B-Mets Take Division Lead with 8-5 Win
BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Mets used a
four-run seventh inning to break a 4-4 tie, as they topped the Altoona Curve,
8-5 Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium.
The win is the
fourth-straight victory for the B-Mets, as they moved into sole possession of
first place in the Eastern Division.
With two-on and one out in the seventh,
Josh Rodriguez gave Binghamton a 5-4 lead with an RBI single into
right-centerfield. Cesar Puello walked to load the bases, and Allan Dykstra then
hit a run-scoring single to right field. Altoona reliever Luis Sanz struggled to
find the strike zone, and walked Cory Vaughn to force another run across. The
final run of the frame came home on a Darrell Ceciliani sacrifice fly.
Erik Goeddel started on the
mound for Binghamton, but fell behind early. After walking Adalberto Santos to
start the game, Andrew Lambo singled him in with two outs in the first to give
the Curve a 1-0 lead.
Santos hit a two-run single
to left field in the second to put Binghamton in a 3-0 hole. The righty was
locked in for the rest of his outing however; he retired the final 10 hitters he
faced and allowed three hits in the start.
The offense came back from
the early deficit as well. Blake Forsythe hit a solo home run in the second
inning to put Binghamton on the board. Puello and Dykstra led off the fourth
inning with back-to-back doubles to cut the Altoona lead to 3-2.
Binghamton took their first
lead of the game in the bottom half of the sixth inning. With two-on and
two-outs Darrell Ceciliani knocked a two-run double down the left field line to
give the B-Mets a 4-3 lead.
Shawn Teufel relieved
Goeddel in the top of the seventh inning, and struggled to find the strike zone.
The lefty walked the only three batters he faced, before turning things over to
Adam Kolarek. Mel Rojas Jr. hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game 4-4 against
Kolarek, but he retired the next two batters to escape the big
inning.
After Binghamton broke the
tie with four runs in the seventh, Kolarek returned for the eighth inning. He
gave up a leadoff triple, followed by an RBI single to cut the lead to 8-5. When
he walked Charlie Cutler to put runners at first and second base with one out,
Jack Leathersich was brought into the game for a five-out save
opportunity.
Leathersich rose to the
occasion; he struck out five of the six batters he faced for his third save of
the season. Kolarek got the win relief, and Sanz was tagged with the loss after
allowing four runs in the seventh.
The B-Mets (30-22) will
look to win their fifth consecutive game on Wednesday night against the Curve
(20-31). LHP Mark Cohoon takes the hill for Binghamton against RHP Jameson
Taillon. First pitch is at 6:35 PM with the Horizons Federal Credit Union
Pregame Show starting at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

Patriot Sprint Tour Wanders West for Rare Appearances at Raceway 7 and Mercer
Rich Vleck,
ROCHESTER, NY, (May 28, 2013)- As the 2013 Patriot Sprint Tour America
Championship begins to take some structure, two races lie ahead that are sure to
be major variables with the lack of track experience for most
teams.
This Friday Night, the Patriot Sprint Tour heads to
Raceway 7 in Conneaut , OH for the first time ever. Raceway 7 will be the
33rd track to host at Patriot Sprint Tour point race in series
history, only the second facility in the Buckeye State . The 7/16-mile oval is
the only track the PST will visit for the first time in 2013. Not only are the
Patriots at Raceway 7 for the first time, it is the first 360 sprint race at the
Northeast Ohio facility.
On Saturday Night, the series returns to the beautiful
Mercer Raceway Park . Last September, the 3/8-mile oval attempted to host its
first PST event since 2005, but as the A-Main was pushing on to the racetrack,
rain moved over the facility and continued building in intensity, forcing the
cancellation of the A-Main.
This weekend there is a good chance that one driver will
win their second PST event of the season. The top four in the current PST
America standings all have one win this season, including Bryan Howland, who
currently holds a 16-point advantage in the PST America standings over Scott
Kreutter, who is fresh off his third straight win at Eriez on Sunday. Justin
Barger is third in points, a single marker ahead of Jared Zimbardi, who won
Saturday at Bradford Speedway.
