danny Holtgraver Darts from Dead Last to Win Patriot Sprint Tour Event at Mercer

World Of Outlaws Sprint Cars

Rich Vleck, MERCER, PA, (June 1, 2013)- Sometimes overall track experience is just more critical than time on the track that night.

Danny Holtgraver, of Pittsburgh , PA , used his hundreds of laps around Mercer Raceway Park ’s unique 3/8-mile oval over his career to his advantage on Saturday Night as he drove from his 20th place starting position to a thrilling win in the first Patriot Sprint Tour feature at “The Great Race Place” since 2005.

Holtgraver’s participation in the PST event was in question even after the heat race action as his team’s hauler was broken down just outside of town and unable to get to the track. Once the No. 45 was in the pits, he got two quick laps during the dash, which appeared to be all the time the youngster needed.

“We had an awesome car for getting just two hot laps,” noted Holtgraver, 23, in Victory Lane . “We just made some good moves and it was fun out there.”

Scott Kreutter and Justin Barger, the defending PST America and Canada Champions, respectively, started on the front row, with Kreutter jumping out to the early advantage. Barger appeared poised to pounce on the lead on a lap six restart, but Kreutter stayed in front and eventually Jared Zimbardi would take over the runner-up position. Zimbardi was positioning himself well, but while that was happening, Holtgraver was on a mad-dash to the front.

At the time of the first caution flag on lap five, Holtgraver’s No. 45 was already inside the top 10. Getting inside the top five was a taller task, but he was still able to accomplish it via some extra restarts. Holtgraver was up to third by lap nine and already in position.

Despite cracking in to the top three before halfway, Kreutter and Zimbardi were not ready to roll over. The two most recent winners on tour, as well as the two most recent PST America Champions battled it out for the lead over the second half of the race, but with five laps remaining, Zimbardi was going for the lead on two occasions when the caution flew. On his third bid, “The Juice” drifted high coming off of turn two, opening up the door for Holtgraver to snatch second.

Kreutter still had a solid car, but as he approached lap traffic coming to three laps to go, Holtgraver saw his opportunity and dove to the inside of the No. 52 entering turn three and had just enough momentum to lead coming back to complete lap 22. Over the final three circuits, he would pad his lead and hang on to become the 52nd different winner of a PST Points-paying race.

Holtgraver’s win makes it five different winners in the five PST America events this season. Add to it Steve Poirier’s victory in the PST Canada race at Merrittville, and no driver has won multiple PST events thus far in 2013.

Kreutter would surely would have liked to win his fourth feature in his last five starts in Pennsylvania , but his second place showing not only preserved his point lead, but helped him expand on it. Zimbardi’s third place effort enabled him to move into second in the standings as the season nears its halfway point.

George Suprick won the Original Pizza Logs Four Laps of Fame Dash for the second time this season and parlayed that performance into a fourth place finish. Unfortunately, as great as his evening was, his night took a frightening turn as he suffered a heart attack on the ride home and was flown to University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Justin Barger faded back to fifth with a tight-handling race car, placing just ahead of Tommy Wickham, who won his heat and finished sixth for the third straight race. Steve Collins also won his heat and would place in seventh at one of his favorite tracks.

Brad Knab would finish eighth, just ahead of Adam Anderson, who charged up from ninth to move in front of Geoff Quackenbush, who rounded out the top 10.

A total of 20 Patriot Sprints were in competition once Holtgraver’s No. 45 finally made it into the pits. Jason Scoville was a surprise heat race winner but spun during the feature drawing on of the four cautions of the event.

Andy Bachetti Takes Two in a Row to the Bank

Dirt Track Chassis and SuspensionHP1511: Advanced Setup and Design Technology for Dirt Track Racing

West Lebanon, NY: The hot, sultry weather brought out the hot racing action at the legendary High Banks at Lebanon Valley Speedway. On KeyBank and Doherty Brothers Construction night, Andy Bachetti hammered home a victory in Big Block Modifieds. While Steve Meilleur got his first win the new Small Block class; veteran Alan Houghtaling captured and extra cool $1,000 for his win in Budget Sportsman.

The heat of the night brought everyone out to pack the stands at the Valley of Speed. And the marquee feature was hitting the ½ dirt oval right on time. 30 laps were on the ‘104.9 The Cat’ Lap Counter, and Paul Gilardi and Denny Soltis were at the point, bringing the field to green.

But before the first lap was on the board, a jingle in turn 3 involving Soltis and several other cars brought out the caution and reset the field back to the original start. Involved in the melee was Gilardi, Brett Hearn, Donnie Corellis, Kenny Tremont Jr, Mike King, Matt Pupello and Wayne Jelley. All were able to continue, some from the rear of the field.

Back up front, the green flew again, but this time it was Rob Pitcher taking control of the field. Caution flew again on lap 1, this time for another multicar incident. The field was reset, but just before the green another jingle shuffled the field back in the pack. On the green everything sorted out except for Hearn, who suffered a flat right rear causing another multi-car melee on the backstretch involving John Ruchel, Jelley, Gilardi and Pupello.

Pitcher was out front again at the green, but the man on the move, once the racing got under way, was Andy Bachetti. The #34B charged its way into 2nd by lap 5, then into the lead by lap 11. The caution flew a few more times, slowing only the inevitable, as Bachetti goes back to back for the win.

Follow Bachetti across the line was Pitcher, Kyle Sheldon, Kolby Schroder and Hearn to round out the top 5.

