B-Mets End Homestand with DH Split

160 x 600BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Mets split a doubleheader with the Trenton Thunder on Sunday night at NYSEG Stadium. They were shut out, 1-0 in the first game before winning the nightcap, 6-1 highlighted by a dominating pitching performance from Noah Syndergaard.
Game One
The B-Mets were limited to four hits in the first game of the day, as they were defeated by the Thunder, 1-0. It was the sixth time this season they have been shut out, and the second time in this series.
Carmen Angelini provided the decisive hit in the second inning for the Thunder. After Andrew Clark led off the inning with a double against Logan Verrett, Angelini brought him home with an RBI double into the left-centerfield gap.
On the mound, Verrett threw five innings and only allowed three base hits. The righty stuck out seven and did not walk a single batter, but did not receive any offensive support.
Fred Lewis started for Trenton, and struck out six before leaving the game with an injury after 3.2 innings. Aaron Dott threw four pitches after replacing Lewis, and struck out his only batter to end the fourth inning. David Herndon threw the next two innings on the mound for Trenton. Binghamton threatened against the righthander, but could not crack the scoreboard. In the bottom of the fifth, Casey Stevenson made a diving catch at third base to rob Darrell Ceciliani of a base hit with two men on.
In the seventh, Tommy Kahnle finished the game, and earned his 13th save of the season. He walked Alonzo Harris, but picked him off first base to end the game. Binghamton was held to four hits or less for the fourth straight time in the series. The offense went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position, and never put a runner on third base.
Game Two
Noah Syndergaard and Rhyne Hughes stole the show in the nightcap as the B-Mets beat the Thunder, 6-1. Syndergaard faced one over the minimum through six innings, and Hughes tied a franchise record with three doubles in the victory.
Syndergaard was nothing short of dominant as he led the B-Mets to the win. In six innings pitched the righty threw 59 pitches, and 47 of them for strikes. He reached a two-ball count to only two batters all night, and struck out eight in the process. His only baserunner he allowed was a solo home run given up to Slade Heathcott with two outs in the first inning.
The B-Mets responded to the home run in the second with their first burst of offense on the day. Hughes hit the top of the left field wall for his first double against Zach Nuding, and Travis Taijeron brought him home with an RBI double into the gap. With two outs in the inning, Wilfredo Tovar gave Binghamton their first lead of the day with an RBI single up the middle.
In the third, they tacked on two more runs. Cesar Puello scored Danny Muno with an RBI double down the left field line, and Hughes drove home another with a double up the first base line. The final insurance runs came in the sixth, when Hughes hit his third double of the night to score two runs.
Syndergaard (4-0) lowered his ERA to 2.25 in his outing on the mound. After six innings, he was replaced by Ryan Fraser. Fraser allowed a two-out single, but got Carmen Angelini to fly out to end the game. Nuding (5-11) took the loss after allowing five runs in 4.1 innings.
Binghamton (66-41) has an off day on Monday. They then hit the road for a six-game roadtrip beginning with three in Altoona against the Curve. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 7:00 PM as Binghamton sends LHP Mark Cohoon to the mound against RHP Nick Kingham. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 6:45 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
POSTGAME NOTES: Monday will end a stretch of 21 games in 18 days for the B-Mets…Binghamton is 1-0-5 in doubleheaders this season; in all five splits, they have lost the opener before winning the nightcap…the last B-Met to hit three doubles in one game was Nick Evans vs. Portland on July 27, 2010

