Softball splits doubleheader with Stony Brook

VESTAL, N.Y.—Sophomore pitcher Demi Laney fired a six-hit shutout and sophomore second baseman Jessica Bump drilled a three-run home run, leading Binghamton (16-26, 7-10 AE) to a split against Stony Brook (32-13-1, 11-2-1 AE) in an America East softball doubleheader on Saturday at the East Gym Field. The Bearcats won the opener 3-0 but suffered a 2-1 loss in the second game.
Laney, who now has a pair of shutouts this season, struck out seven batters and did not issue a walk. She got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first inning and did not allow a run past second base the rest of the game. Her record is now 7-8.

Stony Brook starting pitcher Allison Cukrov, who leads the conference in win and ERA, retired the first 10 batters of the game. With one out in the top of the fourth inning, however, she surrendered an infield single to senior outfielder Meghan Tucker. Senior designated hitter Chelsea Horne drew a two-out walk, setting the stage for Bump, who drilled a two-strike pitcher over the left field wall.
In the nightcap, however, it was a fateful miscue that decided the outcome. Binghamton had taken a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Horne doubled home Tucker. In the top of the third inning, however, the Seawolves scored a pair of runs on a two-out throwing error by the Bearcats.
Cukrov pitched the second game as well and held Binghamton hitless the final six innings. Her record is now 21-7.

Despite not allowing an earned run, junior pitcher Rhoda Marsteller was tagged with the loss, dropping her record to 3-8.

Bump finished the afternoon 2-for-6.
Binghamton and Stony Brook will conclude their weekend series with a single game on Sunday at noon.

NOTES: Bump now has three home runs this season ... prior to the first game, Horne, Tucker, senior pitcher Kristen Emerling and senior outfielder Briana Andrews were honored as the four graduating players competing in their final home series.

Men's tennis captures fifth straight America East crown

FLUSHING, N.Y.—Binghamton men’s tennis extended one of the longest current streaks in any sport in the America East with a 4-1 win over UMBC in the championship match Sunday afternoon at the USTA National Tennis Center. The title was BU’s fifth consecutive conference crown and advances the Bearcats to the NCAA tournament for the eighth time in the last 10 years.

After Haggai boosted BU’s lead to 2-0, freshman Florian van Kann made quick work of his opponent at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-0, to give Binghamton a 3-0 lead. After the Retrievers earned a point with a win at No. 4, Dinia clinched the title with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 3. Patriot Sprint Tour Returns to Black Rock this Friday

PST Joins Forces with URC for Insinger Spring Sprint Nationals

Rich Vleck, ROCHESTER, NY (April 29, 2012)- In this 10th season of Patriot Sprint Racing only one speedway has hosted a PST-sanctioned event in each of the first nine years: Black Rock Speedway; after this Friday night that streak will move to 10.

This Friday, May 4, the Black Rock Speedway in Dundee , NY will host a Patriot-sanctioned race for the 32nd time, the most in series history.  It will be the first of three trips for the Patriots to the Yates County Power plant in 2012.  With $10,000 going to the PST America Series Champion, there is no question the 4/10-mile will be a critical component of the title chase.

This Friday’s race will also be unique because not only is it the 2nd Annual Insinger Race Fuels Spring Sprint Nationals, the United Racing Company will make their first of two trips to New York to strengthen the event.  Like the PST, URC was plagued by inclement weather this past weekend and because of a cancellation will now kick off their season this Friday.

With just one race in the book, the championship picture is wide open, with Steve Poirier currently holding the lead over Tommy Wickham, Chuck Hebing and Bryan Howland.  Defending series champion Jared Zimbardi is not only looking to rebound from his rough start, but he is looking to pick up from where he left off last August, when he scored the A-Verdi Championship, the most recent Patriot race at Black Rock.

