B-Mets Slip Past Sea Dogs in Ten, 5-3
PORTLAND, ME – The Binghamton Mets used 15
hits and three Portland Sea Dogs errors in a 5-3 win in ten innings on Sunday
afternoon at Hadlock Field. Wilfredo Tovar capped a four-hit day by driving in
the game-winning run with a single to center in the top of the tenth.
With the game tied at three
in tenth, Allan Dykstra walked against Portland reliever Michael Olmsted to
start the inning and was replaced by pinch-runner Juan Lagares. With one out,
Dustin Martin dribbled a roller to first. Olmsted received the toss from Travis
Shaw, but failed to step on the bag. The righty followed the error by walking
Juan Centeno to load the bases.
Tovar kept the rally going
by lofting a single into shallow center. Lagares scored easily from third and
Martin came home from second after a throw from center fielder Shannon Wilkerson
bounced off his leg and rolled into left field. Brad Holt made the lead stand
with a perfect tenth inning.
The B-Mets stole the
spotlight from Portland left fielder Jeremy Hazelbaker who busted out the lumber
to give the Sea Dogs the early lead in the first inning. The left fielder
launched a 2-2 offering from Greg Peavey deep over the right field fence for his
team-leading 18th round-tripper of the year.
The B-Mets responded with a
four-hit attack in the second against Portland starter Jeremy Kehrt. After a
pair of singles put runners at the corners, Juan Centeno bounced into a
run-scoring fielder’s choice. Reese Havens gave the B-Mets the lead three
batters later with an RBI single to left center.
Hazelbaker struck again to
erase Binghamton’s lead in the third. With a runner aboard, he sent a 3-1 pitch
over the right centerfield wall. The drive, his second homer of the day, gave
the Sea Dogs a 3-2 lead.
Binghamton used another
four-hit inning to tie the contest at three in the fourth. With runners at the
corners, Havens beat out a potential double play grounder to first, allowing
Tovar to score from third.
Kehrt exited after allowing
a season-high twelve hits over five innings and handed the torch to Brock
Huntzinger. The B-Mets nearly grabbed the lead in the sixth, but were denied by
Hazelbaker in left. Huntzinger walked the first two he faced and allowed a long
fly ball to left center to Havens. Huntzinger made a running grab at the wall
and threw out Tovar trying to scamper to third.
Peavey settled down after
Hazelbaker’s home run and posted 4-2/3 scoreless innings to close his day. The
righty retired 14 of the final 16 batters he faced, allowing just one more hit.
Jeff Kaplan bridged the gap to the tenth by allowed one hit over two scoreless
innings.
Chris Martin took over in
the seventh and posted three scoreless innings to preserve the tie before
Olmsted watched things come apart in the decisive tenth inning.
Tovar’s hit made Kaplan
(2-0) a winner for the second time this month. Peavey took the no-decision,
allowing three runs on six hits over seven innings of work. Olmsted (1-2)
suffered the loss.
The win gave the B-Mets a
series split in the four-game set with Portland. Binghamton finishes the season
series with a 13-6 record, the most wins in one season against the Sea
Dogs.
The B-Mets (65-69) continue their longest
roadtrip of the season in Reading, PA where they start a four-game set against
the R-Phils Monday night at 7:05 PM. LHP Mark Cohoon takes the ball against RHP
Trevor May. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 6:50 PM on
Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

Bachetti Wins as Points Wind Down at High Banks
West Lebanon, NY:
The month of August at the famed Valley of Speed brings with it everyone
‘A’ game as the season is only a few weeks away from wrapping up all the season
long point championships ane chances to get that coveted win on the high
banks.
This past Saturday night was no disappointment either, as the action
was hot and heavy in all classes, including the marquee feature event, the
Armory Garage and VP Race Fuels Big Block Modified 30 Lap
shootout.
‘The KingFish’ Mike King and John Ruchel brought the stacked field to
the green. But by the time the caution flew on lap 3 for a
spinning #101 of Jimmy Burns, Andy Bachetti had powered his #34B to the top spot
to secure his chance at a win. Then on the restart, yet another
caution slowed the field, this time for a multi-car incident that included J.C.