The new Small Block Modified class is really starting to take a hold and the competition is really hot and heavy. At the start, Sean Mandell took control of the 24 lap affair, but Steve Meilleur was a man on a mission, and took control of the top spot by lap 8, and the win shortly thereafter.

A couple of cautions slowed the field briefly, by Meilleur had ‘em covered, taking his first win in the new class. Brian Sandstedt finished 2nd, followed by Jason Herrington, Wayne Jelley and Steve Hough.

There was plenty of racing action in the growing Budget Sportsman 20 lap $1,000 to win affair. 32 cars took to the high banks with Milo Campbell and Greg Catlin out in front of the field at the green.

The yellow flag flew only once on lap 3, then it was right back to green. But by lap 4, Alan Houghtaling charged out into the lead, and he checked out on the field. Plenty of racing back in the field, but they all were clearly racing for 2nd place.

At the checkers, Houghtaling took the checkers, and an extra $1,000 for his troubles. Whitey Slavin crossed the line 2nd followed by Tommy Johnson, Matt Pappa and Rob Maxon.

And if that weren’t enough racing action, the full fendered classes took to the Valley of Speed as well. In the Pro Stock 20 Lap feature, Tom Harkins was out front early, but caution flew on lap 2 for a serious incident on the backstretch involving several cars, including Danny Sanchez, Paul LaRochelle, Jay Corbin and others.

LaRochelle and Corbin were both attended to by the EMS team for their injuries, and were both done for the night. Everyone else involved did continue. After a brief red flag to clean up the track, Green was back out again with Harkins still in command.

Chuck Towslee powered his way into the lead on lap 7, but by lap 8, Jason Casey powered by him. Towslee took it back after a restart on lap 9, but Casey had the faster car on long run, and took it back for good by lap 11.

At the checkers, it was Casey, Towslee, Sanchez, Victory Hopkins, and Frank Twing to round out the top 5 finishers.

In the earlier events, Purestock #1 was captured by Larry Perez, Purestock was won by Gary O’Brian, and Purestock #3 was won by Ed Hatch.

Next Saturday Night, Whiteman Osterman and Hanna LLP present the 0st Annual $3,000 to Win ‘J.C. Flach Modified Memorial’, along with 4 Cylinders and all other weekly divisions. Then on June 15th it’s the Genderon’s Truck Center and Sysco Foods presenting the ESS Super Sprints, and the DMC Racing Products 8th Annual ‘Bubba Tanner 23 Lap Classic’ for the Pro Stocks!

Montero, B-Mets Tame Fisher Cats, 6-0

MLB New York Mets Authentic On Field Road 59FIFTY Cap, Black/Royal Blue Bill, 7 1/2

MANCHESTER, NH – The Binghamton Mets collected a season-high 15 hits and Rafael Montero fired seven shutout innings in a 6-0 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Saturday night at Northeast Delta Stadium. The victory, their third shutout of the season, pushes the B-Mets into sole possession of first place in the Eastern Division.

Facing New Hampshire starter Ryan Tepera for the third time this season, the B-Mets jumped on the righty early. Danny Muno broke a slump of 24 straight hitless at-bats with a leadoff single in the second. Cory Vaugh brought him home quickly by lacing an RBI double to right, giving Binghamton a 1-0 lead.

Muno contributed to the offense again in the second. With Wilfredo Tovar aboard on a throwing error by third baseman Kevin Ahrens, Muno blistered a 2-0 pitch over the right-center field wall. His second homer of the season kicked Binghamton’s advantage to three runs.

The B-Mets used some hard-nosed play to produce their fourth run in the third inning. With one out and two runners on, Alonzo Harris rolled a ground ball back to the mound. Tepera fired to second for one out, but Joe Bonfe broke up the potential twin-killing with a clean take-out slide. The slide forced shortstop Kevin Nolan to skip his throw to first, allowing Blake Forsythe to score.

Tepera was finally given the hook after issuing a two-out walk in the fifth. Matt Wright entered and immediately surrendered an RBI single to Muno, his third hit of the game.

The run support was more than enough for Montero (6-3), who put together his second straight scoreless performance. The righty effortlessly shut down the Fisher Cats offense over seven shutout frames. He surrendered just five singles, walked one batter and struck out four in his longest outing as a Binghamton Met.

The Fisher Cats put two aboard and threatened early in the first, but Montero induced Kevin Nolan to fly out to silence the rally. The fly out started a stretch of ten straight batters put down by the right-hander. Montero allowed only four baserunners in each of his final three innings, all of them blank frames.

Chase Huchingson took over in the eighth and posted two scoreless innings to cap Binghamton’s third shutout win of the season.

Tepera (5-4) went 4-2/3 innings in the loss and allowed five runs (four earned) on ten hits, the most he has surrendered as a Fisher Cat. Wright held the fort for 2-1/3 innings of relief. Tommy Hottovy closed the Fisher Cats’ pitching tab and allowed a solo homer to Vaughn in the eighth inning.

The B-Mets (32-24) complete their three-game series against the Fisher Cats (28-29) Sunday afternoon at 1:35 PM. RHP Jacob deGrom takes the ball for Binghamton versus LHP Sean Nolin. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 1:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

POSTGAME NOTES: Muno’s three-hit game was his third of the season and first since May 13…Montero has not allowed a run with the B-Mets in his last 16-2/3 innings…the B-Mets lead the Eastern League with 32 victories