Among the other Patriot competitors that have won at Black Rock that are expected to be in attendance include Penn Yan’s Lance Yonge, Rock Stream’s Tim Kelly, 2004 Track Champion George Suprick, Bobby Breen, Justin Barger and Alain Bergeron.  A plethora of drivers that have yet to grace Black Rock victory lane in a sprint car that are expected include Don Adamczyk , Scott Kreutter , Steve Collins , Dave Wickham, Todd Hoddick , Clint Ide, Paul Habeck, Charlie Donk, Steve Hutchinson, Sam Reakes IV, Kevin Ward Jr. Jessica Zemken and Brandan Warner , just to name a few.

Pit gates will swing open at 5:00 P.M., with hot laps getting under way at 6:00 P.M.  Racing will kick off at 6:45 P.M.  For more information, visit www.PatriotSprintTour.com.

Havens Leads Offense in Return to B-Mets, 7-1

ERIE, PA – In his first game of the season, Reese Havens collected three hits, including a two-run home run, to lead the Binghamton Mets past the Erie SeaWolves by a 7-1 score in the rubber match Sunday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park. Binghamton pounded out 10 hits, including five for extra bases, to make a winner of Zack Wheeler for the first time in his Double-A career.

Binghamton jumped on Erie starter Mark Sorensen in the first. Matt den Dekker started the attack with a double to the right field gap. Havens, activated from the disabled list before the game, ripped a two-run homer to right field on his first swing of the season. Havens launched six home runs in 58 games with Binghamton last year.

The B-Mets did not take their foot off the gas pedal in the second. Pedro Zapata dumped a single to center and was quickly brought home when den Dekker ripped a triple down the right field line. Rodriguez followed by with a walk to put runners at the corners. With Havens at the plate, Rodriguez forced himself into a rundown and stayed alive long enough for den Dekker to score from third.

Sorensen could not reach the third. Patrick Cooper took over and put up a scoreless frame before allowing a leadoff triple to Zapata in the fourth. The speedy outfielder scored one batter later on den Dekker’s sac fly to center.

Cooper allowed two more runs in the fifth. Eric Campbell singled and moved to third on a pair of wild pitches by the righty. Travis Ozga brought him home with a single to center. Juan Centeno scored later in the frame when Zapata beat out a potential double play.

The offensive support was long-overdue for Wheeler. In his first four starts, the B-Mets had scored a total of four runs. Given a seven-run cushion, the righty from Georgia collected his first Double-A win.

Wheeler did not allow a hit until the fourth and surrendered just two over his 5.2 innings. In the sixth he allowed a double to Brandon Douglas before inducing Rob Brantly to fly out to center.

With two outs, Pedro Lopez opted to replace Wheeler with Jeff Kaplan. Wheeler finished with six strikeouts on the day. Jordan Lennerton greeted by pounding an RBI double off the left centerfield fence. It was the only run Erie plated in the game.

Kaplan forced Ben Guez to ground out to end the inning and worked around a two-out single to put up a scoreless seventh. Armando Rodriguez got the nod for the eighth and took the game to the finish line with two scoreless innings.

The win was Binghamton’s first in a rubber match and secured their second series win of 2012. Wheeler (1-2) earned his first Double-A win, while Sorensen (0-2) was handed his second defeat.

The B-Mets (12-10) head to Akron, Ohio to start a four-game series against the Aeros on Monday night at 7:05 PM. LHP Darin Gorski takes the ball for Binghamton against RHP Steven Wright. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

Hearn Dominates To Go 3 for 3!

West Lebanon, NY:  It’s been quite some time in Lebanon Valley Speedway’s history to see a driver and team dominate in one class like we seen these past 3 weeks at the mighty high banks.  Brett Hearn has come with his ‘A’ game in 2012 in the Big Block Modifieds to cement himself at the top of the leaderboard early in the season.

Contractor Sales rolled out the red carpet this past chilly Saturday Night at the Valley of Speed for the 30 lap Big Block Modified feature event.  At the front of the field early was the #55 of Mike Keeler with the veteran driver Denny Soltis in his #0.

