ALBANY, N.Y.
-- The University at Albany football team went head-to-head with one
another in an intrasquad scrimmage Friday night at University Field,
representing the Great Danes' final exam before opening the 2012 regular season
next weekend against Colgate.
The Danes' defense stood out under the
lights, recording six sacks with five of them for six or more yards lost,
including junior Andrew Smith's throw-down for a loss of eight. Freshman Jon
McGriff tallied a team-high two sacks, each for a loss of six. Also leading the
defense, junior safety Tremaine Wilson logged a team-high four tackles, while
classmate Prosper Mbongue-Muna and freshman JoJo McClary each had three. Wilson
was also top-notch on special teams, lacing his way across the field on a
91-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Offensively, redshirt freshman
Presley Beauvais impressed the stands, catching 11 passes for a total of 100
yards, including a 24-yard touchdown reception from freshman quarterback Ryan
Smith. Smith also connected with junior wide receiver Jameel Gay for a 34-yard
pass, as Smith completed 4-of-6 pass attempts in the scrimmage. Sophomore
quarterback Will Fiacchi completed three passes, including one for 19 yards to
sophomore Rhakeem Wiggins.
Next weekend, UAlbany opens the
season at home for just the third time in the program's 14-years at the NCAA
Division I FCS level, as well as the first time since 2005. The Great Danes will
play host to Colgate University Saturday, Sept. 1 at 6:00 p.m. at University
Field.
