Matt Sheppard Powers to First Super DIRTcar Series Victory of the Season

ELBRIDGE, N. Y. – May 27, 2012 – Matt Sheppard patiently waited for an opportunity to pounce during Sunday night’s Super DIRTcar Series All-Star Weekend feature event at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park, then wasted no time when that chance arose. Sheppard, the two-time and defending series champion, started behind pole-sitter Billy Decker in the 66-lap race and used a double-file restart on Lap 21 to surge to the lead, methodically work his way through traffic, and hold off the 28-car field to earn his first Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modified points-paying victory of the year. “We were a little slow in the beginning of the race, but with these longer races, you know, sometimes you gotta set up for the second half of the race,” said Sheppard, of Waterloo, N.Y. “Fortunately for us, we were good in the second half of the race and that’s what it takes to win these long-distance races.” Sheppard finished fourth in his heat race, placing him in the redraw for the feature, where he drew a three to lineup directly behind Decker for the series’ second main event of the year. He quickly got past outside pole-sitter Billy Dunn and set his sights on Decker. “We got a lot of breaks tonight,” Sheppard said. “We drew a good number, we were able to get out front, got cautions when we needed them, and the car was fantastic. That’s pretty much what you need to win one of these races. You’ve got to have a lot of stuff go your way.” Decker settled into second and mirrored Sheppard’s moves through traffic, but was never able to close the gap over the final 45 circuits around the big 5/8-mile “Fast Track,” which lived up to its moniker on Sunday night. Danny Johnson, however, was forced to work hard for his podium finish. The winner of the series opener in Canandaigua, Johnson missed qualifying for the redraw, placing fifth in his heat race as his team worked through motor issues early in the night. He started the main event 13th on the grid and then got his elbows up. By lap 32, Johnson was able to work past Dunn for fourth, then slid past fifth-starting Brett Hearn to take third. “We struggled earlier, but in the end, to be able to get a top-three finish out of it, I’m real excited about that, what with all the trouble we had,” said Johnson, of Rochester, N.Y. “We’re happy to get a top-three finish out of the deal.” In DIRTcar Sportsman Modified action, Dan Wiesner held off the hard-charging Dave Marcucilli for his second victory of the year at Rolling Wheels Raceway, while Russ Marsden edged Joe Reeves in the DIRTcar Stock Car feature. Tex Gordon (Limited), Bob Kisselstein (Sportsman) and John Applebee (Modified) earned Mid-State Vintage Stock Car Club wins. McHugh Dazzles, B-Mets Secure Split, 6-2

BINGHAMTON, NY – Collin McHugh struck out a season-high eight New Hampshire Fisher Cats and the B-Mets scored five runs in the sixth inning to earn a 6-2 win Monday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. McHugh allowed just two runs over eight innings, his longest performance of the season.

After facing one over the minimum through three, McHugh hit a speed bump in the fourth. Two singles and a hit batsman loaded the bases, and Kevin Howard delivered with an RBI single to give the Fisher Cats the lead. Brad Glenn ripped a sac fly to center to make it 2-0.

Meanwhile, the B-Mets’ offense was stymied by New Hampshire starter Deck McGuire for more than half the game. The righty retired the first 15 B-Mets he faced before things unraveled in the sixth.

McGuire hit Reese Havens to start the inning and walked Kai Gronauer to put two aboard. A sac bunt set the table for Sean Kazmar who broke up the no-hitter and got Binghamton on the board with a single to the left side. Josh Rodriguez tied the game and ended McGuire’s day with a run-scoring single to right.

Aaron Loup entered and struggled with his command. The lefty hit Reyes with a pitch to load the bases and surrendered an RBI single to Jefry Marte that gave the B-Mets a 3-2 lead. Loup capped his day by issuing consecutive bases-loaded walks to Juan Lagares and Reese Havens. Ronald Uviedo entered and extinguished the flames by striking out Gronauer.