The green flag flew and the #55 of Keeler took control early and pulled a comfortable lead on the rest of the field.  But the caution flew just as lap 1 completed as Wayne Jelley lost the handle on his #45J in turn 4 while running 3rd and collected up 11 racecars, blocking the speedway, and causing a red flag while the track was cleared.

Once the track was cleared, the caution returned and damage was pretty severe for several cars.  Most would return with some damage including Kenny Tremont Jr, Donnie Corellis, Brett Hearn, JR Heffner, and Jelley as well.

The field was reset, and restarted with Keeler still in control.  But the #98S of Kolby Schroder tried to get the jump on Keeler twice, but that only got him a trip to the rear of the field for back to back jumping the restart.

Once that was straightened out, the green flew again with the #55 out front followed by Paul Gilardi and Brian Berger.  But all eyes were on the back of the field and Tremont, Hearn, Corellis and Heffner were charging through the field to get back to the front.

Tremont’s #115 lost the handle early and began to fade from contention, while Corellis, Hearn and Heffner still were moving forward.  But Hearn was making it clear that the #20H was still in top performing condition and made easy work of the field reaching the top 5 by the halfway mark.

Kyle Sheldon made a bid for the top spot as the laps began to wind down on the Kokosa Oil Lap Counter, but it was Hearn that charged to the first, and passed both Sheldon and then Keeler to take the lead, and the win with just 5 laps remaining.

As the checkers flew, the #20H took his 3rd win of the year followed by Sheldon’s #42.  Eddie Marshal battled to finish 3rd, followed by Heffner and Keeler to round out the top 5.

In the Budget Sportsman Feature of 33 cars, Chris George brought the field to green and had the early lead until Chris Lynch’s #74 charged to the top spot by lap 5.  Lynch held the lead until 4th generation driver Bobby Hackel IV took over the top spot on lap 8 from Lynch and never looked back.

Even a couple of late race cautions could deny the #97 from victory lane.  Lynch crossed the line for 2nd followed by Tim Hartman Jr, Tommy Johnson, and Jake Jelley to round out the top 5.

The LV Sportsman saw the #83 of Chad Pierce out front early in the 2 lap affair, but a hard charging Steve Meilleur took over the top spot by lap 15 and stole the show.  Pierce had to settle for 2nd, with Frank Harper finishing 3rd.  Kim Herrick and Brett Haas completed the top 5 at the checker.

The Pro Stocks put another full fendered frenzy for their 20 lap feature event that had the #17 of Nick Hilt out front at the early part of the event.  With 2 and 3 wide racing for much of the event, the veteran racer Robbie Speed powered his way to the top spot before halfway, and pulled away from the field.

At the checkers, Speed took the win with a hard charging Jay Corbin having to finish 2nd.  Nick Hilt had to settle for 3rd while Jason Casey and Victor Hopkins completed the top 5 finishers.

At the opening of the night’s action, the Purestocks completed their feature events with PS#1 won by Lloyd Tomlin, John Devine held on the win PS#2, and John Filarecki took PS#3.

Next Saturday night it’s Boomer’s Performance and Funplex Funpark Night with Kids Giveaways and the special 20 Lap Boomer’s Purestock Clash!  All weekly divisions will be on hand including the 4 cylinders!

