West Lebanon, NY: The mighty high banks at Lebanon Valley Speedway were alive and kickin’ this past Saturday Night as Sheldon Oil Company, Heavy Hauler, VP Race Fuels and Bedell Race Engines presented the night’s dirt racing action to the packed crowd on hand.
Sometimes, the simplest of parts, a $0.60 grade 8 nut, is the difference between winning and losing. That never usually ends well when drivers use that statement, but this week, that was one lucky nut for Matt Pupello.
At the drop of the green for the Big Block Modified 30 lap feature, Brian Berger’s #60 and the #42P of Matt Pupello roared into turn one, side by side. But the #42P got the jump and powered away going down the back stretch.
As the race wore on, and the laps ticked away on the 104.9 The Cat lap Counter, Pupello held strong out front. But back in the pack, Brett Hearn began his journey to the front, along with Andy Bachetti and Donnie Corellis.
With no yellow flags to slow the field and to give everyone a moment to catch their breath, the pressure was on. But, with the laps winding down; Berger made a late race charge as Pupello seemed to be held up by some lap traffic, along with Kyle Sheldon in his #42.
A wisp of smoke began to trail the #42P with 2 laps remaining, and with Berger and Sheldon right on his rear deck lid, Pupello just powered on, and captured the victory in true edge-of- your seat fashion. The smoke, was actually the rear end housing, as only 1 nut remained, holding it all together, and one nut handed Pupello the win, and an extra $3,000.
Berger won the battle and held off Sheldon for 2nd. Sheldon was 3rd, with Brett Hearn charging to 4th followed by Donnie Corellis.
In the Small Block Modified feature, the #66P of Seam Mandell held the lead early; until Steve Hough powered his #34 to the front of the field within a handful of laps, and went on to take the win.
Jason Herrington survived to finish a strong 2nd, followed by a hard charging Brett Haas. Ryan Darcy and Chad Jeseo rounded out the top 5 finishers.
In the Pro Stock feature, Brian Keough was out front early, but a mid-race tangle with a lapped car, took him out of contention, leaving Jay Casey’s #322 to take over the top spot, and power away for the win.
Rick Dempsey held on to finish 2nd, followed by Robbie Speed, Jay Corbin, and Jason Casey to round out the top 5 finishers.
In the Purestock features held earlier in the night, Chris Streeter scored the win in PS#1, Dan Cote won in PS#2, and Ray Hall Sr, went on to win in PS#3.
The 4 cylinders were also on tap, with Todd Goldstein taking the Dual Cam victory, while Brandon Ely won is the Single Cam Class.
Next Saturday Night, it’s Public Safety Night presented by Waste Management and Bulldog Concrete. All Public Safety Officials get in for free in the grandstands, and Budget Sportsman will also be on tap.