Pupello Wins in Exciting Fashion @ LVS

West Lebanon, NY: The mighty high banks at Lebanon Valley Speedway were alive and kickin’ this past Saturday Night as Sheldon Oil Company, Heavy Hauler, VP Race Fuels and Bedell Race Engines presented the night’s dirt racing action to the packed crowd on hand.
Sometimes, the simplest of parts, a $0.60 grade 8 nut, is the difference between winning and losing. That never usually ends well when drivers use that statement, but this week, that was one lucky nut for Matt Pupello.
At the drop of the green for the Big Block Modified 30 lap feature, Brian Berger’s #60 and the #42P of Matt Pupello roared into turn one, side by side. But the #42P got the jump and powered away going down the back stretch.
NASCAR Paint The Track Pink Diecast cars
As the race wore on, and the laps ticked away on the 104.9 The Cat lap Counter, Pupello held strong out front. But back in the pack, Brett Hearn began his journey to the front, along with Andy Bachetti and Donnie Corellis.
With no yellow flags to slow the field and to give everyone a moment to catch their breath, the pressure was on. But, with the laps winding down; Berger made a late race charge as Pupello seemed to be held up by some lap traffic, along with Kyle Sheldon in his #42.
A wisp of smoke began to trail the #42P with 2 laps remaining, and with Berger and Sheldon right on his rear deck lid, Pupello just powered on, and captured the victory in true edge-of- your seat fashion. The smoke, was actually the rear end housing, as only 1 nut remained, holding it all together, and one nut handed Pupello the win, and an extra $3,000.
Berger won the battle and held off Sheldon for 2nd. Sheldon was 3rd, with Brett Hearn charging to 4th followed by Donnie Corellis.
In the Small Block Modified feature, the #66P of Seam Mandell held the lead early; until Steve Hough powered his #34 to the front of the field within a handful of laps, and went on to take the win.
Jason Herrington survived to finish a strong 2nd, followed by a hard charging Brett Haas. Ryan Darcy and Chad Jeseo rounded out the top 5 finishers.
In the Pro Stock feature, Brian Keough was out front early, but a mid-race tangle with a lapped car, took him out of contention, leaving Jay Casey’s #322 to take over the top spot, and power away for the win.
Rick Dempsey held on to finish 2nd, followed by Robbie Speed, Jay Corbin, and Jason Casey to round out the top 5 finishers.
In the Purestock features held earlier in the night, Chris Streeter scored the win in PS#1, Dan Cote won in PS#2, and Ray Hall Sr, went on to win in PS#3.
The 4 cylinders were also on tap, with Todd Goldstein taking the Dual Cam victory, while Brandon Ely won is the Single Cam Class.
Next Saturday Night, it’s Public Safety Night presented by Waste Management and Bulldog Concrete. All Public Safety Officials get in for free in the grandstands, and Budget Sportsman will also be on tap.

Andy Bachetti Dominates Again for 6th Win

NASCAR Paint The Track Pink Diecast cars

West Lebanon, NY: A little natural ‘dust control’ fell very early on at the famed ½ dirt oval known as the Valley of Speed, but that did not deter the true race fans, as the racing was hot and heavy after just a 20 minute delay at the start. NBT Bank and Budweiser presented the action packed Night of Features this past Saturday night.
A couple of dominate drivers have taken over at the high banks as of late, Andy Bachetti in the Big Block Modifieds has been on a tear, taking his #34B to the top spot for a hand full of times so far this year. And in the Pro Stocks, Jay Corbin is matching win for win with Bachetti, driving his #8 to victory lane for the same amount of wins on the year. Do they both double down again this week?