McHugh (5-3) easily shook off his difficult fourth inning and capped his day with four shutout frames, facing just one over the minimum. Excluding the fourth, McHugh faced no more than four batters in any inning. The righty gave up five hits and walked only one in the win.

The B-Mets added their final run on a single by Gronauer in the eighth and looked to Adrian Rosario in the ninth. The righty walked two, but induced Brad Glenn to line into a game-ending double play to post a scoreless frame. McGuire (2-5) suffered his third loss against the B-Mets.

The B-Mets (24-25) head south to take on the Reading Phillies in a three-game series that starts Tuesday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Miguel Batista takes the mound in a rehab start for the B-Mets against RHP Julio Rodriguez. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 6:50 PM on ESPN 1360 WYOS.

van Ingen advances to NCAA Outdoor Track Championships in 1,500

Senior Erik van Ingen is once again heading to an NCAA Championship Meet.
The three-time All-American finished second in his heat and 12th overall in the finals of the 1,500 at the NCAA East Regional Track & Field Meet on Saturday evening. His time of 3:48.37 trailed only Rich Peters of Boston University, who won the heat in a time of 3:48.46. The fastest overall time of 3:45.44 was recorded by Andrew Bayer of Indiana in the other heat. The top five finishers in each of the two heats, plus the next two fastest times, advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held at Drake University June 6-9.

“It’s great for Erik to be going back to the NCAA meet,” assistant coach Annette Acuff said. “The pace was pretty slow in his heat through the first 800 but he had a great kick to finish near the top of the heat at the finish.”

van Ingen, who has now qualified for seven NCAA Championship meets, will be making his second straight appearance at the outdoor championships. Last year he placed sixth overall in the 1,500. He is also a three-time NCAA qualifier for the indoor championships, where he placed fifth in the mile in 2011 and seventh this past season. With three career top-eight finishes at the NCAA Championships, van Ingen will be seeking his fourth career All-America accolade when he arrives at Drake in two weeks.

In addition to his track & field accomplishments, van Ingen also took part in the 2009 and 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships. His highest finish came in the 2010 meet, where he placed 43rd overall. Only the top 40 finishers, however, earned All-America honors.
In Binghamton’s 11-year NCAA Division I history, van Ingen has advanced to more NCAA Championship events than any other athlete. He is also tied with Rory Quiller for the most NCAA Division I All-America honors. Quiller was also a three-time All-American, placing second in the pole vault at the 2007 NCAA Indoor Track Championships, fourth in the 2007 outdoor meet in the same event and then capping his career by winning the NCAA pole vault title at the 2008 indoor championships.

During his illustrious career, Quiller advanced to five NCAA meets. He made the indoor championships in 2005, 2007 and 2008 and the outdoor meet in 2006 and 2007.

MACPHERSON NAMED TO RIMINGTON WATCH LIST

Coming off a season which saw him block for a 1,000-yard rusher for the second straight year, junior center Macky MacPherson is one of 50 players named to the Rimington Trophy Spring Watch List. The award is presented annually to the Most Outstanding Center in NCAA Division I-A College Football.

MacPherson is one of only four BIG EAST centers included on the list, and was also named to Phil Steele's 2012 Preseason All-BIG EAST Third Team two weeks ago.

Currently in its 13th season, the award is named after Dave Rimington, who was a consensus first-team All-America center at the University of Nebraska in 1981 and 1982, during which time he became the John Outland Trophy's only double winner as the nation's finest college interior lineman.

The Rimington Trophy committee uses four teams to determine a winner: the American Football Coaches Association, Walter Camp Foundation, Sporting News and Football Writers Association of America. The winner will be honored at Rimington Trophy Presentation banquet at the Rococo Theater in Lincoln, Nebraska on January 12, 2013.