Among the drivers looking for their first PST win of
2013 is George Suprick won his heat race at Mercer last season. Another driver
with a solid opportunity is Dave Ely, who won the “Great Race” Challenge there
in 2004. Ely was knocking on the door of Victory Lane in both races last
weekend. Tommy Wickham was sixth in both events and should be a factor this
weekend. Canadians Jamie Collard and Mitch Brown should also be making their
presence known.
PST mainstays Geoff Quackenbush, Clint Ide, Brad Knab,
Derek Jonathan, Bruce DeWick, Steve Collins, Dave Wickham, Brandan Warner,
Steven Hutchinson Jr., Tyler Graves, Scott Just and Dave Just are also expected
for the journey out west.
Among the locals that have had these events circled are
Adam Anderson of Meadville , PA , Dennis Wagner of New Castle , PA , Gary
Edwards of Columbiana , OH , Craig and Dalton Daniels. There are many other
competitors that may join in on the fun and any interested are urged to contact
series director Mike Emhof at 585-370-6495 for more
information.
Raceway 7 is located at 4094 Center Rd in Monroe Center
, OH and will swing their gates open at 5:00 P.M., with racing beginning at 7:30
P.M. Mercer’s gates will open at 4:00 on Saturday, with racing starting at 7:00
P.M. The track is located at 555 Fairground Rd , Mercer , PA , 16137 . For

BU Baseball draws #9 NC State
VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton baseball learned its draw in the NCAA Regional Monday afternoon and the America East champion Bearcats will be headed to Raleigh, N.C. and will face ninth-ranked NC State (44-14) in the opening game Friday night. The other two teams at the double-elimination regional are 21st-ranked Ole Miss (37-22) and Colonial Athletic Association member William & Mary (37-22).
“We knew whoever we would face would be a good challenge,” 21st-year head coach Tim Sinicki said. “NC State has had a good program for years and they play in one of the premier conferences in the country. They are a host school out of the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) ... that’s really all you need to know. But we had a great week of baseball and feel good about who we are. This team never gives up and feels it can hang with anyone. The way we battled through the conditions and won the conference tournament ... that can have momentum as we move forward. We’re excited and ready for the challenge.”

The Bearcats (30-23) captured the program’s second conference title in the last five years with a 4-0 win over top-seeded Maine in Sunday’s deciding game of the America East championship. Binghamton went 3-1 at the tournament, which began in Lowell, Mass. and ended in Kingston, R.I.
With Sunday’s win, BU reached the 30-win plateau for the third time in the last seven years.

DUKE TOPS SYRACUSE TO WIN 2013 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Sophomore attackman
Kevin Rice (Skaneateles, N.Y.) and redshirt freshman Dylan Donahue
(Camillus, N.Y.) paced the Orange with four points each. Rice finished with
one goal and three assists. Donahue scored three times and dished out one
assist. Senior JoJo Marasco (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) contributed two
goals and one assist for the Orange in his final college game.
Donahue and Marasco
represented Syracuse on the all-tournament team along with defenseman Sean
Young (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) and goalie Dominic Lamolinara (Arnold,
Md.).
It was Rice who
sparked the Orange early against the Blue Devils as all of his points came in a
5-0 Syracuse run to start the game. Rice assisted on junior Billy Ward’s
(Baldwinsville, N.Y.) transition goal at the 10:26 mark of the first quarter
to open the scoring. Rice found the cage himself less than a minute later, and
connected with senior Luke Cometti (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Donahue for goals
during the run.
Duke’s Jordan Wolf
briefly halted the Orange momentum when he finished a Walsh pass with 12:54 to
play in the first half, but junior Scott Loy (Toledo, Ohio) came right
back for Syracuse, scoring off a feed from Donahue make it 6-1
Orange.
With Syracuse threatening to break the game
open, the Blue Devils responded with four consecutive goals, including an
unassisted score by Wolf with 1:51 left in the half, to trim the Orange margin
to 6-5 at the break.
In the third quarter,
David Lawson notched Duke’s fifth in a row to tie the game, 6-6, with 12:58
remaining in the period.