The 104.9 the Cat Lap Counter flashed 30 laps for the Big Block Modifieds as the green flag flew over the #0 of Denny Soltis and the #16 of Kyle Hoffman. This feature was plagued right from the beginning by caution flags as the first come out with just 2 laps in the books.
Hey Canada! Shop the full lineup of Canon consumer products direct! Find Cameras Camcorders Printers and Accessories. Shop now!Soltis held the top spot until lap 8 when the #98 of Eddie Marshal jumped out to the lead, but the cautions flew again, slowing the field. Marshall held strong out front, but all the cautions, just gave Andy Bachetti even more opportunity to get to the front of the field.
By lap 14, the #34B got past Hoffman for 2nd, then just 3 laps later, passed the #98 for the top spot. And that was all she wrote. As the checkers flew, Bachetti put win #6 in the books, hard charging Brett Hearn finished 2nd, followed by Marshall, Hoffman and Kolby Schroder.
The full fendered division, known as the Pro Stocks, took to the high banks for their 20 lap feature event. Early on it was the #311 of Brian Keough holding court out front, but caution slowed this event early and often.
5 more cautions slowed the field before lap 10 was in the books, and that just kept the #8 of Jay Corbin within hunting range, as he powered his way to 2nd by lap 8, then passed the #311 at lap 10.
2 more cautions slowed the field again, but Corbin was too strong and powered away for his 6th win on the year as well. Jason Casey, Paul LaRochelle, Robbie Speed, and Nick Hilt battled it out to round out the top 5 finishers.
The Budget Sportsman feature event was last on the night, with Rob Maxon bringing the field to the green flag. Maxon held strong to the top spot through several early yellow flags, but just past halfway through the 20 lap affair, the #14 of John Virgilio powered on by, and charged out front of the field.
At the checkers, Virgilio scores his first win of 2013, Tommy Johnson came home 2nd, followed by Michael Sabia, Matt Pappa, and Tyler Dippel rounded out the top 5 finishers.
Earlier on the night, the other full fendered series took to the Valley of Speed. In the Purestock features, the winners were: Lou Ganczar in PS#1, Doug Olds in PS#2, and Jeff Meltz in PS#3.
This Sunday, July 21st, the Valley comes alive with the annual return of the STP World of Outlaw Sprint Car Series. CARQUEST will feature the nights affair along with the Small Block Modifieds, and special guest, 3 Time NASCAR Cup Champion Tony Stewart.
Then on Saturday July 27th, Sheldon Oil, Heavy Hauler, and VP Race Fuels present ‘Autograph Night’, along with the Bedell Race Engines $3,000 to Win Big Block Modified Feature plus 4 Cylinders.

Jamie Collard Claims Patriot Sprint Tour Event at Brockville

Rich Vleck, BROCKVILLE , ONTARIO , (July 20, 2013)- Last July, Jamie Collard led wire-to-wire to win at Brockville over Devin Caron and Jared Zimbardi; a year later, the Patriot Sprint Tour event unfolded nearly the same way.
NASCAR Paint The Track Pink Diecast carsCollard, of Burford , Ontario , led all 25 laps of the A-Main of Saturday’s Patriot Sprint Tour/CAOSS Sprint Challenge to claim the $2,000 top prize at the Brockville Ontario Speedway to become the first repeat winner in Patriot Sprint Tour competition this season.

“This feels great,” exclaimed Collard in Victory Lane . “The track was really similar to what we had last year and we were just hooked up.”
It was clear early in the evening that the ¼-mile high-banked oval known as “The Beast of the East” was going to slick off quickly and eventually begin to take rubber. As the 23 cars got ready for the feature, the inclination of abrasion became a reality and forced teams to be cautiously aggressive.
“I was holding back a little bit at the start because I wanted to save the right rear tire because I knew it was going to wear right out,”added Collard.
Collard, who entered the night as the most-recent winner on the Patriot Sprint Tour, finished second in his heat race, which was good enough to get him in the A-main redraw where he was given the pole position. On the initial start, Collard won the drag race into turn one over outside polesitter Jared Zimbardi and then set sail from the field.
Caution flags would appear on lap four and lap six. On the third restart, Michael Parent, who started fourth, moved underneath and Devin Caron for second and began to apply pressure on the leader just before the night’s only red flag on lap eight for a Dale Gosselin flip. Gosselin would walk away from his No. 3 but would be taken to a hospital for precautionary measures.
“I saw the 25 was coming up through but under the red flag Devin Caron came up and told me he had got him on the bottom so I hugged it down there a little bit more,” noted Collard. “My biggest worry was that my right rear was going to blow.”
After the field got back underway, Collard once again stretched out his advantage, but after six laps, he reeled in the back of the field and almost instantly Parent closed to gap. Collard was having a tough time holding Parent back when the yellow flag fell on lap 16 and gave him a chance to breathe.
Shop for official team gear from 2012-13 NFL Playoff bound teamsIn the closing laps, Parent was still giving chase to Collard, but when he attempted to move by a lapped car that had just made his way back in to the racing groove, Parent stabbed the brakes and surprisingly spun around his No. 25 ending his chance at his first PST feature win.
Jared Zimbardi would inherit the runner-up spot back, but could not reel in Collard, as the driver Miles Hill’s No. 7x would capture his fifth win in PST competition. By virtue of his win, Collard is now tied atop the PST Canada Standings.
Zimbardi’s second-place effort might seem unimpressive on paper, but after losing two spots early on with used tires he used a tight setup to reclaim the runner-up spot.
Devin Caron had his best career finish last July at Brockville when he finished second to Collard; the former PST Rookie of the Year was in the position again on Saturday, but would slip back to third in just his second sprint car start of the year.
In the final nine laps of the event, arguably the fastest car on the track was Justin Barger, who was running full-throttle around the track and in doing so drove from 7th up to finish in 4th. Barger is now tied with Collard for the PST Canada point lead.
Steve Poirier started in 11th but was up to fifth by lap eight. Poirier got as high as fourth but would fall back to finish in fifth.
Tommy Wickham would drive up to finish 6th for the fourth time this year, just ahead of Etienne Girard, who won his first career heat earlier in the night and ran up to 7th. Jason Barney entered the night as the PST Canada point leader and despite struggling would cross in eighth. Jeff Cook was the hard-charger on the night driving from 21stup to 9th. Chris Jones won his heat and was inside the top five most of the night but slid back to 10th.
Along with Girard and Jones claiming heat wins, Alain Boisvert captured his first heat win in what was his second start in a sprint car. Boisvert would slide back to 12th in the feature. Mitch Brown was the winner of the Original Pizza Logs Four Laps of Fame.

