BALTIMORE – The Orange men’s
lacrosse team will play St. John’s in the 2013 Whitman’s Sampler Independence
Classic, a brand new event organized by Inside Lacrosse. The lineup for
the inaugural tripleheader, scheduled for Saturday, March 9 at PPL Park in
Chester, Pa., was announced today by the magazine.
The Orange and Red Storm square off at noon in
the opening game. Penn and Villanova follow at 2:30 p.m., and Penn State faces
Lehigh at 5 p.m. in the nightcap.
The Orange is 6-0 all-time against St. John’s,
including a 9-8 regular-season victory in Queens last season, and a 12-4 triumph
in the finals of the 2012 BIG EAST Men’s Lacrosse Championship.
Located on the Delaware River, PPL Park is the
home of Major League Soccer’s (MLS) Philadelphia Union. The facility also served
as the host for last year’s NCAA quarterfinals, and most recently, hosted the
2012 BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship.
The Independence Classic is one of two
regular-season college lacrosse showcases Syracuse will participate in this
season. The Orange is also slated to face Notre Dame in the 2013 Konica Minolta
Big City Classic at MetLife Stadium on Saturday, April 27.
Syracuse has played in at least one Inside
Lacrosse event since the magazine began arranging them in 2007. Over the
years the Orange has taken part in the Face-Off Classic (2007-08, 2011), the Big
City Classic (2009-13), and now the Independence Classic.
