No. 18/20 UAlbany Football Continues To Climb National Ranks

Shop Now
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Improving to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the Northeast Conference over the weekend with a win over Sacred Heart, the University at Albany football team jumped four slots in The Sports Network Top-25 to No. 20 and two spots in the FCS Coaches Poll to No. 18, representing the highest the Great Danes have ever been ranked in both polls in Division I history. Last week, UAlbany appeared in the pair of Top-25 lists for the second time in program history and first time since 2006. However, this week marks the first time the Great Danes have stayed in both polls for consecutive weeks. A national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries select the Top 25 for The Sports Network, while the FCS Coaches Poll is based exclusively on a voting panel of head coaches in the FCS under the cooperation of the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and is administered by the Southern Conference. No. 18/20 UAlbany looks to keep its five-game win-streak afloat when the Great Danes play host to Wagner College this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Jon Morgan Garners NEC Defensive Player Of The Week Honor

Wal-Mart.com USA, LLC
SOMERSET, N.J. -- University at Albany linebacker Jon Morgan has been named the Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the league office Monday. Morgan’s two second-half interceptions allowed UAlbany to squeak by Sacred Heart, 23-20, and remain unbeaten in Northeast Conference play. The first pick denied Sacred Heart on a third-quarter red zone opportunity and the second interception sealed the victory with 00:57 remaining in regulation.

Morgan also made five tackles, including four solo, all of which stopped the ball carrier short of a first down. With Sacred Heart looking to add to a 13-10 lead on the opening drive of the second half, Morgan had other plans. The Pioneers attempted a pass play on 3rd-and-goal from the 6-yard line, only to watch Morgan come up with an interception at the two. Morgan struck again with the Pioneers operating at their own 45-yard line and looking to erase a 23-20 deficit.

The 6-foot-2 senior linebacker came up with his second interception of the game on a 3rd-and-4 play with 57 seconds left, ending any hopes of a Pioneer victory. The honor marks the seventh NEC Player of the Week award for UAlbany this season, and first in Morgan’s career. The Great Danes (7-1, 5-0 NEC) are back in action Saturday when they play host to Wagner College. Kickoff at University Field will be at 1:00 p.m.

UAlbany Battles Maine to a Stalemate in Late Season Conference Match

Anaconda SportsOrono, ME-- The University at Albany women’s soccer team played the University of Maine to a 3-3 draw on Thursday, Oct. 18 in an America East Conference battle. The Great Danes erased a 2-0 Maine lead at the half when their offense came to life for three goals within a two-minute span. However, the Black Bears scored a third goal of their own in the same time frame, leading to the eventual stalemate decision.
UAlbany (5-10-2, 2-4-1 AE) came into the match just one game behind Maine (7-6-3, 3-3-2 AE) in the conference standings. The tie puts the Great Danes in position to clinch a playoff berth with a UMBC tie/loss tonight or a win/tie against the Retrievers in their final regular season match this Sunday.

Maine opened up the match with a quick goal in the fifth minute by Nikki Misener. The junior midfielder then assisted on a second Black Bears goal in the 33rd minute. Maine defender Joanie L’Abbe sent a corner kick to Misener who then set up freshman forward Charlene Achille on her third goal of the season.
The Great Danes fought back to erase the lead out of the locker room.  Four goals were scored, including three by UAlbany, in an exhilarating two-minute time frame.

First, in the 53rd minute, senior back Casey Marks recorded her first goal of the season off a corner kick from freshman midfielder Krista Fitzpatrick. Then, less than a minute later, senior forward Shayla Bergeron scored unassisted for her team-leading eighth goal of 2012.

Both teams would contine the scoring frenzy to put the game at 3-3. Just shy of the 55th minute mark, Maine freshman Alex Abrahams scored off an assist from teammate Eve L’Abbe. 11 seconds later, the Great Danes once again evened the score. It was an assist from Bergeron to senior Chelsea Deverna, giving Bergeron 22 total points on the season.

Despite outshooting the Black Bears 21-11, including 6-2 in overtime, UAlbany could not push the ball past the goalkeeper again. The two teams were scoreless through the rest of regulation and two 10-minute overtime pers.

Maine won the cornerkick battle 6-5 while UAlbany had only four fouls compared to Maine’s eight. Great Dane goalkeeper Alana Brennan recorded three saves. Maine goalie Meagan Price-Leibenzeder saved eight shots.
UAlbany will play its final regular season game against UMBC at the Turf at College Park on Sunday. Game time is slated for noon. The Great Danes will be honoring eight seniors before the start of the contest.

Steel City Stampede Flashback – John Garvin Jr. finally cashes in!