Mejia, B-Mets Cage Rock Cats, 10-2

NEW BRITAIN, CT – The Binghamton Mets matched a season-high with 15 hits and Jenrry Mejia struck out eight over six innings in a 10-2 victory over the New Britain Rock Cats on Saturday night at New Britain Stadium. Cesar Puello doubled twice and drove in three runs to lead a B-Mets offensive attack that saw every player collect at least one hit.

Galaxy S3 Custom CoversMejia had a two-run cushion before he even threw his first pitch. Danny Muno got the attack against Rock Cats starter Trevor May started immediately by leading off the game with a one-hop double off the right-field wall. Puello brought him home by skipping an RBI single past Eddie Rosario at second base. After swiping second, his 22ndstolen base of the year, Puello scored when Rhyne Hughes blistered a two-out RBI single up the middle.

Binghamton hung another crooked number on the scoreboard in the second. After surrendering a pair of singles, May fired a breaking ball to the backstop that allowed Wilfredo Tovar to score from third. Allan Dykstra lined an RBI single to right, stretching Binghamton’s lead to four.

The B-Mets took advantage of more erratic throwing and sloppy fielding in the third. Following a two-out walk to Xorge Carrillo, center-fielder Danny Ortiz prolonged the inning by dropping a fly ball. May walked Muno and bounced another wild pitch, allowing Carrillo to score.

Mejia set the tone in his second rehab appearance with the B-Mets by retiring the first eight batters he faced. The right-hander side-stepped a bunt single and a walk in a scoreless third and worked around a one-out single in a shutout fourth.
May surrendered a double and struck out two before getting pulled in the middle of the fourth inning, suffering his shortest outing as a Rock Cat. Reliever Bruce Pugh collected the final out of the frame, but struggled to find the strike zone in the fifth. Carrillo blasted a double to left-center and strolled around the bases with Binghamton’s sixth run as Pugh walked three straight batters.

The B-Mets refused to take their foot off the gas pedal against the Rock Cats bullpen. They tacked on two against Jose Gonzalez in the seventh and added two more off Matt Hauser in the ninth.

Nate Hanson put the only blemish on Mejia’s night by ripping a home run over the left-field wall to lead off the fifth inning. Mejia bounced back and retired six of seven to cap his night. Chase Huchingson took over in the seventh and allowed one on three hits over two innings of relief. Chasen Bradford closed the contest with a perfect ninth.

Mejia (2-0) surrendered just one run on three hits over six innings in the victory. May (6-6) was tagged for five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks in the losing effort.
The B-Mets (61-37) conclude their four-game set in New Britain on Sunday night at 6:35 PM. RHP Erik Goeddel takes the mound against LHP Pat Dean. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:20 PM.