UAlbany Men’s Lacrosse Falls To Stony Brook, 12-11, In Regular-Season Finale

Albany, N.Y. - Despite five goals from Ty Thompson, and a late goal by Joe Resetarits that tied the game, UAlbany fell to Stony Brook, 12-11, in America East Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday evening at John Fallon Field. The win sealed up the regular-season title for the Seawolves, and gave UAlbany the third seed in the America East Championship field. The Great Danes will face UMBC in tournament action in Baltimore on Wednesday.
UAlbany jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Thompson and Resetarits, both assisted by Miles Thompson. Stony Brook ended the shutout at 11:49, getting the first of two goals from Russ Bonanno. The Great Danes responded, scoring another pair of goals before the end of the first quarter, getting an unassisted shot from Resetarits before he assisted on Will Stenberg's goal with just 1:23 left to play.
Stony Brook struck first in the second, getting a goal from Matt Bellando to cut the UAlbany lead to 4-2. Resetarits completed a hat trick with his 40th goal of the season at 9:58 with another assist from Miles Thompson. However, Stony Brook scored the next five goals of the game, getting two from Kyle Belton before Bonanno added his second. Belton then scored two more, getting assists from Jeff Tundo on both, including the final goal of the half, with just 11 seconds on the clock to put Stony Brook up, 7-5, heading into the break.
Ty Thompson scored his second of the game to start the third quarter, but Stony Brook responded with a man-up goal less than a minute later on a tally by Mike Rooney. Lyle Thompson found the back of the net at 1:50, before Ty netted his third of the game with an assist from Miles with under a minute left to play, tying the score at 8-8 with one quarter left.

Ty started the fourth just as he finished the third, netting his fourth goal of the game to give UAlbany its first lead of the second half. Stony Brook responded with three straight, including a man-up goal by Nick Watson with 8:53 left to play to push the Seawolf lead to 11-9. UAlbany came roaring back, getting back-to-back goals from Ty Thompson and Resetarits, tying the game at 11-11 with just 1:34 left on the clock. Stony Brook came away with the ensuing faceoff, and got a fifth and final goal from Belton with eight seconds remaining. Lyle Thompson won the faceoff after the goal, but the Great Danes could not connect before the final horn.
UAlbany outshot Stony Brook, 39-30, and held a 32-22 advantage in groundballs, thanks in part to Keith Olsen's work in the faceoff circle, as the senior went 17-of-24 for the Great Danes. UAlbany goalkeeper Max Huber played all 60 minutes, making eight saves. Sean Brady also played a complete game for the Seawolves, making 11 saves in the net.

UAlbany (4-10, AE 3-2) will travel to UMBC to take on the second-seeded Retrievers on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Stony Brook (5-9, AE 4-1), which won its third-straight regular season title, will host fourth-seeded Hartford on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. The winners will play for the America East Championship title and automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament at the home field of the highest seed on Saturday.

Great Danes Sweep Maine In America East Baseball Doubleheader Action

Orono, Maine - Zach Kraham pitched a seven-inning complete game, allowing just three hits in the first game, while Craig Lepre sent an RBI triple down the right field line to send the winning run home in the nightcap, as UAlbany swept Maine in an America East Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday at Mahaney Diamond. The Great Danes posted a 4-2 victory in game one, and recorded a 1-0 win in 10 innings in game two for the sweep.

UAlbany got on the board first in the early game, plating three runs in the top of the fifth. Joey Tracy led off with a walk, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jeff Welsh. Tracy moved over to third on a ground out, and the Great Danes got runners on the corners after a walk issued to Gordon Madej. Nolan Gaige recorded one of his three hits with an RBI single to score Tracy, before coming home himself on a two-run triple by D.J. Hoagboon to give the Great Danes a 3-0 lead. Maine responded in the bottom of the inning, getting two runs. Mike Fransoso recorded an RBI double, while Troy Black came home on a fielder's choice. Kraham got Scott Heath to strike out swinging to end the inning and preserve the Great Danes' one-run lead.

UAlbany added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, as Lepre came home on a sacrifice fly by Pete DiResta. Kraham went back to work in the bottom of the inning, getting three groundouts to end the game with a UAlbany victory. Kraham struck out four opposing batters in the game. Stephen Perakslis went six innings on the mound for Maine, fanning five while scattering five hits and allowing all four runs.