The Orange scoring
drought eventually stretched to 22 minutes and 19 seconds before Donahue
finished a Ryan Barber (Camillus, N.Y.) pass at the 4:28 mark of the
third quarter to give Syracuse a 7-6 advantage.
After Donahue’s goal,
Duke ripped off the next seven goals to go up 13-7 with 10:47 to go. Josh Dionne
and Josh Offit keyed the Blue Devil surge with two goals apiece in the
run.
Back-to-back goals by
Marasco closed the gap to four, 13-9, with 7:36 to play, but Duke tallied three
of the game’s last four goals to hold off the Orange and win its second national
championship.
Wolf led the Blue
Devils with four goals and two assists. Offit contributed five points (three
goals, two assists) and Dionne had three goals.
The Duke offense was
aided heavily by faceoff specialist Brendan Fowler who won 20-of-28 (.714)
draws, including 13 in row at one point, to repeatedly give the Blue Devils
possession. Overall, Duke won 21 of the game’s 30 faceoffs and Fowler was named
the NCAA Championship’s Most Outstanding Player for his
performance.
Senior defenseman
Brian Megill (Clark, N.J.) was the Orange’s best answer for Fowler.
Megill was 5-for-7 (.714) at the X and picked up six ground balls in his
collegiate finale.
Duke outshot the
Orange, 46-36. The Blue Devils also held a 44-27 advantage in ground
balls.
The Orange is now 11-6
all-time in NCAA title games, including a 5-3 mark under head coach John
Desko.
Game
Notes: Monday’s loss snapped the Orange’s
seven-game winning streak … It was also SU’s first loss to ranked opponent this
season (9-1) … Syracuse is 6-4 all-time against Duke with the Blue Devils
winning the last three series meetings … Redshirt senior Stephen Ianzito
(Clay, N.Y.) collected a career-best five ground balls … Marasco finished
the season with 42 assists, tied with Kenny Nims (2009) and Mike Powell (2002,
2004) for ninth on SU’s single-season record list … Marasco’s 87 career assists
rank ninth on the Orange’s all-time list … Senior Joe Fazio (Syracuse,
N.Y.) scored his first career goal in the fourth quarter … At halftime, the
NCAA recognized the 25-year anniversary of the Orange’s 1988 national
championship in an on-field ceremony.
Wild Pitch Sends B-Mets Past Sea Dogs, 6-5
BINGHAMTON, NY – Josh Rodriguez scampered
home with the game-winning run on a wild pitch by Jeremy Kehrt in the bottom of
the ninth as the Binghamton Mets walked off past the Portland Sea Dogs, 6-5
Monday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium.
Rodriguez led
off the ninth with a hard hit line drive right at third baseman Michael
Almanzar. It hit off of his glove and bounced into the seats beyond third base
resulting in a ground-rule double. Cesar Puello moved him to third base on a
ground ball to second base for the first out, but Allan Dystra then struck out
for out number two. With Cory Vaughn batting Kehrt bounced an 0-2 curveball in
front of home plate allowing Rodriguez to score the game-winning run.
Portland got the offense
going immediately against B-Met starter Jacob deGrom. The first four hitters
reached base, and Almanzar singled home Shannon Wilkerson for the first run of
the game. deGrom buckled down after the single, and retired the next six batters
to avoid further damage.
In the fifth deGrom sent an
errant pickoff attempt over Dykstra’s head at first base and into the stands,
which allowed Wilkerson to score from second base. The error put the B-Mets down
2-0, but the offense came back in the bottom half.
Dykstra broke the tie in
the bottom of the sixth; the lefthander led off the inning by launching a solo
home run over the right field wall. This is the second consecutive game Dykstra
has hit a home run. He came through again in the seventh with an RBI double into
the right-centerfield gap. He finished the afternoon three extra base hits and
two RBI.
John Church ran into
trouble in the eighth inning for the B-Mets. After retiring the first batter of
the inning, the next four reached base to tie the game at four runs apiece. He
was lifted for Jeff Walters, and Heiker Meneses hit his first pitch of the game
into left field for a base hit. Matt Spring scored on the play, and the Sea Dogs
took a 5-4 lead.