POSTGAME NOTES: Mejia’s eight strikeouts were the most in one game since he fanned nine as a Buffalo Bison on 8/30/10 against the Syracuse Chiefs…Darrell Ceciliani extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a single in the second inning…Binghamton sent 50 batters to the plate in nine innings…Binghamton snapped a four-game stretch of having an opponent score first

UAlbany Men's Soccer Adds Four To The 2013 Fall Season

468 x 60

ALBANY, N.Y. - The University at Albany men’s soccer program has unveiled four additions to the 2013 fall season. Head coach Trevor Gorman announced that Bruno Lima (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Anthony Escamilla (Bayport, NY), Leonardo Rodrigues (Sao Paulo, Brazil), and Bernardo De Mattos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) will join the previously announced recruits to form a 10-man class for the fall.

“We’re pleased to be adding these four players to finalize our roster for the fall,” Gorman said. “Each of these individuals brings a lot of positive qualities and I’m confident that their inclusion in our squad will make us stronger.”

The Great Danes begin preseason training in just under a month, and will open the season against Cal St. Northridge on August 30th.

Walks Doom B-Mets in Rubber Match, 6-5

NYYankeesFragrance.com-Sporty Confident Fragrance for Men, Women, Teens and Kids! 160 x 600 bannerBINGHAMTON, NY – Despite turning their first triple-play since May 2007, the Binghamton Mets dropped the rubber match to the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 6-5 Wednesday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. The Squirrels scored three runs without a base hit to break the tie in the sixth inning, as Binghamton walked seven hitters in the loss.

In the decisive sixth inning, Jim Fuller started the frame and could not find the strike zone. The lefty walked the first three batters he faced, and hit the pitcher’s spot to bring home a run to give Richmond a 4-3 lead. Fuller was then replaced by Adam Kolarek with the bases loaded and nobody out. Kolarek recorded consecutive fielder’s choice, but a run scored on each giving Richmond a 6-3 advantage.
The game started on the wrong foot for the B-Mets; Ryan Lollis led off with a solo home run against Noah Syndergaard. In the bottom half of the first, Binghamton began the teter-totter, and plated a run with an RBI single from Rhyne Hughes.
The Flying Squirrels came back with another single run against Syndergaard in the second inning. Pitcher Craig Westcott helped himself out with two outs with an RBI single into right field. The lead didn’t last for long, as Darrell Ceciliani scored Xorge Carrillo with an RBI single up the middle.
For the third straight inning, Syndergaard got into trouble in the third. After a double and an infield single, Mark Minicozzi looked to give Richmond another lead. The threat ended quickly however, as Minicozzi lined out to Wilfredo Tovar at shortstop. The two runners were stealing on the play, and it became a 6-4-4 triple play to end the frame. Binghamton rode the momentum from the historic play in the bottom half of the inning as Cesar Puello led off with an opposite-field solo home run to give the B-Mets a 3-2 lead.
Richmond came back with their second long ball of the day against Syndergaard in the fifth. With one out, Adam Duvall blasted a home run over the centerfield wall which tied the game. Syndergaard was removed from the game after he threw 98 pitches in five innings. He gave up three runs and seven hits, and left in a tied 3-3 game.
That all changed in the sixth, when Fuller couldn’t find his control. Binghamton made a vallient comeback effort with two runs in the seventh inning. A sacrifice fly from Puello and another RBI single from Hughes cut the deficit to one run, but the B-Mets stranded the tying run at second base. Richmond’s Cody Hall slammed the door with a six-out save, and struck out Puello and pinch-hitter Allan Dykstra consecutively in the ninth inning to finish the game.
Fuller (2-1) did not record an out in the sixth inning, and was handed his first loss at the Double-A level. Westcott (4-9) picked up his first win on the mound in his last nine starts. Hall recorded his third save as Binghamton lost their second series loss out of three series.
The B-Mets (59-36) hit the road on Thursday to begin a four-game series against the New Britain Rock Cats. First pitch on Thursday is set for 7:05 PM as Binghamton will send LHP Mark Cohoon to the hill to face RHP Nick Blackburn for New Britain. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show starts at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
POSTGAME NOTES: B-Met manager Pedro Lopez was ejected from the game in the seventh inning by first-base umpire Brian de Brauwere (CC)…Darrell Ceciliani’s RBI single in the second extended his hitting streak to 11 games…Binghamton finished their season series against Richmond with a 3-3 record