Tommy Wickham Supreme at Stateline for First Patriot Sprint Tour Win

Tommy Wickham came in to Stateline unsure if he had even been to the speedway before, but he left with his first career Patriot Sprint Tour win, making an authoritative statement in his pursuit of the 2012 PST America Championship.

Wickham, of Constantia , NY , led all 25 laps of the only PST A-Main of the year at Stateline Speedway to become the fourth different winner in as many American races this season. In addition, “Quickham” or “Quick Wick” becomes the 50th different winner in Patriot History.

“It feels reel good,” exclaimed Wickham after the event which was indeed his first at Stateline. “Everything came in to play tonight. It was awesome.”

After driving from fifth to third in his heat race, Wickham earned a position in the redraw, where he selected the pole position. As the 22-car field hit the track for the feature, a light rain hit the 1/3-mile oval and changed the complexion of the track. After 10 minutes of running the racing surface back in and the persistent precipitation weakening just enough, the field reformed in two-by-two formation for a start to a race with plenty of unknowns present.

When the field took the green flag, Wickham quickly placed his Kleis Equipment/ Timberwolf/ Lawson Products No. 75 out front, something that had been tough to do from the inside row all night long. After what would be the race’s only caution flag flew on lap three, Wickham once again jolted to a comfortable advantage and never looked back.

Steve Collins quickly moved into second place, but would the runner-up spot to Don Adamczyk on lap 11. Both drivers had stayed in touch with Wickham up until that point, but as the lapped traffic became denser, the No. 75 seemed to excel, growing the gap between himself and his nearest challengers.

“A couple of times (the lapped traffic) was pretty hard, I had to bonsai it a few times, but we made it threw there and worked our way to the top side. It worked well on the top side. I never ran the bottom all night,” recalled Wickham. “I didn’t hear anybody close but mentally I was telling myself to calm down a little bit. I almost lost it there a couple of times.”

Once Wickham clicked off lap 13, the race became official and with the rain picking up it was possible that the race could be called if another caution flag would come out. On the flip side, despite holding a healthy lead, a caution flag could have been the opportunity Tim Kelly needed to have a shot at the win.

Kelly started in 10th, but his extra time on the track in the Original Pizza Logs Four Laps of Fame allowed him to soar up through the pack, especially in the final 10 laps. On the final circuit, Kelly drove by Don Adamczyk to come home in second.

Adamczyk’s third place effort tied his best career finish at Stateline, where he now has 10 straight top 10 finishes. His No. 21 was extremely fast early on, but Wickham was not deterred by lapped traffic, making it tough to close during the mid stages of the race.

Great racing was found throughout the pack, including the battle for fourth place, which saw reigning Stateline Winner and defending PST Champion Jared Zimbardi hold on for the spot.

Glenn Styres, who won the Original Pizza Logs Four Laps of Fame Dash, knew as soon as that event was over that had gained plenty of knowledge about the track he had never been too before. “The Ohsweken Flyer” would charge up to round out the top five.

Steve Collins was battling with Wickham for the lead early on but the car faded just enough down the stretch, as he would settle for sixth, just ahead of Scott Kreutter , both of whom won their heat race.

Rick Wilson would climb up to eighth in his first race at Stateline since 2005, while George Suprick, who won that race seven years ago, was ninth.

Point leader and four-time PST Champion Bryan Howland had to pull off in his heat race with a fuel filter issue but would transfer through the B-main and drive up to round out the top 10 after his dead-last starting spot.

A total of 25 sprint cars added to an already full pit at Stateline, the best showing by PST at the site of the inaugural series race since 2005. The night starting off sunny and comfortable, but light rain showers would invade the area shortly after 9:00 and put the completion of the event in peril.

Rob Pitcher Picture Perfect For $3,000 Payday!

West Lebanon, NY: The mighty high banks at Lebanon Valley Speedway played host to many legendary drivers throughout is nearly 3 decades of racing history. Maynard Forrette was just one of the legends that were defined as a pioneer of the sport as we know it, but he was also well known for being just Maynard.

