Men's Basketball Loses Heartbreaker To Loyola (Md.), 67-64

UNCASVILLE, Conn. - A late three-pointer by fifth-year senior guard Jacob Iati was not enough, as UAlbany fell to Loyola (Md.), 67-64, on Sunday, Nov. 18 at the Mohegan Sun Arena. The Great Danes finish up their five-game road trip on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at South Carolina State.

UAlbany (3-2) had four players in double digits and of its 64 total points, 27 came from the bench. Senior center Blake Metcalf led the Great Danes with 12 points and eight rebounds. Iati, sophomore guard Peter Hooley, and junior guard D.J Evans all scored in double figures with 11, 11, and 10, respectively.

Loyola's (4-1) forward Erik Etherly had a game-high 23 points and seven rebounds. Guards Dylon Cormier and Anthony Winbush were in double-digit figures with 16 and 12 points.

After two made free throws by Anthony Winbush, UAlbany fell down by 13, 58-45, with 10:16 remaining in the game.

Then the Great Danes would begin their 14-4 run to cut the deficit to three, 62-59, with 1:29 remaining.
Back-to-back three's by Great Danes Jayson Guerrier and Iati helped push the run. Metcalf capped off the run with a dunk that was assisted by Hooley. Following two Loyola free-throws to put the deficit to five, 64-59, Hooley cut into the Greyhound defense with a runner. Hooley's two made the deficit just three, 64-61, with 46 seconds remaining in the game.

With a turnover by Loyola's Etherly, UAlbany pushed the ball towards its offensive end. As the shot clock was down to five seconds, Iati heaved a three-pointer from about 27 feet and hit nothing but the bottom of the net to tie the game at 64 with three seconds remaining.

Then Loyola threw up a hail mary off the UAlbany offensive out-of-bounds area and found the hands of Cormier. Cormier received the pass inside the paint and made the layup and was fouled with 1.3 seconds remaining. The Greyhound guard made the free throw to defeat the Great Danes by three.

UAlbany opened the first half very slow, having fallen behind by 18 early. Seven first half turnovers in the first 10 minutes put Loyola up 28-10 with 10:50 remaining in the first.

The Great Danes used a 17-9 run in a seven-minute span to cut the deficit to 10, 37-27, with 3:34 remaining. Evans and Hooley combined for nine of the 17 points during the run. A layup by Sam Rowley ended the half with UAlbany down just 10, 41-31.
