Iati's Career Game Lifts UAlbany Over UMKC, 62-59

UNCASVILLE, Conn. - Fifth-year senior Jacob Iati scored a career-high 24 points to lift UAlbany over UMKC, 62-59, on Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Iati, in the final three minutes of play, hit all nine of his free throws to solidify the Great Danes third win of the season.

Along with Iati's career-high 24 points, senior guard Mike Black racked up 16 points, 10 of which came on the charity stripe. Sophomore forward Sam Rowley complimented both guards with seven points and seven rebounds.
The Great Danes held a slight edge in rebounding, 31-30, and hit 23 of 30 free throws. UAlbany out shot UMKC on the floor, 40.5 percent (17-42) to 34.6 percent (18-52).


UMKC (1-2) had three players in double figures. Estan Tyler led all Kangaroos in scoring with 17 points and six assists. Kirk Korver and Nat Rogers each scored in double digits with 16 and 10, respectively.


With five minutes left in the second half, UAlbany (3-1) held its largest lead of the half at 11, 51-40. Black hit two of his game-high 10 free throws to cap the lead.

The Kangaroos, however, fought down to the last seconds of the game. Rogers began an 11-4 UMKC run with a deep three at the top of the key. Roos' center Fred Chatmon finished the run with a wide-open dunk to cut the lead to two, 55-53, with 45 seconds remaining in the game.

The game would come down to UMKC's Tyler and UAlbany's Iati. In the final 36 seconds of game, both players would score the game's final 13 points. Each player would alternate points, but Iati iced the game with his final two free throws with four seconds remaining for the Great Danes third victory on the season.

A slow first half for the Great Danes, as the Kangaroos held their highest lead of the game of four, 25-21, with 3:41 left in the first half. UMKC's Tyler and Rogers paced the team with a combined 15 points, shooting 3-of-6 from behind the arc.
UMKC held UAlbany to a three-point at the half, 26-23. The Roos out rebounded the Great Danes, 19-13, while the Danes out shot their opponents, 33.3 percent (7-21) to 32.1 percent (9-28).

UAlbany will face Loyola (Md.) in the Springfield bracket championship of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 18 at Mohegan Sun Arena. Tip-off scheduled for 2 p.m.