A special 30 Lap Modified Feature in his memory brought along a lice payday of a cool $3,000 to the winner. The field of 24 came to the green with the Kingfish, Mike King on the point with veteran racer Rob Pitcher right alongside.

By turn 2, Pitcher gained the advantage, and began to pull away. King’s ride began to fade through the field, but it was clear that Pitcher was gonna have the car to beat. In the middle of the field, the battle was on as Brett Hearn, Donnie Corellis and J.R. Heffner began to battle through the field to make a run at the big money.

Corellis’ #57 slowed by lap 6 with a driveline issue, and Kenny Tremont Jr’s #115 went pitside soon thereafter. Hearn’s #20H and Heffner’s #74 were deep in a heated battle as the #17 of Pitcher stretched out his commanding lead.

Hearn hit the afterburners with just over a handful of laps remaining to get to the runner-up spot, but that was as far as he was gonna get, as Rob Pitcher led wire to wire for the green to checkers win in the Maynard Forrette Memorial, and the $3,000 that went with it!

Hearn crossed the line 2nd followed by Paul Gilardi, Steve Hough and Kyle Armstrong to round out the top 5 finishers.

In the LV Sportsman 20 lap feature event, Sean Mandel’s Ford powered #66 jumped out to the early lead from his front row starting position, and battled veteran racer Frank Harper down the stretch. At the checkers, only 6 inches separated 1st from 2nd, as Mandel held off the hard charging challenges from Harper to score his first career Sportsman win.

Harper settled for 2nd followed by Brett Haas, Chad Pierce and Steve Meilleur to complete the top 5.

In the full fendered Pro Stock 20 lap feature, several cautions slowed the field early. Chuck Towslee kept his #23 at the head of the class and out of trouble early, which set up a second half spectacle that had the fans at the edge of their seats for most of the 2nd half of the race.

Towslee, Paul LaRochelle, Victor Hopkins, Robbie Speed, Chad Jeseo and Jay Corbin ran bumper to bumper, door to door for over a dozen green flag laps for the most exciting battle of the night.

But at the end of it all, Towslee held on for the win over Jeseo, LaRochelle, Speed and Hopkins rounding out the top 5 finishers.

In the Purestocks, Dave Stickles took home the win in PS#1, Scott Morris charged for the win in PS#2, while Al Relyea scored his 3rd win of the season. Steven Loomis won in the Dual Cam 4 Cylinders, while Jim Williams took the win in the Single Cams.

Next Saturday Night is the KeyBank and Anderson Equipment Steve Hough Motors 358 Modifieds along with the full weekly divisions on tap! Patriot Sprint Tour Event at Eriez Falls to Rain

Rich Vleck, HAMMETT , PA , (May 27, 2012)- For the second straight Memorial Day Weekend, the Patriot Sprint Tour scheduled a doubleheader at Stateline and Eriez Speedways. For the second straight year, Stateline’s event was completed, while Eriez was not.

Heavy thunderstorms pounded the grounds of the Eriez Speedway shortly after noon on Sunday, leaving track owners Bobby and Kathy Rohrer no choice but to pull the plug on a Memorial Weekend tradition. Over 20 sprint cars were already in the pits at the 1/3-mile oval, and more were on the way when a second deluge hit just before 3:00 P.M.

The Patriot Sprint Tour will return to the Eriez Speedway later in the season, with the replacement date to be confirmed later this week. Before that point, PST regulars will have a rare mid-season hiatus, with the next sanctioned event Saturday June 16 at Mercer Raceway Park .

Fisher Cats Blast Past B-Mets, 8-2

BINGHAMTON, NY – The New Hampshire Fisher Cats launched three home runs in an eleven-hit attack to defeat the Binghamton Mets 8-2 Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium. All eight runs for the Fisher Cats scored with two outs.

