One of the most burgeoning traditions with the Patriot Sprint Tour has been the
mid-July swing north of the St. Lawrence to Brockville and Cornwall Speedways, a
tradition which will continue for a fourth straight year this
weekend.
The Patriot Sprint Tour will run its third and fourth
full-point events in the PST Canada Series at the pair of popular ¼-mile ovals.
With this series still in its infancy, the point race is very tightly-knit,
which means that this weekend will have a significant impact on deciding who
will claim the $5,000 Championship at the end of the year.
New Yorkers Justin Barger and Jared Zimbardi currently
lead the PST Canada Series standings. Barger, the winner at South Buxton in
June, leads Zimbardi, who won the night earlier at Ohsweken, by six points.
Zimbardi, the defending PST Champion, has won three of the last five events at
“The BOS” and should be a major factor on Saturday Night. Barger has won two
events at Brockville , but has not been to the track since
2009.
Bryan Howland, a four-time PST Champion, was a winner at
Brockville in 2009, but has only been to Cornwall once; on that night he was a
DNF. Howland, the current PST America point leader, has some work to do if he
wants to claim the Canadian championship this year.
Other Americans expected on the weekend include Scott
Kreutter , Jeff Cook, Brandan Warner , Jason Barney, Dave Wickham and Dylan
Swiernik, among others.
Among the Canadian contingent will be Alain Bergeron,
the only driver from Quebec running for the PST Canada Championship. Bergeron,
a winner at both Brockville and Cornwall in 2009, will be joined from Quebec by
a host of drivers including Michael Parent, Dale Gosselin, Etienne Girard and
Patrick Vigneault.
The local fans are always enthralled by the appearance
of their favorites such as Rick and April Wilson, Paul Pekkonen, Devin Caron,
Lee Ladouceur, Kyle Fraser, Chris Jones and Tyler Rand, each of whom could be
seen on one or two nights of the weekend.
Western Ontario is also likely to be
well-represented this weekend with more than a half-dozen teams expected from
that region. Jamie Collard, along with his teammate from Michigan Dain Naida ,
are tied for third in the PST Canada standings, just ahead of Travis Cunningham,
who is fresh off his first career feature win last Friday at Ohsweken. Mitch
Brown , Glenn Styres, Keith Dempster and Chris Durand are among the other
drivers who will be heading east for the weekend.
Racing action on Saturday gets started at 7:00 while
action kicks off at 6:00 Sunday at Cornwall .