The B-Met offense tied
things up once again in the bottom of the eighth. Darrell Ceciliani led off with
a double, and he scored two batters later on a Bonfe sacrifice fly. Walters then
pitched a scoreless top of the ninth before the B-Mets won it in the
ninth.
The win gives the B-Mets
(29-22) their third consecutive victory, and moves them into a tie with the Sea
Dogs (28-21) for the Eastern Division lead. The homestand continues Tuesday
night as the B-Mets welcome the Altoona Curve for a three-game series. First
pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM, with RHP Erik Goeddel pitching against RHP Casey
Sadler. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 6:20 PM on
Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

Scott Kreutter Scores Third Straight Patriot Sprint Tour Win at Eriez
Kreutter, 26, of Alden , NY , claimed his third
consecutive victory at Eriez Speedway Sunday Night in shocking fashion,
inheriting the lead on lap 17 after Justin Barger spun out of the top spot and
then staved off charges by Bryan Howland and Dave Ely for his fifth career PST
win, his third at Eriez.
“I love this track,” declared Kreutter in Victory Lane
. “For some reason we just have great luck here. Early on I didn’t think we
had what we needed. We were a little off on setup and we threw something at it
similar to what we had been doing here and it worked out. I love this
place.”
Kreutter struggled in his heat race, surrendering second
place on a lap 7 restart. He would earn just enough passing points to make the
redraw, which was where luck started going his way. Because the defending PST
America Champion was the eighth and final driver to qualify for the redraw, he
would receive the starting spot that was left, which would end up being the pole
position.
Despite inheriting the pole, Kreutter would settle in to
second place behind Barger. Kreutter’s No. 52 was unable to hang with Barger’s
No. 5 and the “Straight Shooter” found himself spending more time fending off a
hard-charging Bryan Howland, who was moving up swiftly.
“I couldn’t get it to hold down (on the bottom), but I
knew if I couldn’t go up top, it was going so slick coming off (the corner) up
there, so I just figured I’d bide my time and be patient, I think that’s what it
takes here.”

Kreutter was able to put some distance on Howland after
what would be the race’s final restart on lap 13 when the inexplicable
happened. Justin Barger, who had been dominating out front on the rim of the
track, spun out coming off of turn four, surrendering the lead to Kreutter.
Barger would do a ‘360’ and keep going in fifth place.
“I saw it happened and I thought ‘don’t bring the
caution out’. I figured it would be better for him to not bring out the caution
because he only lost a handful of spots. I was really happy a caution didn’t
come out because on restarts I couldn’t really hit my line good going into (turn
one).
The final eight laps were downright thrilling as Howland
stalked Kreutter through lapped traffic. With the two past PST Champions having
to carefully pick through the back of the field, Dave Ely was able to run them
down to make it a three-car battle.
With three laps remaining, Ely made a bid on the very
bottom of turn four to begin a three-wide maneuver but did not have the
momentum. His addition to the fray would allow Jared Zimbardi, as well as
Barger, to make it a five-car scramble for the final two laps.
Coming to the white flag, Barger, who was hanging it all
out running a perilous line on the top of the speedway, once again ran out of
race track and looped his No. 5, did a ‘360’, and kept going after falling to
ninth. With a caution flag once again not needed, Kreutter was clear to capture
the three-peat.
When Kreutter won at Eriez last year, it was a shocker
because it was accompanied with the $10,000 Patriot America Champion, this time
around he was just as shocked at how things played out.
“We didn’t have anything perfect tonight but we bided
our time and stayed patient,” stated Kreutter in Victory Lane after climbing
down from his wing dance.
Bryan Howland was gracious as the runner-up, quickly
running over with a big smile to congratulate Kreutter in Victory Lane on their
orchestration of such a quality race. Howland felt that he once again had a
great setup, but Kreutter did his job to not surrender the lead. With his
second-place showing, Howland retains the PST America Point
lead.