Flach, Kyle Hoffman and Keith Flach.
Out front though was the ‘Wild Child’, Andy Bachetti, taking full
control of the field. Caution flew again on lap 14 for the #60 of
Brian Berger, as his struggling night got worse with a blown right rear.
Bachetti was still in control, but the heat was coming as Kenny Tremont
Jr found the fast way around and began to hunt down the #34B.
Tremont wasn’t the only one, the #20H and current point leader, Brett
Hearn was turning up the heat as well as he made his way into 3rd by
lap 18, then past Tremont for 2nd by lap 24.
But Hearn had nothing for the #34B of Bachetti; as he held on to take
the win. Hearn finished second followed by Tremont, Kyle Sheldon
and Donnie Corellis.
Later in the evening, the Matt Plunkett Memorial 7 Lap Shootout was
held for those with 1 Win or less, that was won by Kolby Schroder who received a
$500 bonus.
Derek Schibi brought the LV Sportsman field to the green for their 20
lap feature event. His #12S stayed in control until lap 8 when the
#55 of Brett Haas powered his way past the #12s and took over the
lead.
After that, no one had anything for the #55, as Haas scored the
victory. Ryan Darcy raced his way to 2nd, followed by
Schibi, Kim LaVoy and Frank Harper.
In the Budget Sportsman 20 lap feature, Cody Hunt brought the field
to green with his #28. Hunt’s lead though was brief, by lap 4 the
#14x of Scott Duel powered by, and never looked back. At the
checker, Haas scored the win with Peter Carlotto, Tommy Johnson, Bobby Hackel IV
and Frank Hoard rounding out the top 5 finishers.
The full-fendered Pro Stocks took to the speedway for their 20 lap
feature which saw a 5 car shootout for the win in the closing dozen laps after
the early leader Robbie Speedway was taken out by a lap car.
Jason Casey, Chad Jeseo, Jay Corbin, Jon Routhier and Victor Hopkins
were all door to door and bumper to bumper for the remaining laps, but it was
Jason Casey who prevailed and took the victory.
Following Casey at the finish was Jay Corbin, Jon Routhier, Chad
Jeseo, and Victor Hopkins to round out the top 5.
Earlier in the night, the Purestocks took to the high banks for their
feature events, and in PS#1 Jim Groncki took the win while in PS#2 Ed Hatch
powered in for the win. While in PS#3 Bob Palmer finally scored
the win in their 12 lap feature.
Next Saturday Night it’s the Season Finale for the Big Block
Modifieds as Pepsi and JH Financial present a $3,000 to win Modified feature.
Also on tap is the Pro Stock ECHO Series along with all weekly
divisions.
Then on Saturday September 8th, it’s the Steve Hough
Motors and Boomer’s Performance presenting the 9th Annual Boomer’s
Performance 20 Lap Purestock Classic. Also on tap will be the
LV-AS Budget Sportsman Challenge, please the Steve Hough Motors 358 Modifieds,

Justin Barger Blasts to Patriot Sprint Tour Win at Brockville
Rich Vleck,
BROCKVILLE , Ont., (August 25, 2012)- Over the years, starting 10th
in a Patriot Sprint Tour event typically does not translate in to a trip to
Victory Lane . Over the years, sprint car events at Brockville Ontario Speedway
can often find passing at a premium; while in general that still remains the
case, Justin Barger defied that logic on Saturday Night.
Barger, of Montrose, NY, figured out the top of the
Brockville Ontario Speedway and took the lead from Dain Naida by lap 12 and
never looked back as he scored his third win of the year, his second in the PST
Canada Series to all but lock up the tour’s inaugural
championship.
After starting and finishing third in his heat race,
Barger found himself in the Original Pizza Logs Four Laps of Fame, where he
started and finished second. Despite not passing a car, those four laps gave
Barger the data he needed to make a charge in the feature.