2012 Chase For The Sprint Cup Gear at the NASCAR Superstore!
Sarver, PA (October 17, 2012) John Garvin Jr. owns and operates, along with his father John Garvin Sr., a salvage yard literally in the shadows of Lernerville Speedway. Any Tom, Dick or Harry can drop off and cash in on a load of scrap, but Garvin himself has not been able to cash in at Lernerville Speedway; that it is until last October at the Third Annual DIRTcar Round Up Steel City Stampede!

Prior to the Steel City Stampede, Garvin had collected four top fives in 2011 and had a few cracks at his first Precise Late Model feature win, but hadn’t sealed the deal. Maybe all Garvin needed was for the lights to be off. Racing features in the daylight of the Sunday afternoon rain date for the second time in three years, Garvin held off fellow junkyard dog and Sarver native Michael Norris to cash in on a $3,000 payday and fulfill a lifelong dream of standing in Sheetz Victory Lane. Norris battled Garvin for most of the race, but late race contact Garrett Krummert allowed Garvin to cruise to the popular win. Norris and Krummert chased Garvin to the checkered flag, followed by Chad Valone and Jared Miley.

After a wild ride on the first lap of Saturday Night’s heat race, Dale Blaney backed up his 2010 Stampede win over Danny Holtgraver with another $3,000 win in the 2011 Stampede. Recently crowned Ti22 Sprint Track Champion Carl Bowser raced home second ahead of Ed Lynch Jr., Danny Holtgraver and Brandon Matus.

The BRP Tour/Diehl Mods feature was another barnburner! In the first two years of Stampede competition, the Mods feature came down to three-car battles for the win with Del Rougeux Jr. holding off Jeremiah Shingledecker and Alan Johnson in the Inaugural Stampede and Chad Homan taking Rex King Sr. to the wall to score the win after battling Brian Weaver for most of the race.

Last year’s Stampede feature was a four-car battle with yet another New York invader battling BRP’s finest. Chad Brachmann is no stranger to Lernerville Speedway; running the late March/early April races on a semi-regular basis the past few years. Nor is he a stranger to Sheetz Victory Lane; winning the Diehl Mods feature on Opening Night 2007. But All Time division wins leader Brian Swartzlander and his rival Kevin Bolland are always tough to beat, as is then Defending BRP Champion Rex King Sr. Surprisingly, the difference on this given Sunday afternoon was the powerplant of Brachmann; a small-block! Given the track conditions during the afternoon, it shouldn’t be surprising that Brachmann had a huge advantage through the turns and enough horsepower on the straightaways to hold off the triumvirate of BRP/Diehl Mods stars to pick up the $3,000 payday and Stampede belt buckle. Swartzlander chased Brachmann to the checkers for second, but Bolland was penalized for jumping a restart and then caught the inside berm to spin out of contention, while King broke. King did, however, secure his fifth BRP Championship. Dave Murdick finished the race in third ahead of Rex King Jr. and Kevin Hoffman.

A threat to take the checkers anytime he rolls onto the Action Track, regardless of which stock car he straps into, Chris Schneider scored another big win in the Millerstown Pic-A-Part DIRTcar Sportsman/Stocks over Corey McPherson and 2010 Stampede feature winner Joe Kelley. McPherson followed up his runner-up finish at the 2011 Stampede with his first Pic-A-Part Sportsman/Stock Track Championship in 2012. Inaugural Stampede feature winner Rusty Martz finished fourth ahead of Jeff Buccella.

Butch Lambert learned the power of Facebook last year as his fans demanded his participation in the Steel City Stampede and he paid them back with his first Pro Late Model win at the Speedway where he was a dominant force several years ago in the Sportsman/Stock division; winning 22 features in the “Pure Stock” era of his career. Lambert held off young guns Colton Flinner and Kyle Zimmerman. Dan Karalagas and Joe Martin rounded out the top five.

After charging from the tail of the field to a thrilling second place finish the previous year at the Stampede, then Two-Time Defending Late Model Track Champion Dave Hess Jr. sealed the deal in the UMP/UEMS Modifieds feature ahead of defending event winner Brian Ruhlman and Inaugural winner Randy Hall.

Other feature and belt buckle winners last year included Adam Pletcher in the 4-Cylinders, Jeff Teeters in the STARS Mod Lites and Chris Potochnak in the Enduro 100. This year’s DIRTcar Round Up Steel City Stampede will also include the 305 Sprints!

After three weeks of flashbacks, we’ll get back to green flag racing next Thursday with rotating hot laps for all divisisons to kick off the Fourth Annual DIRTcar Round Up Steel City Stampede. Scheduled for Thursday-Friday-Saturday, October 25-26-27, the Stampede will include heat races for all divisions on Friday Night and then any necessary B-Mains and features on Saturday Night. Since its inception, the Stampede has expanded to 10 divisions and the FASTRAK Northeast Late Models and UEMS Modifieds have joined the BRP Modifieds as co-sanctioning bodies for the event!