Dave Ely completed a quality weekend in Northwest
Pennsylvania at two tracks he had never been to, as he crossed in third. Ely
dominated his heat race and was in the mix down to the final two laps for the
win.
Jared Zimbardi, like Ely and Barger, dominated his heat
race and drove up from seventh to finish in fourth. Lone Canadian competitor
Mitch Brown scored his first top five on America soil.
Tommy Wickham flipped in his heat race but he and his
crew made repairs to his No. 75 and drove from 21st to finish sixth
for the second straight race. Kyle Drum won the Original Pizza Logs Four Laps
of Fame and finished seventh, ahead of George Suprick, who was
eighth.
Justin Barger may have spun twice, but by not stalling
his No. 5, he finished ninth and in doing so, salvaged a ton of points in his
pursuit of the championship. Bruce DeWick scored his second top 10 in as many
starts at Eriez.
A great field of 22 sprint cars filed in to the pits for
a beautiful afternoon event at Eriez. Only one car was not running at the
finish and the checkered flag on the sprint cars fell at 8:25 P.M. The series
will return to Eriez on September 1 for the traditional Labor Day event. For
more information, visit www.PatriotSprintTour.com.

Andy Bachetti Doubles Down to Break Hearn’s Strong Hold
West Lebanon, NY: Brett Hearn
has been the dominate driver in the Big Block Modifieds at the Valley of Speed
since the beginning of the season, but his quest for 5 in a row came to an end,
thanks to the Wild Child. For the fans in the stands, that wasn’t
the only excitement that the night of racing at the legendary high banks had to
offer.
It comes as no
shock that Brett Hearn has been dominating as of late. And this
year at the Valley of Speed, he has clearly put himself in the position of the
man to beat when it comes to the Big Block Modifieds. So as the 30
lap feature event took to the speedway, everyone was gunnin’ for the #20H.
Kim Lavoy and
Wayne Jelley brought the field to the green, but the caution came out quickly as
a couple of cars got into a jingle in turn 2. The field regrouped,
and started again with the #34L of Lavoy still out front. Eddie
Marshall powered his way into the lead by lap 4, and held strong till the
caution flew again on lap 12.
That put the #34B
of Andy Bachetti right on the heels of Marshall on the restart.
And by lap 16, Bachetti took over, and powered away from the
field. Hearn battled his way through the field, getting to the
runner up spot by lap 22, but could not run down Bachetti’s #34B.
At the checkers,
Andy Bachetti captures his first for 2013, followed by Hearn, Marshall, Keith
Flach and J.R. Heffner.
In the Small
Block Modified feature, Steve Hough drove his #34 to the lead by lap 3, but
handed it over to the #34B of Bachetti on lap 20, giving Andy Bachetti 2
Modified wins in one night. Hough had to settle for
2nd, followed by Jason Herrington, Chad Pierce, and Wayne Jelley.
The 25 Lap Pro
Stock Power Play Series presented by Tinkers took to the fast half mile earlier
in the night. The #23 of Chuck Towslee controlled the top spot
early on holding off challenges all racing long. But handling
faded late in the event, giving the lead to the #322 of Jay Casey by lap 16.
But Casey’s hold
on first soon ended as the #8 of Jay Corbin used a lap car pick to power out
front by lap 22, and checked out on the field. Corbin took the win
followed by Casey, Robbie Speed, Towslee, and Jason Casey.
The Budget
Sportsman Feature was action packed from start to finish with a special
2nd Annual $2,000 Andrew Sherman Cup. Robbie Knipe
powered his #18 out front early of the stacked 39 car field. But
the biggest player in the event was the caution flag, as it flew early and
often.
The first was on
lap 2 with multiple cars tangling in turns 3 and 4. That brought
out a brief red flag. Once the green silk flew again, Knipe and
Robbie Speed’s #4NY battled it out up front while the field behind them was like
an angry beehive of action.
Caution slowed
the race again on lap 9, then again on lap 11, and again on 12.