Sea Dogs Take 15-Inning Marathon, 8-5

BINGHAMTON, NY – In a game that took over five hours to complete, the Binghamton Mets fell to the Portland Sea Dogs, 8-5 Friday night at NYSEG Stadium.
MizunoUSA.com! Never Settle! Shop Mizuno Team Sports! Baseball, Softball, Vollyball! Free Shipping on Orders of $100 - USE CODE: MIZUNO888!After neither team scored through the first five extra innings, the Sea Dogs scored three unearned runs in the top of the 15th inning to break a 5-5 tie against Chasen Bradford. He had two outs in the frame with runners on first and second base. Garin Cecchini grounded a ball to Josh Rodriguez at third, but his throw to second base sailed wide into the outfield and allowed a run to score. Portland then tacked on when they scored on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Michael Almanzar.

Extra innings were set up by a two-run ninth inning for the B-Mets. The rally began when Wilfredo Tovar hit a ground ball that trickled through the legs of Heiker Meneses at shortstop. Danny Muno followed with a single to right field, and Tovar moved to third base to put runners on the corners. Cesar Puello singled to score Tovar, and Allan Dykstra hit a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield to tie the game at five.
Binghamton scored the first run of the game way back in the first inning against Portland start Keith Couch. After a leadoff double by Muno, Darrell Ceciliani placed a sacrifice bunt down the line to move the runner to third. Cesar Puello followed with an RBI single into left field to give the B-Mets an early 1-0 lead.
Portland responded in a big way in the top of the second against Mark Cohoon.
With one out, Brandon Jacobs doubled, and was the first of four consecutive batters to hit safely in the inning. The frame consisted of four runs and six base hits as Portland took an early 4-1 lead. In the third, the B-Mets cut the lead to one with two runs against Couch. Wilfredo Tovar scored on a balk, and Puello provided his second RBI single to make it a 4-3 game.
That score held until Cohoon allowed an unearned run in the sixth inning. With two outs, a groundball went off the glove of Richard Lucas at third which allowed Meneses to score, making the score 5-3.
Binghamton came back in the ninth with two runs to push the game to extras, but failed to crack the Portland bullpen. Matty Ott retired the first 10 batters he faced in his Double-A career, and threw 4.0 shutout frames to preserve the tie.
For Binghamton Adam Kolarek, Pedro Feliciano, and Chase Huchingson each threw two scoreless inning each after relieving Cohoon in the seventh. Bradford (0-1) suffered the loss on the mound after allowing the three runs in the 15thinning.
Portland used four pitchers in their victory. Keith Couch threw the first six and gave up three runs and eight hits. Bobby Lanigan followed with three innings, and received a blown save in the ninth inning. After Ott threw four innings, position player Ryan Dent threw two scoreless frames to earn the win. He is the second Portland position player in their history to pick up a win on the mound.
The B-Mets (55-34) continue their series against the Sea Dogs (46-44) with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is set for 5:05 PM as LHP Darin Gorski takes the ball for Binghamton against RHP Terry Doyle for Portland. Each of the two games are slated for seven innings. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 4:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
POSTGAME NOTES: This is the longest game for the B-Mets since they played 15 innings on April 9, 2006 vs. Akron…Joe Bonfe is the first position player since Jose Coronado pitched on June 30, 2011…The game was the first time Binghamton has played longer than 10 innings this season

Super DIRTcar Series Driver Hearn Wins Big at The Big Show 5

Wal-Mart.com USA, LLC

MALTA, N. Y. - Wednesday, July 10, 2013 - Super DIRTcar Series driver and race promoter Brett Hearn has been known to bring crowds in packed grandstands to their feet, but this time he really outdid himself. After a three-wide pass for second, a thrilling battle with Gary Tomkins for the lead, and fending off late-race challenges from Billy Dunn, Hearn went for the win Tuesday, July 9, at Albany-Saratoga Speedway for the race he promotes, The Big Show 5 presented by Recovery Sports Grill Malta.