Before the offense erupted for New Hampshire, the B-Mets held an early lead against starter Brett Cecil in the first. Sean Kazmar started the rally with a single to right and took second when Josh Rodriguez walked. Jefry Marte brought Kazmar home by lacing the first pitch he saw into center for an RBI single.

After two rocky outings against the Fisher Cats, B-Mets starter Greg Peavey got off to strong start in his third game against the club. The righty needed just 24 pitches to retire the first nine Fisher Cats to start the game.

The stretch ended in the fourth when Ryan Goins led off the inning with a single. Goins was thrown out at third by catcher Juan Centeno trying to swipe the bag, but Brian Van Kirk kept the inning alive with a two-out double. Mike McDade gave the Fisher Cats the lead for good by launching a two-run homer to right center field.

New Hampshire used another two out rally to add to their lead in the fifth. Brad Glenn and Brian Jeroloman set the table with consecutive two-out singles. Behind in the count 0-2, Ryan Goins ripped a three-run homer to right field. His third homer of the year gave the Fisher Cats a 5-1 advantage.

Peavey (3-2) battled past the two home runs and posted two scoreless innings to cap his night. The righty allowed five runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out three. He matched a season-high with seven innings in the losing effort.

The B-Mets scratched back with a run in the seventh off Cecil. Reese Havens walked to start the inning and scored when Juan Lagares shot a double to the left field alley. Binghamton’s threat was quickly erased when Pedro Zapata lined into a double play to end the inning.

Cecil (3-2) went a season-long seven innings to collect his third win in as many games. The lefty allowed two runs on seven hits and gave way to Danny Farquhar who tossed a perfect eighth inning. After the Fisher Cats put the game out of reach with three runs off Erik Turgeon in the top of the ninth, Farquhar posted a scoreless inning to cap his first save of the season,

The B-Mets (22-25) continue their four-game set against the Fisher Cats tomorrow night at 6:35 PM. LHP Mark Cohoon matches up against RHP Fernando Hernandez. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

Romero’s Drive Sours Series Finale, 6-4

NEW BRITAIN, CT – Deibinson Romero’s two-run homer in the eighth inning broke a tie game and helped lead the New Britain Rock Cats past the Binghamton Mets by a 6-4 score Thursday afternoon at New Britain Stadium. The loss pushed Binghamton a game under .500 and capped a 3-4 roadtrip for the club.

With the game tied at four in the decisive inning, B-Mets pitcher Gonzalez Germen issued a two-out walk to Matt Rizzotti. The righty paid for the free pass as Romero ripped a 3-1 pitch over the left field fence for his fourth home run of the season. The Rock Cats scored five of their six runs in the game with two outs.

In a game that started in the morning, the Rock Cats wasted no time to grab the early lead against B-Mets starter Jenrry Mejia. In his second start of the year with the B-Mets, Mejia allowed a leadoff single to Estarlin De Los Santos. The shortstop stole second and scored on Chris Herrmann’s single to center. Rizzotti kicked the lead to three by hammering a two-run homer to center.

Binghamton got on the board in the third against starter B.J. Hermsen. Pedro Zapata singled to right and put himself in scoring position by swiping second, his team-leading ninth stolen base of the year. He advanced to third on Matt den Dekker’s single and scored on a passed ball by Herrmann.

After the Rock Cats plated a run in the third on an RBI double from Chris Colabello, the B-Mets began to chip away at the deficit. Reese Havens doubled with one out in the fourth and scored on an Eric Campbell’s single to right. They added another run in the fifth on a single by Raul Reyes.

Den Dekker finally erased the deficit in the seventh. The center fielder launched a 1-2 offering from Hermsen over the right field fence to tie the game with his team-leading sixth homer of the season.

The drive took Jenrry Mejia off the hook. The righty allowed four runs on five hits and struck out five over five innings. Germen (1-3) took over in the sixth and tossed two shutout innings before surrendering Romero’s drive in the eighth. He lost his second straight game.