With all that going on, the #1 of Tyler Dipple quietly took over the top
spot from Knipe. A scaring wreck on lap 15 brought the field to
another red flag as the #25 of Colin Clow and #74 of Chris Lynch came together
causing Lynch to spin wildly down the front stretch making heavy contact with
the outside wall and several other cars. All drivers were checkout
and ok, but Lynch’s night was over, and Clow was DQ’d for rough driving.
When racing
resumed, Dipple was out front, with Tommy Johnson’s #45 hot on his heels.
But Johnson could not muster enough to get to Dipple, as the #1 checked
out on the field. At the checkers, Tyler Dipple crossed the line
first, followed by Johnson, Knipe, Jake Jelley, and Josh Gaylord.
At the conclusion
of the race, and official mechanical protest was placed on the #1 of Dipple,
therefore the finish is considered ‘Unofficial’. The outcome of
that protest will be posted on our website by mid-week.
Earlier in the
night, the racing got started off with some great racing action in our Purestock
class as Shawn Perez captured PS#1, Jay Casey scored the win in PS#2, while Ray
Hall Sr held on to win in PS#3.
Next Saturday May
25th, it’s All Star Tractor Trailer Training and Buanno trucking

Baseball Slips, 10-3, To Binghamton On Senior Day, Earning No. 3 Seed
The outcome – Binghamton will be the No. 2 and UAlbany will be the No. 3 after the Bearcats overcame the Great Danes, 10-3, at Varsity Field in the regular season finale.
Binghamton took a 2-0 lead on his first homer of the game, but UAlbany cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame. Senior leadoff batter Nolan Gaige got hit by a pitch, moved to third on Gordon Madej’s sacrifice bunt and senior Greg Muller’s single, and scored on junior Josh Nethaway’s RBI fielder’s choice.
However, Thomas tagged UAlbany starter Stephen Carey with another home run over the right field wall in the third, jumping out to a 4-1 advantage.
The Bearcats added another pair of runs in the top of the fifth, stringing together two singles and a sacrifice bunt. With first base open, Carey got the sign to intentionally walk Thomas, but the first pitch went to the backstop, allowing Bill Bereszniewicz to score. Zach Blanden also crossed the plate in the inning on a one-out fielder’s choice.
The bats fell silent for both squads until the eighth inning when Binghamton tacked on four more runs, taking a 10-1 lead. The Bearcats took advantage of a leadoff walk and followed with a double, two singles, and another double off reliever Joey Moore. Freshman Sam DeCelle came out of the bullpen and ended the side with a strikeout.
In the bottom of the frame, the Great Danes finally got the bats going, as Madej led off with a single to shortstop and Nethaway brought him home, ripping a ground rule double to left centerfield. Junior D.J. Hoagboon got in on the action as well, belting a double down the left field line, plating Nethaway.
However, that would be the last runs of the ballgame, as senior Brian Gauthier held the Bearcats off in the top of the ninth, and Binghamton closer Mike Kaufman set the Danes down in order in their final at-bats.
Binghamton starter Jay Lynch (6-4) earned the win, tossing four innings, allowing one run and five hits. Jake Cryts also was solid on the mound, allowing just one hit in three frames. Using four arms, Mike Bunal and Kaufman each threw one inning out of the pen.
For UAlbany, Carey (1-2) took the loss, allowing six runs and seven hits in five innings of work. Preserving arms for the upcoming tournament, UAlbany shared the load across five pitchers in the game. Freshman Brendan Ryan tossed two composed innings out of the pen, allowing just one hit, while Moore, DeCelle, and Gauthier also saw time on the mound.
Offensively, the Great Danes totaled nine hits in the contest, led by Muller, Nethaway, and senior Luke Burns’ 2-for-4 performances.
Saturday was also Senior Day for the Great Danes, in which the squad’s class of eight -- Luke Burns, Austin Chase, Brian Gauthier, Kasceim Graham, Nolan Gaige, Greg Muller, Jeff Welsh, and Derek Zielinskiwere – were honored in a pregame ceremony.
Up next, UAlbany will trek to Lowell, Mass. to compete in the America East Conference Tournament for the fifth straight season. The Great Danes will face Binghamton at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at LeLacheur Park. The game will follow the 4:00 p.m. contest between No. 1 Maine and No. 4 Stony Brook.