"I don't think we could ask for a better race track, a better show," said Hearn, celebrating his first-ever win at The Big Show. "There was some heavy-duty racing there."

Hearn, of Sussex, N. J., started ninth in the field and cracked the top five after a lap-28 restart presented an opportunity to make a move. Gary Tomkins, Clifton Springs, N. Y., was in the lead after taking the top spot from Dale Planck, Cortland, N. Y., in lap 10.

Then in third, Hearn faced another yellow flag in lap 31 and a restart in lap 34. Planck found momentum off the restart and challenged Tomkins, racing side-by-side for almost two laps. Tomkins kept his advantage, but Hearn faltered when Billy Decker, of Sidney, N. Y., pulled up beside him on the inside in lap 38.

Hearn briefly fell behind to fourth, but Decker's challenge was a wake-up call. in lap 39, he found speed on the outside, and passed Planck for the second spot.

"The Natural" Planck was driving the fast No. 7z, and wasn't giving up without a fight. He took the second spot back in lap 41, only to lose it again to Hearn, who was finding speed on the outside, in lap 43. However, Hearn jumped up too high on the cushion in lap 44, allowing Planck to get by.

The leaders battled through lapped traffic soon after the halfway point, Tomkins, Planck and Hearn darting around cars while trying to keep their spots or challenge for a better one. Hearn lost his third place position to Decker in lap 58, and Tomkins almost lost the lead to Planck in lap 59 but fended off his challenges.

Decker's ground gained was a wake-up call to Hearn, who, in lap 60, gained momentum off the topside and passed both Decker and Planck in one fell swoop to pit up the second spot.
With just Tomkins and 40 laps standing between himself and victory, Hearn charged forward on the inside to challenge for the lead. Tomkins had more speed on the straightaways and was able to stay ahead, so Hearn tried again on the outside and finally took over the race in lap 69.
However, with 30 laps to go, the race was far from over. After starting 14th, Billy Dunn was having an impressive run and was in third when Hearn took the lead. By lap 80, Dunn had claimed second after passing Tomkins and by lap 84, he gained enough momentum to challenge Hearn.

The yellow flag waved in lap 85, bringing the field back together after nearly 50 caution-free laps. On the restart, Hearn kept his lead, Dunn keeping up but unable to challenge again after losing momentum. Hearn took the win in the 100-lapper with Dunn in second.
"We were patient the first 15 or 20 laps, and then really found our groove in the next 40 or 50. We started working on the bottom and picking cars off in traffic," said Dunn, of Watertown, N. Y. "I didn't really need that last caution. I think he was coming to me a little bit in traffic."
Dunn's charge did not go unnoticed from the front, where Hearn quickly realized he may be in trouble when the Number One Speed Shop No. 49 started gaining on him.
"It threw a little scare into me. He beat through the pack, and he was now in second," Hearn said. "I started to wonder if I had enough to hold him off because I knew he had started outside of the top 12."
Hearn, steering his Madsen Overhead Doors No. 20 around the 4/10 mile oval at Albany-Saratoga Speedway, was able to hold of Dunn to win the $9,711 prize.
"It was a fantastic race," Hearn said. "The track was wide and racey. You could go top to bottom the entire race."

After leading early in the race, Tomkins finished third. Decker was fourth at the checkered and Planck fifth. Rounding out the top ten are Marc Johnson in sixth, defending event champion Bobby Varin in seventh, Justin Haers in eighth, three-time defending Super DIRTcar Series Champion Matt Sheppard in ninth, and Jimmy Phelps in tenth.
With several successful years under his belt, and now even a win at his own race, Hearn is looking forward to continuing to promote The Big Show.

"We're trying to build an event here that people start talking about in January and mark it on their calendars," said Hearn, noting the event's growth, including a 20-percent increase in car count this year. "Everybody has a good time, and it's a great place to have an event like this, and there are a lot of sponsors in this area that want to be part of this."

Sponsor participation from Recovery Sports Grill Malta, Sowle's Trailer Repairs, Ferris Commergial Mowers, VP Racing Fuels, PRO FABrication, Dover Brake, and Morris Ford made it possible for Brett Hearn's The Big Show 5 to offer a Super DIRTcar Series winner's share of $9,711 as well as additional prize money for heat winners and the Dash for Cash winner.