The second game was a pitcher's duel between UAlbany's Sean Lucas and Maine's Shaun Coughlin. Both starters went eight innings for their respective teams without allowing a run. Lucas scattered eight hits and struck out six without issuing a walk. Coughlin allowed just three hits to the Great Danes, while striking out one and issuing one walk.

Neither team could get on the scoreboard in regulation innings, sending the game to the tenth. UAlbany broke the 0-0 tie in the top of the frame, as Brian Bullard singled to right center with two outs on the board. Lepre got ahold of a pitch in the next at bat, sending a triple sailing down the right field line, and sending Bullard across home plate. The Black Bears got a baserunner in the bottom of the inning, but the Great Danes turned a double play to end the frame and come away with the 1-0 victory.

UAlbany (14-26-1, AE 8-5) and Maine (21-19, AE 7-4) will return to action on Sunday for the conclusion of the three-game series.

SU LACROSSE RALLIES, BUT COMES UP SHORT IN 8-6 LOSS AT #3 NOTRE DAME

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – After failing to score in the first half, No. 17 Syracuse (7-7, 3-3 BIG EAST) recorded six goals after intermission, but came up short in an 8-6 loss to No. 3 Notre Dame (11-1, 6-0 BIG EAST) on Saturday, April 28 in front of a sold-out crowd of 4,522 at Arlotta Stadium.
The Orange trailed 4-0 at the half, and 6-3 after three quarters before rallying to get within one, 7-6, midway through the final period. Syracuse was never able to tie the game though, and Will Corrigan added an insurance goal for the Irish with 7:10 left to produce the final score.
Junior JoJo Marasco (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and senior Bobby Eilers (Simsbury, Conn.) led the Orange with three points each. Marasco finished with two goals and one assist, while Eilers recorded one goal and two assists. Redshirt senior Tim Desko (Syracuse, N.Y.) also contributed two goals for the Orange.
The Irish opened up a 3-0 lead after the first quarter on goals by Jim Marlatt, Westy Hopkins and Ryan Foley.
In the second quarter, Pat Cotter scored on Notre Dame’s only shot of the period to extend the Irish advantage to 4-0 at the break.
The Orange scoring drought reached 37:53 before Desko fired a left-handed laser past Notre Dame goalie John Kemp at the 7:07 mark of the third quarter to get Syracuse on the scoreboard. Senior long-stick middie Joe Moore (Plainsboro, N.J.) followed with an unassisted goal in transition to cut the Notre Dame advantage to 4-2.
With the momentum starting to swing Syracuse’s way, the Irish responded by scoring two of the third quarter’s last three goals, including one by Foley with one-tenth of a second left in the stanza. Foley’s last-second goal pushed the Notre Dame lead to 6-3 heading into the fourth quarter.
Marasco and Notre Dame’s Sean Rogers traded goals in the first two minutes of the final period, and consecutive goals by Desko and Eilers followed to close the gap to 7-6 with 7:43 left in regulation. Eilers’ extra-man goal with the Orange’s last as Notre Dame’s top-ranked defense held Syracuse scoreless the rest of the way.
Seven different players had goals for Notre Dame. Foley led the way with two goals. He also added an assist to finish with three points. Rogers (1g, 2a) also had three points for Notre Dame to match Foley for team-high scoring honors.
Kemp made 11 saves for the Irish to record the win, including seven stops in the first half. His counterpart, Bobby Wardwell (Clifton Park, N.Y.), finished with nine saves for Syracuse.
Syracuse outshot the Irish, 31-21, for the game. The Orange also held the advantage in ground balls (26-24) and faceoffs (9-8).
Next up for Syracuse is the Villanova Wildcats. The Orange and Wildcats meet at 7 p.m. in the semifinals of the inaugural BIG EAST Championship on Thursday, May 3 at Villanova Stadium. The game will air live on ESPN3 (Internet only) and tape-delayed on ESPNU at 11 p.m. Thursday.
Game Notes: The Irish finished unbeaten in BIG EAST play for the first time to win the conference regular-season championship outright … Marasco extended his point-scoring streak to 22 games … The loss was Syracuse’s first to Notre Dame … The Orange is now 5-1 all-time against the Irish.

