CAMBRIDGE,
M.A. -- Women’s lacrosse player Rachael
Burek and men’s track and field athlete John
DeLallo have earned scholar-athlete honors for the spring season, the
America East announced Thursday. Burek and DeLallo lead a class of 132 UAlbany
student-athletes named to the America East Winter/Spring Honor Roll.
Senior Rachael Burek, a native of Rensselaer, N.Y.,
finished her career at UAlbany with a 3.56 GPA in business administration. On
the field, Burek earned a number of accolades. In 2013, she was named the
America East Offensive Player of the Week three times on her way to being named
the 2013 America East Co-Player of the year. Burek earned America East
All-Academic Team honors in 2011, 2012 and 2013, and was selected as a member of
the 2013 IWLCA All-American Northeast Region Team. She leaves UAlbany holding
the single-season records in assists (50) and points (84). In UAlbany’s
archives, Burek joins four other women’s lacrosse athletes as an America East
Spring Scholar-Athlete: Nikki Branchini (2011), Olivia Jarem (2010), Kate
Fontana (2007), and Theresa Masse (2002, 2003).
Sophomore John DeLallo, a native of Marietta, N.Y., boasts
a 3.87 GPA as a physics major and was named an America East All-Academic Team
selection in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. DeLallo’s performance on the
track earned him a 2013 Capital One Academic All-District ® Track / Cross
Country First Team selection. Helping the UAlbany men to their ninth straight
America East Outdoor Track and Field title, DeLallo led the 4x800m team to an
America East Championship win (7:32.52), while also placing fifth in the 1500m
run with an IC4A qualifying time of 3:48.79. In addition, DeLallo ran a
conference-best 4x800m time (7:30.45) at Penn Relays and won the 800m at the
Upstate Track and Field Classic (1:52.36). DeLallo marks the men’s track and
field program’s third America East Spring Scholar-Athlete, joining two-time
winner Valete Graham (2009, 2010) and Andy Allstadt (2006).
Including
Burek and DeLallo, UAlbany has produced 20 spring scholar-athletes: six in men’s
lacrosse, six in women’s lacrosse, three in softball, four in men’s track and
field, and one in baseball.
Also
including Burek and DeLallo, UAlbany saw 132 of student-athletes named to the
2013 America East Winter/Spring Honor Roll. Of the 132 student-athletes
selected, 63 were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll, signifying a GPA of
3.5 or higher. UAlbany men’s basketball earned the honor of leading all America
East basketball programs with 10 athletes named to the Honor Roll, five of whom
earned Commissioner’s honors. In total, 51% of UAlbany athletes were named to
the Winter/Spring Honor Roll.
Sixty
percent of America East student-athletes whom competed in winter or spring
sports during the 2012-13 season, 1,337 total, earned America East Honor Roll
distinction after achieving grade-point averages (GPA) of 3.00 or higher during
the second semester. Nearly half of those student-athletes (638 total) earned
Commissioner’s Honor Roll status for completing the spring semester with a GPA
of 3.50 or higher.
America East
is proud to have one of the most comprehensive academic awards programs in the
country. In addition to the honor roll, an All-Academic team comprised of
student-athletes that excel both academically and athletically is chosen in each
of the conference’s 20 sports by a committee consisting of faculty athletic
representatives, academic advisors and sports information directors.
Additionally, a scholar-athlete, someone who distinguishes his/herself as the
top student-athlete in his/her sport, is awarded. From that group, one male and
one female is selected the America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Finally,
the Academic Cup is awarded to the school with the highest cumulative GPA among
its student-athletes for that academic year.
