Bowen, Scannapieco To Contend At NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

ALBANY, N.Y. -- University at Albany track and field standouts Alexander Bowen and Alfonso Scannapieco will compete for national titles this week at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 5-8.

Bowen, a sophomore from Beacon, N.Y., will look to top his program and conference-record mark of 7’ 3.25” in the high jump, which ranks 10th among the championship field of athletes. He tied for first at the 2013 NCAA Division I Track and Field East Preliminary Round in Greensboro, N.C. Bowen punched his ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, clearing every one of his jumps, ending with 7’ 1.5” – the height that determined the 12 NCAA Qualifiers. Bowen is a four-time America East high jump title-winner, as well as the 2013 IC4A champion. Last spring, Bowen became the University at Albany’s first USA Junior National Champion. Bowen will compete Friday, June 7th at 3:20 p.m.

Scannapieco, a junior pole vaulter from Mohegan Lake, N.Y., cleared 17’ 2.75” at the NCAA East Preliminary Round, tying for eighth-place among the field of 48. Scannpieco has the opportunity to be highly competitive in the championship field, having matched UAlbany’s program record with a 17’ 6.5” clearance at the IC4A Championship. Scannapieco will compete Wednesday, June 5th at 4:00 p.m. at Historic Hayward Field.

The pair will mark UAlbany’s 14th and 15th individuals to compete in the NCAA Track & Field Championships since the University went Division I in 1999 and the program’s firsts since hurdler Allie Beauvais and pole vaulter Luke Schoen participated in 2011.

In his 28-year tenure, Director of Track and Field Roberto Vives has coached 14 individual NCAA champions, 141 All-America athletes, and five NCAA Division I All-Americans. Bowen and Scannapieco will look to add to those totals this week.