“I had a tough start in our heat race which put us in
the dash but that actually helped us because we got the car rolling pretty
good,” noted Barger in Victory Lane after his third win at the ¼-mile oval. “We
got it really working well on the top. I changed so much stuff but I didn’t
change any torsion bars around because I knew we were pretty close there. We
just changed switched the shocks around.”
When the first caution of the event flew two laps in,
Barger had already driven from 10th to sixth place. Three laps later
when the yellow flag reappeared, he was fifth and was stuck in that position
until the race’s third restart on lap 10 when he got to work.
Up until lap 10, all of the lead competitors struggled
to find any bite off the top of turns one and two, but on that restart, Barger
bolted around Scott Kreutter and then Lee Ladouceur as they battled for real
estate on the inside of the track; carrying a full-head of steam into turns
three and four, where the top lane had been effective, Barger made an impressive
power maneuver to drive around Jamie Collard. Two laps later he made the same
pass on Collard’s teammate Dain Naida for the lead.
“I was just rolling around (the top) so straight it
worked for me,” noted Barger. “I tried the middle to the bottom early on but
that’s where everyone was and I wasn’t making any time so I had to go to the top
and it worked out for us.”
As Barger’s No. 5 pulled away from the rest of the
field, his nearest competitors attempted to use a similar line, but found
themselves having to fend off the drivers behind them. Collard, the winner of
the July Brockville event, was able to move around his teammate Naida to reclaim
second on lap 17 but two laps later slipped over the banking in turn three to
draw the caution. Two laps after that, he had a similar incident and was done
for the night. His misfortune would allow his teammate a pair of opportunities
to reclaim the lead however.
Naida put in worthy bids to take the lead back, as he
would get a solid run on the bottom through turns one and two on the restart,
but did not have the momentum using the low line in three and four to make his
claim stick. He was able to hold on for second though in his second appearance
at the track 11 hours from home.
Alain Bergeron used a harder tire compound on his No. 8B
and in the late stages when he drove from sixth up to finish a season-best
third. Jared Zimbardi, who won the Original Pizza Logs Dash, also came on
strong at the end to finish fourth. Lee Ladouceur was able to round out the top
five for the second time at “The BOS”.
Scott Kreutter won his heat and finished
in sixth, with youngster Devin Caron in seventh. Rick Wilson also won his heat
and placed eighth, with Keith Dempster and Kyle Fraser completing the top
10.
The A-Main did feature one bizarre moment under lap nine
caution period when Keith Dempster and April Wilson making contact and Wilson
flipping over her No.15aw. After a lengthy period upside-down, she was finally
able to emerge on her own from the awkward position.
The final PST America Races will take place this
upcoming weekend with a pair of stops in Pennsylvania at Mercer and Eriez on
Saturday and Sunday, respectively, as part of the Labor Day Weekend Tradition.
The PST Canada Series will conclude back at Brockville on October
14th. For more information, visit www.PatriotSprintTour.com.

Gorski Cages Sea Dogs in 5-1 Victory
PORTLAND, ME – Darin Gorski matched a
season-high with nine strikeouts and surrendered only one run to lead the
Binghamton Mets past the Portland Sea Dogs in a 5-1 win Saturday night at
Hadlock Field. The B-Mets collected ten hits, highlighted by a two-run homer by
Reese Havens, to snap Portland’s six-game winning streak.
The Sea Dogs needed a break
in the first to score their only run against Gorski. With two outs and Jeremy
Hazelbaker on first, Bryce Brentz lifted a high, fly ball to right. Dustin
Martin got a late read and it landed inside the line for a single, bringing
Hazelbaker home.
After stranding a runner at
third in the first two innings, the B-Mets cracked the scoreboard in the third
against starter Drake Britton. Allan Dykstra drove in Wilmer Flores from first
by blasting a double to the right field alley. Dykstra came home with the
go-ahead run when shortstop Xander Bogaerts booted a groundball by Jefry Marte
later in the frame.
Given the lead, Gorski
cruised through the middle innings. After allowing a single to Derrik Gibson in
the second, the southpaw retired 12 straight Sea Dogs, needing just 38 pitches
over the stretch.