Rock Cats starter Hermsen scattered ten hits in a no-decision. The righty allowed four runs (three earned) and struck out three over seven innings of work. Southpaw Caleb Thielbar (2-0) put up a perfect eighth and closed out the victory with a shutout ninth.

The B-Mets (22-23) head home to start a four-game series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Friday night at 7:05 PM. LHP Darin Gorski takes the mound for Binghamton against RHP Joel Carreno. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

BU lands proven winner, hires Dempsey as men's basketball coach

VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton University has hired Tommy Dempsey as its new head men’s basketball coach, Director of Athletics Patrick Elliott announced on Thursday. Dempsey will be introduced at a press conference at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Events Center TAU Bearcat Room. The event will be streamed live free of charge at www.bubearcats.tv.
The 38-year-old Scranton, Pa. native comes directly from Rider University (N.J.), where he served as head coach for the past seven seasons.

Bringing in an established Division I head coach with notable success is a strong step forward for Binghamton’s athletics program. Dempsey guided the Broncs to national postseason tournaments in three of the last five years and his teams averaged 17 wins per season during his tenure.
Equally important, Dempsey’s student-athletes have a proven track record of academic accomplishment under his leadership. His Rider program has received the NCAA Public Recognition Award four times in the last five years for having an APR score in the top 10 percent in the country, including three perfect scores. Every four-year player in his program has graduated on time and Dempsey has never had a player ruled academically ineligible.
“Tommy Dempsey is a great hire for Binghamton University,” said University President Harvey G. Stenger. “He has a track record of competitive and academic success that will bring energy to our men’s basketball program. I am looking forward to watching the program grow under his guidance.”
In his seven-year tenure, Rider has the third-most total wins of any program in the MAAC (behind only Siena and Fairfield) and has more wins than any program in the Metropolitan area – more than Seton Hall, Hofstra, St. John’s and Princeton among others.

“Tommy’s basketball credentials are impressive to say the least,” said Elliott. “However his demonstrated commitment to academic excellence and student-athlete welfare is equally impressive. As we narrowed our strong candidate pool, Tommy stood out and the more we spoke, it became clear to me that we shared a similar vision for the future of the program. Tommy Dempsey is a great addition to the University, our athletics department and the greater Binghamton community.”

Dempsey, widely considered a talented and charismatic head coach, posted a 119-105 career record at Rider, which competes in the basketball-rich Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
“This is an exciting time to be a part of Binghamton University,” Dempsey said. “I am looking forward to getting on the court with the players this summer and establishing our culture as a program. I am also excited to get on the phone with recruits and their families and let them know that we have a great university and basketball program. I am anxious to get to work.”
Dempsey has established the school record for wins at three different colleges and has been named Coach of the Year four times in nine years as a head coach.

At Rider, Dempsey steered two different teams to 23-win seasons. His 2007-08 squad, led by current NBA player Jason Thompson, captured the MAAC regular season crown and played in the College Basketball Invitational. Thompson, who was recruited by Dempsey, was a lottery pick, taken 12th by the Sacramento Kings in the 2008 NBA Draft.

Dempsey was named the 2008 MAAC Coach of the Year and also was presented with the Peter A. Carlesimo Award as the Division I Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Coach of the Year. His program produced seven all-conference players, including the Player of the Year.
Dempsey’s Broncs won 19 games in 2008-09 and were selected to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. After a 17-win campaign one year later, Rider went 23-11 in 2010-11, knocking off USC and TCU before returning to the postseason. That four-year span (2007-10) resulted in 82 wins – the most in any four-year span in Rider school history.

Prior to taking the reins at Rider, Dempsey was an assistant coach with the Broncs from 2003-05. His recruiting for head coach Don Harnum helped lead to a regular-season MAAC title in 2005 and the foundation for the program’s pending success.