Albany, N.Y. - Junior Dean Mercuris finished with four tackles, a sack for a four-yard loss and one forced fumble to lead the defense to a 69-24 over the offense in UAlbany football's annual Spring Game, held on Saturday afternoon at University Field. The squad completed 102 plays in the controlled scrimmage.

Freshman defensive lineman Mike Smith finished with three of the defensive squad's 10 sacks. The Great Danes totaled 56 tackles and four interceptions.

Buddy Leathly led the quarterbacks, going 6-of-13 for 62 total yards, including a long pass of 49 yards to wide receiver Kevin Chillis. Seven other players had catches for the offense, including freshman Pat O'Connor, who caught Smith's 30-yard pass at the end of the game. Sean Kenney punted twice for 105 yards and went 1-for-2 on field goal attempts. Freshman Tom O'Riordan connected on a 30-yard field goal as well.

"I think we made too many mistakes," said UAlbany head coach Bob Ford, who will be entering his 40th varsity season this fall. "There were some simple interceptions and turnovers, mostly on balls we shouldn't have thrown. The defense played well overall, but I am a bit concerned with our pass protection. We answered some questions, but not all of them. The rest we will have to answer in preseason. We came out healthy, which is our number one priority."

B-Mets Late Push Falls Short in 3-2 Loss

ERIE, PA – The Binghamton Mets left nine men on base, including the potential game-tying run at second in the ninth, in a 3-2 loss to the Erie SeaWolves Saturday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park. The B-Mets turned four hits and seven walks into just two runs in the defeat.

B-Mets starter Collin McHugh battled low temperatures and command issues in the first two innings, walking four and reaching a full-count against five batters. In spite of the difficulties, he managed to escape unharmed with two shutout innings.

After working quick innings in the third and fourth, McHugh ran into a roadblock in the fifth. The righty allowed his first hit with one out, an infield single to short by Niuman Romero. After Brandon Douglas snuck a bunt single to third, both runners moved up an additional base when Jefry Marte uncorked a wild throw to first.

Rob Brantly gave Erie the lead by lacing a two-run, opposite-field double high off the left field fence. The hit ended McHugh’s day after 4.1 innings. He walked a season-high four and struck out four. Kevin Mulvey entered and surrendered an RBI single to Ben Guez, giving the SeaWolves a three-run edge.

Binghamton finally plated a run without the benefit of a hit in the seventh. After cruising through six frames, Avery pitched himself out of the game by walking Travis Ozga and Rafael Fernandez. Reliever Michael Morrison replaced him, walked Kai Gronauer and uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Ozga to score Binghamton’s first run. Pedro Zapata flied out to left to end the inning.

The walks continued for Erie pitching in the eighth. Morrison was pulled from the mound after putting the first three on base, all via base on balls. Jefry Marte greeted new reliever Kenny Faulk with a bloop single to right, scoring Den Dekker. The single by Marte was Binghamton’s first hit with a runner in scoring position in over 29 innings. Faulk retired the next three he faced to preserve the one-run lead.

Binghamton pushed the tying run to second in the ninth against Faulk, but failed to come through with the big hit. Zapata reached on an infield single and swiped second base with two outs. He was stranded to end the game when Oswaldo Navarro struck out against Faulk.

Faulk’s six-out save was his first of the season. Avery (3-1) picked up his third win and McHugh (3-2) watched his three-game winning streak come to an end with the loss.

The B-Mets (11-10) wrap up their series with the SeaWolves in a rubber match tomorrow afternoon at 1:35 PM. RHP Zack Wheeler leads the B-Mets against RHP Mark Sorensen. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 1:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS CAP INAUGURAL SEASON IN IMPRESSIVE FASHION

ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose rattled off a 12-2 run that bridged the two halves to provide a fitting conclusion to its inaugural season as the Golden Knights cruised to an 18-6 victory over American International College in the 2012 regular-season finale for both squads today at Sullivan Field. Eight different players found the back of the net for Saint Rose (7-6), which tied its season-high with 18 strikes in the contest.