The Morris Ford Dash for Cash went to Sheppard. Matt DeLorenzo drew the pole and took the lead at the green flag, and from the first lap Stewart Friesen challenged him from the outside. However, Stewart started to slow a couple laps later, and Sheppard snuck between the No. 1wgc and the No. 115 of Kenny Tremont to take second in lap 4. Sheppard found the outside groove and chased down DeLorenzo, going wide on turn 4 of lap 6 to take him and claim the lead by lap 7.

The Super DIRTcar Big-Block Modified Series continues later this month with back-to-back races in Quebec, Canada. The premier Big-Block Modified tour invades Autodrome Drummond Monday, July 22, then travels to Autodrome Granby Tuesday, July 23.

B-Mets Come Back From Break with Two Wins

BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Mets came back from the All-Star Break by picking up two victories over the Portland Sea Dogs on Thursday night at NYSEG Stadium. The first was resumed from a suspended game from June 25 in Portland, and the B-Mets won, 6-5. Binghamton then won the seven-inning nightcap, 4-0.
Resumed Game
Auto Parts WarehouseThe B-Mets and Sea Dogs picked things up in the top of the third inning with no score, and Binghamton acting as the visiting team. The score remained scoreless until Allan Dykstra blasted a two-run shot over the right field wall in the fourth inning to put Binghamton on top, 2-0.
Cory Mazzoni started the resumed game for the B-Mets, but exited after 1.1 innings. With a 3-2 count on Garin Cecchini, Mazzoni was removed from the game with a lower body injury. Jim Fuller took over with one out in the fourth and gave up an RBI single to Travis Shaw making it a 2-1 game.
In the fifth, the offense built the lead back up with RBI singles by Danny Muno and Josh Rodriguez. In the frame, they scored two runs on four hits against Chris Balcom-Miller. The final B-Met scoring came in the top of the seventh inning against Noe Ramirez. Cesar Puello singled home Wilfredo Tovar and Richard Lucas hit a sacrifice fly to give Binghamton a 6-1 lead.
In the bottom half however, Portland built an impressive comeback. After three runs scored against Fuller in the inning, he was yanked for Chasen Bradford who made his Double-A debut. He was welcomed to the league with back-to-back RBI doubles by Shannon Wilkerson and Tony Thomas, as Portland pulled within one run at 6-5. He escaped the jam by striking out Cecchini to hold the lead.
Bradford settled down and tossed a scoreless eighth inning, and closer Jeff Walters threw a perfect 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his 23rd save of the season.
Game Two
A combination of good pitching and collective hitting led Binghamton to a 4-0 win over the Sea Dogs in the nightcap. Noah Syndergaard started the game, and only allowed one hit in his two innings of work. He was limited to two innings as he prepares to throw in the 2013 Futures All-Star Game at Citi Field on Sunday.
The offense got going immediately behind Syndergaard. Against Portland pitcher Mike McCarthy, Cesar Puello hit an RBI single into left field to put Binghamton up, 1-0. The hit was the third consecutive single to start the game for the B-Mets.
They continued to record base hits against McCarthy, but couldn’t find the scoreboard again until the fifth. The inning nearly mimicked the first inning for the B-Mets. Once again Muno, Rodriguez, and Puello each singled to begin the inning. Puello’s single brought home Muno to give Binghamton a 2-0 lead.
Meanwhile on the mound, Ryan Fraser tossed three scoreless frames after relieving Syndergaard. The righty allowed three singles over three innings and picked up his first Double-A win of the season.
Binghamton wrapped up their scoring in the bottom of the sixth. Muno hit a sacrifice fly to score Darrell Ceciliani, and Rodriguez followed with an RBI single to score Xorge Carrillo.
Both Chase Huchingson and Scott Atchison each threw a perfect inning of relief to seal the victory for the B-Mets. Fraser (1-1) earned the win and McCarthy (0-2) was tagged with the loss.
The B-Mets (55-33) and Sea Dogs (45-44) continue their series on Friday night at NYSEG Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM as LHP Mark Cohoon takes the mound against RHP Keith Couch for Portland. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show starts at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