After serving as an interim head coach in 2005-06, Dempsey, the third-youngest Division I head coach in the country at the time, doubled the team’s win total in his first full year as head coach in 2006-07. His 16-win Broncs team reached the MAAC quarterfinals and was the only team (out of eight) in New Jersey to post a winning record.

Prior to his time at Rider, Dempsey took two different schools to the NJCAA Final Four, including a trip to the national championship game in 2003. In three years as head coach at the junior college level, his compiled an 88-12 record, including a perfect 46-0 mark at home. He was twice a finalist for National Coach of the Year honors.

At Lackawanna College, Dempsey took his team to the Division II national championship game in 2003 and was the Region 19 and District 9 Coach of the Year. He inherited a team that wasn’t in the preseason top 40 and finished national runnerup with a school-record 33 wins (33-4).

Dempsey spent two seasons at Keystone College and compiled a 55-8 record. After inheriting an 11-12 team, Dempsey led the 2000-01 squad to 26 wins and a conference title in his first season, earning Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. In 2001-02, Keystone won a school-record 29 games and advanced to the NJCAA Final Four and Dempsey was the Region 19 and District 6 Coach of the Year and a finalist for national coach of the year.
He began his head coaching career at age 24 at Wyoming Preparatory School in 1999. Before that, Dempsey served as an assistant coach for two years at his alma mater, Susquehanna University (1997-99).

As a player, Dempsey was a three-year letterwinner and team captain at Susquehanna before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 1997. He earned his master’s degree in early childhood education from Bloomsburg University in 2005 and was a second grade teacher before turning his attention to coaching.

Tommy and his wife, Amy, have four children: Tommy (12), Emily (10), Brian (5) and Tyler (2).

Patriot Sprint Tour Swings West to Stateline and Eriez for Memorial Weekend Doubleheader

Rich Vleck, ROCHESTER, NY, (May 23, 2012)- In this the 10th season of Patriot Sprint Tour action, the series has its first doubleheader weekend at the first two tracks to ever hold a Patriot race back in 2003.

This Saturday the PST makes their only stop at the Stateline Speedway before travelling down the road to Eriez Speedway for the Sunday Night of Memorial Weekend tradition. This is second year in a row these two events have been paired together for this weekend.

The event on Saturday at Stateline will tie the 1/3-mile oval near Jamestown , NY with Canandaigua Speedway as the third-most visited track in series history. Up until 2010, no driver had ever repeated, but in the last two races, Bryan Howland and Jared Zimbardi , the last two PST Champions, have gone to Victory Lane at Stateline en route to the season title.

The Sunday Night trip to Eriez will be the fifth straight year the series invades the 1/3-mile oval on Memorial Day Weekend. No driver has won multiple PST races at Eriez.

Bryan Howland leads the PST Points after three races. Chuck Hebing is second while Scott Kreutter , a 2011 Eriez winner, is an impressive third in the standings. Meanwhile, Jared Zimbardi stands 10th overall and will look to make a big jump this weekend.

2004 Series Champion George Suprick has won at each track, including at Eriez last year, and will be on hand this weekend. Tim Kelly, who scored his only PST win at Eriez in 2010, was a solid fourth this past weekend and should be stout at well.

Among the drivers that have not won at those tracks but could definitely factor in to the mix includes Don Adamczyk , who has nine straight top-10s at Stateline, a streak that includes five top fives. The “Williamsville Warrior” has only finished outside the top 10 once at Eriez and was fourth in both races last year.

Todd Hoddick is coming off his best career PST finish, while defending Rookie of the Year Steve Collins is always a threat to win. Tommy Wickham will run his first race at Stateline since 2005 but has been a contender all spring, while his cousin Dave Wickham always runs well at each track.

Also expected to factor in to the mix this weekend include Brandan Warner , Bruce DeWick , Clint Ide, Steve Hutchinson Jr., Derek Jonathan, Jay Groves , Gary Edwards and Mitch Brown .