The B-Mets added to their
lead and chased Britton from the game in the fourth. After two consecutive
one-out singles, the southpaw walked Pedro Zapata to load the bases. Havens
rolled a ground ball to short, but beat out the potential double play, allowing
a run to come home. Will Latimer replaced Britton and got the final out of the
frame.
In the top of the sixth,
Havens snapped a slump to give Gorski extra breathing room. With a man aboard,
Havens ended an 0-for-21 slide by blasting his tenth home run of the season over
the right field wall, kicking Binghamton’s lead to four.
Bryce Brentz snapped
Gorski’s impressive stretch in the sixth with a two-out single. Travis Shaw
walked to extend the threat, but the B-Mets starter induced Boagaerts to line
out to end the inning.
The lefty finished his
solid start with a bang. With a runner aboard in the eighth, Gorski racked up
his ninth strikeout, painting the outside black against Jeremy Hazelbaker. Ryan
Fraser got the final out of eighth and tossed a scoreless ninth to secure the
victory.
Gorski (9-7) earned his
third win in his last four starts, allowing one run on five hits over 7-2/3
innings. Britton (4-6) lasted just 3-2/3 innings, surrendering three runs (two
earned) on five hits. Latimer and Ryan Pressly combined for the final 5-1/3 for
Portland.
The B-Mets (64-69) look for the series
split Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM. RHP Greg Peavey takes the hill against RHP
Jeremy Kehrt. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 12:45 PM
on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

Comeback Falls Short In 4-3 Loss
PORTLAND, ME – Wilmer Flores’ two-run homer
in the ninth inning was not enough as the Binghamton Mets’ comeback bid fell a
run short in a 4-3 loss to the Portland Sea Dogs Friday night at Hadlock Field.
Sea Dogs starter Brandon Workman baffled the B-Mets, allowing just one run over
seven innings en route to his third win in three starts.
Portland broke a scoreless
game in the third inning against starter Gonzalez Germen. With a runner on
first, Jeremy Hazelbaker smacked an RBI triple over Juan Lagares’ head in dead
center field. Bryce Brentz followed by lining a run-scoring single to left,
giving Portland a two-run lead.
Workman cruised through the
first five innings, facing one over the minimum. After surrendering a single to
Eric Campbell in the second, the Texan put down thirteen straight
B-Mets.
Binghamton finally
scratched out a run in the sixth, a rally jumpstarted by a one-out triple by
Pedro Zapata. Juan Lagares wasted little time bringing him home by pushing an
RBI bunt single down the third base line. Lagares, representing the tying run,
advanced to third on a stolen base and ground out, but was left
stranded.
After allowing six hits
over his first three innings, Germen settled down and no-hit the Sea Dogs over
his next four frames. The righty got two quick outs in the eighth before
allowing back-to-back home runs to Travis Shaw and Xander Bogaerts. Brad Holt
entered and recorded the final out of the inning. The insurance runs factored in
heavily for the Sea Dogs.
Workman capped his night
with a scoreless seventh inning before handing a one-run lead to the Sea Dogs
bullpen. Caleb Clay tossed a perfect eighth, but nearly blew a three-run lead in
the ninth. After Lagares led off with a single, Flores blasted a two-run homer
to left center field, cutting the deficit to one. Raul Reyes reached on a
two-out single, but Jefry Marte struck out looking to end the game.
Germen (7-11) suffered his
fifth loss in his last six B-Mets starts. The righty allowed four runs on nine
hits while collecting seven strikeouts. Workman (3-0) earned his third straight
win, matching a season-high at any level with seven innings of work. The righty
struck out seven and issued no walks.
The B-Mets (63-69) continue their four-game
set against the Sea Dogs Saturday night at 6:00 PM. LHP Darin Gorski takes the
mound against LHP Drake Britton. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show
begins at 5:45 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

14-9
PORTLAND, ME – The Portland
Sea Dogs pounded out 17 hits, including nine for extra-bases, to hand the