Walk-Off Slam Burns B-Mets, 10-7
PORTLAND, ME – Portland Sea Dogs
catcher Matt Spring blasted a walk-off grand slam in the ninth inning to hand
the Binghamton Mets a heartbreaking 10-7 loss at Hadlock Field on Saturday
afternoon. Closer Jeff Walters suffered his first blown save of the season and
Binghamton watched their season-long five game winning streak come to an
end.
After a back-and-forth battle for eight innings, the B-Mets marched into the bottom of the ninth owning a 7-6 lead. Bidding for his twelfth save, Walters fell into trouble immediately, surrendering consecutive singles to Xander Bogaerts and Tony Thomas. The righty bounced back with two strikeouts, but walked Shannon Wilkerson on a border-line pitch to load the bases.
Having homered in the fourth inning, Spring took a 1-0 offering from Walters and went deep again, banging the walk-off round-tripper off the Citgo sign above the Maine Monster in left field.
In a game that saw 22 combined hits, the offense started early. Danny Muno led off the contest with his team-leading 27th walk of the season, stole second and scored when Cory Vaughn punched a two-out single to right.
Blake Forysthe followed in Muno’s footsteps in the second. The B-Mets catcher walked to start the frame, stole second, took third on a passed ball and came home on Wilfredo Tovar’s bloop single to left.
Portland countered with four straight runs off B-Met starter Mark Cohoon. Heiker Meneses put the Sea Dogs on the board in the second with a two-out RBI triple and came home when Cohoon uncorked his first wild pitch of the season. Spring launched a two-run homer over the Maine Monster in the fourth to give Portland a 4-2 advantage.
Binghamton fought back and converted two singles, a pair of stolen bases, a walk and a throwing error into two runs to tie the game in the fifth. Josh Rodriguez cut the deficit to one with an RBI single and scored later in the frame on a throwing error by Spring on an attempted steal.
Portland re-took the lead in the sixth against reliever Chase Huchingson. The southpaw paid for hitting Derrik Gibson with an 0-2 pitch immediately as Peter Hissey ripped a go-ahead triple to right. Tony Thomas added to the lead with a solo homer in the seventh.
Trailing by two, Binghamton came to life in the eighth against Brock Huntzinger. The visitors started the inning with three consecutive singles and scored a run on a wild pitch. Huntzinger bounced back to get two outs and nearly escaped the jam.
With runners at second and third, Tovar sent a roller to short. Gibson booted the grounder, allowing the tying and go-ahead runs to score.
Shawn Teufel preserved the lead with a scoreless eighth, but Walters (0-1) could not keep a lid on it in the ninth. Huntzinger (3-0) suffered his first blown save, but collected the victory after Spring’s late magic.
The B-Mets (23-19) complete their series in Portland in the rubber match on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM. RHP Cory Mazzoni takes the hill against LHP Drake Britton. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 12:45 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
POSTGAME NOTES: Binghamton’s last walk-off loss on a homer came against the Sea Dogs on July 20, 2011 (Mitch Dening off John Lujan)…Binghamton stole a season-high five bases…Both of Binghamton’s walk-off losses in 2013 have occurred at Hadlock Field

ORANGE RALLIES FOR 7-6 WIN AGAINST YALE, ADVANCES TO NCAA FINAL FOUR
Redshirt freshman Dylan Donahue (Camillus, N.Y.) capped the
comeback, scoring the game-winning goal off a pass from senior midfielder
JoJo Marasco (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) with 13 seconds remaining to propel
the Orange to the national semifinals.
“I think this is our ninth one-goal game this year. We lost three
by one and this is our sixth win by one," Orange head coach John Desko
said. “Unfortunately, the guys are used to being in these kinds of situations
and made some pretty good adjustments down the stretch to win the game. I
thought our defense played great all game long. While we didn’t have it at one
half, we picked it up on the other side of the field. I’m proud of the guys. Any
win this time of year is a great win.”