Sophomore attackman Brett McAuliffe (Watertown, NY/Watertown) paved the way for Saint Rose (7-6) with four goals. Meanwhile, freshman attackman Kevin Fleming (Owings, MD/Northern) and freshman midfielder Kris Miller (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) chalked up two goals each.

The Yellow Jackets (0-14) received three goals and an assist from freshman attackman Bryce Serriello (Centerville, MA/Barnstable). Senior goalie Eric Whettell (La Salle, Manitoba/Sanford Collegiate) picked up 14 saves as well.

Saint Rose led just 3-2 after 15 minutes, but junior attackman Rich Bamberger (Brimfield, MA/St. John’s) registered back-to-back tallies to ignite the aforementioned scoring outburst. Fleming and McAuliffe struck over the final two minutes of the second period to send the Golden Knights into the break up 9-3.

Saint Rose came out and scored six unanswered goals to start the second half to ensure a winning campaign in just its first season of competition. Bamberger fed Fleming just 31 seconds into the third quarter and freshman midfielder Louie Buccella (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) punctuated things by converting a feed from freshman midfielder Alex Schiponi (Kensington, MD/Walter Johnson) at the 4:27 mark.

Freshman midfielder Brian Kennedy (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) finally silenced the run for American International via a man-up marker with 1:47 left in the third.

Prior to the game, senior midfielder and team captain Joe Pompo (Fairmount, NY/West Genesee) was honored with a brief ‘Senior Day’ ceremony in recognition of his Saint Rose career. Pompo went out and scored two of the squad’s first three goals to start the day.

Hearn Wins At Malta

April 27, 2012: Malta, NY ― What a difference a week makes ― when management hosted the season opener the week before they opened the gates to 70 degree temperatures. Turn the clock ahead one week and the temperatures dropped some 50 degrees. It was cold but the faithful came out and they were not disappointed.

Many things at the Malta based oval were chilled but not Modified sensation Brett Hearn. The Madsen Motorsports team was on fire as Hearn easily secured his first win of the season at the Lyle DeVore promoted speedplant.

Hearn started the 35 lap event from the 16
"That was a heck of a race," said Hearn during post race ceremonies. "This track is great ― the inside, the outside, the middle ― it’s awesome."

All the while Hearn was soaring through the stellar field of cars, so was visitor Matt Sheppard. The defending DIRTcar Modified Champion headed down the Thruway after his Friday night track was canceled due to the weather. Sheppard’s entire evening was impressive, securing the win in his qualifying event earlier in the evening and coming from the 20
th), Jeremy Pitts and Dan Santabarba (came from 19th) rounded out the top five.
Ronnie Johnson, Ken Tremont and Don Ronca rounded out the top five.
Bobby Hackel was the victor in the 25 lap Budget Sportsman feature event. Mechanical issues forced Hackel to go home early on opening night, so he was making up for last week’s misfortune. Hackel and eventual second place runner, Rocky Warner, treated the frozen race fans to a good show.
"Rocky raced me real clean," said Hackel, a fourth generation racer. "We had a real good race, we banged doors a couple of times. Once he got by me that one time I had to sit [under caution] and think about what I was going to have to re-do to get by him again because he had the outside working real good."
The Pro Stock feature event had the crowd on their feet until the checker flag dropped on the 25 lap event. In his second outing at the ‘Great Race Place’ Chad Jeseo took his first feature event win, but not before putting on a show with opening night winner Rob Lavgevin.
Dan Older, a former Street Stock champion under old AS management and also an earlier heat race winner, came across the finish line in third place. Ken Martin and Brandon Emigh made up the mighty five.