Donahue and Marasco both had one goal and two assists in the
victory. Marasco’s two assists couldn’t have come at better times for the
Orange. He assisted on senior Luke Cometti’s (Syracuse, N.Y.) tying goal
with 2:20 left and passed to Donahue for the winner.
To pull off the victory, Syracuse had to crack a Yale defense that
shut out the Orange for 43 minutes and 18 seconds during the course of the game,
by far the team’s longest scoring drought of the year.
Early on it didn’t appear that goals would be at a premium.
Syracuse stormed out to a 4-0 advantage and led 4-1 after the first 15 minutes.
Junior Derek Maltz (Ashburn, Va.) had two goals in the opening period and
Marasco and Cometti each had one. But Maltz’s tally at the 1:22 mark proved to
be SU’s last for nearly three quarters.
Brandon Mangan finally got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with four
seconds left in the first period to cut the deficit to three, and Yale’s Conrad
Oberbeck tallied the only goal of the second quarter when he collected a missed
shot and beat junior goalie Dominic Lamolinara (Arnold, Md.) low to make
it 4-2 at the half.
In the third quarter, Mangan and Oberbeck scored nine seconds
apart, at 5:23 and 5:14, respectively, to tie the score at 4-4. Then with 25
seconds left in the quarter Mangan found the cage again to hand the Bulldogs
their first lead of game, 5-4.
Yale eventually stretched its advantage to two, 6-4, on an
unassisted goal by Michael Lipin two minutes into the fourth quarter, but it was
all Syracuse after that.
Rice started the Orange comeback with an unassisted goal with 3:04
left in regulation. Then Cometti finished a Marasco feed less than a minute
later to tie it, 6-6.
Yale nearly retook the lead when Oberbeck got free on the crease,
but Lamolinara stepped out to meet him and stuffed his point-blank shot with
less than 90 seconds left to give the ball back to Syracuse.
The Orange cleared successfully after Lamolinara’s spectacular stop
and Desko called a timeout with 55 seconds to play. The veteran coach decided to
put the ball in Marasco’s stick on the restart and Marasco probed the Yale
defense for several seconds before Donahue popped free. Marasco threw the ball
to him inside and Donahue buried it with 13 ticks left to put the Orange up
7-6.
Dylan Levings kept the Bulldogs’ slim hopes alive by winning the
ensuing faceoff which led to a quick Harry Kucharczyk shot that sailed wide.
Yale coach Andy Shay took his final timeout with four seconds left to draw up a
play, but Lamolinara intercepted Mangan’s pass as the final seconds ticked off
the clock to seal the win.
Maltz and Cometti each had two goals to lead the Orange. Lamolinara
finished with nine saves in his first trip back to Byrd Stadium since
transferring from the University of Maryland after the 2011 season.
Mangan totaled a game-high three goals for the Bulldogs. Oberbeck
added two. Yale goalie Eric Natale had 11 saves, including seven in the first
half.
Syracuse's NCAA semifinal opponent will be the winner of Sunday's
pairing between fourth-seeded Denver and fifth-seeded North Carolina. Faceoff
will be either at 2:30 p.m. or 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 25 on ESPN2.
Game Notes: The matchup
with Yale marked Syracuse’s 30th appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals ... The
Orange improved to 27-3 in NCAA quarterfinal games and 64-21 in NCAA Tournament
contests overall ... SU’s nine one-goal games this season are the most ever for
the Orange in one year … Junior long-stick midfielder Matt Harris (Buffalo
Grove, Ill.) tied his season high with five ground balls to top 100
career grounders (104) … Harris also added a team-high three caused turnovers …
Senior defenseman Brian Megill (Clark, N.J.) caused the 100th turnover of
his career in the third quarter … The Orange improved to 19-4 all-time against
Yale and has won 10 straight against the Bulldogs.

"We may have the best deal in town on hot dogs and hamburgers. Wash it all down with your favorite Pepsi or Budweiser product, and you can't find a better way to spend the evening with your family or a few friends" said Rolling Wheels Raceway Park General Manager Jeff Hachmann.
