THE UALBANY-DUQUESNE SERIES
UAlbany leads the all-time series 5-1. The series dates back to the ECAC Division I-AA Football Classic in 2002, before Duquesne became an associate member of the NEC in 2008. The Great Danes won that first meeting, 24-0, in Albany. From there, UAlbany won the next two clashes, 33-23, in 2008 and 55-10 in 2009. Duquesne captured its lone win of the series in 2010 in Pittsburgh by a score of 28-17. In the last two years, UAlbany put up 38 points in both clashes, winning by scores of 38-10 at home in 2011, and 38-31 on the road in 2012.
LAST TIME VS. THE DUKES
In a game divided, UAlbany overcame the hosting Duquesne University Dukes, 38-31, at Rooney Field on Nov. 10, 2012. The Great Danes came out with a vengeance in the opening half, taking a 35-7 lead at the break, but the Dukes came storming back, scoring the first 17 points of the second stanza. By halftime, the Great Danes had five touchdowns to their name, credited to five different players. UAlbany finished the game with 439 yards of total offense and 24 first downs. Drew Smith led the Great Danes’ running game with 143 yards on 25 carries, and totaled 164 all-purpose yards, including two catches. Omar Osbourne also crossed the goal line and rushed 80 yards, while finishing with 102 all-purpose yards. Likewise, Kevin Chillis was credited a touchdown, accumulating 64 rushing yards in the win. Will Fiacchi completed 14-of-22 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown. Cole King was his top receiver with three catches, including one for a score, and 54 receiving yards. Defensively, Chris Wilk led the squad with seven unassisted tackles and a sack, while Jon Morgan dropped five, snagged an interception, and blocked a punt. Senior Dean Mercuris also had a solid game with five tackles, a sack, a pass break up, and two quarterback hurries.
SCOUTING THE GREAT DANES
2013 Record: 0-0, 0-0 CAA
2012 Record: 9-2, 7-1 NEC (T-1st)
2013 CAA Preseason Poll: 10th/11
Head Coach: Bob Ford (41st varsity season at UAlbany/44th overall at UAlbany/45th overall as head coach) (255-159-0 / 264-180-1 / 0-0 CAA)
THE COACH: Bob Ford ranks first among active NCAA Division I FCS coaches with 264 career victories and is also fourth on the all-time FCS chart. Ford, the architect of the UAlbany program, has led the Great Danes to a 255-159 record entering his 41st varsity season. Under his direction, the Great Danes have moved from the club level in 1970 to its present NCAA Division I FCS status. At the team’s media day on Aug. 13th, Ford announced that his 44th season at the helm in 2013 will be his last. More than 100 of Bob Ford’s assistant coaches are currently working in the professional, college and high school ranks.
THE OFFENSE
While UAlbany loses eight all-conference players, there are plenty of strong pieces returning, including a solid offensive contingent. Quarterback Will Fiacchi returns after an impressive redshirt sophomore campaign in 2012, starting all 11 games and accumulating 2,156 passing yards. The Great Danes will have added depth at the quarterback position this fall with Guilderland native Ryan Smith. Running back Omar Osbourne will look to fill the shoes of Drew Smith, who rewrote the UAlbany record book last season. While Smith often powered his way up the middle, Osbourne (2012: 503 yrds-108 carries-5 TDs) is best at catching the screen pass and weaving his way through traffic with a good deal of acceleration. The Great Danes will also have a number of experienced linemen protecting the pocket in Kadeem Williams, Eric LaPorta, and Adam Pasnik, as well as a deep selection of outstanding receivers down field -- Cole King, Kevin Chillis, and Jameel Gay. The Danes will also look to tight end Brian Parker and fullbacks Pat O’Connor and Nic Ketter as other options for first downs.
THE DEFENSE
Defensively, UAlbany will have the task of replacing four solid linebackers in Chris Wilk, Dave Plungas, Jon Morgan, and Chris Bouchard. The Great Danes will look to Christian Dorsey and Jake Dwyer to step up, while Kyle Jordan (2012: 45 tackles, 5 pbu) and Alex Helmer (2012: 36 tackles, 1 sack) return after playing a majority of the snaps at the outside linebacker position. Defensive end Andrew Smith (28 tackles) and defensive tackle Tim Kologrivov (24 tackles) will serve as the group’s veterans on the line, while seniors Tramaine Wilson (11 tackles, 3 interceptions) and Randall Extantus (40 tackles, 6 pbu) will look to be a presence at the safety and cornerback positions, respectively. In 2012, UAlbany’s rushing defense ranked first in the NEC and 14th in the nation (117.91 yrds/game), second in the league in scoring defense (22.73 pts/game), and third in total defense (340.45 yrds/game).
THE SPECIALISTS
With the graduation of kicker Sean Kenny and punter Paul Layton, who is currently first on Temple’s 2-deep as a graduate student, the Great Danes will look to fill the void with fresh faces. Jonathan Martin, a redshirt freshman from Delmar, N.Y. is slated to take over punting duties, while redshirt sophomore Tom O’Riordan has been the most accurate as a place kicker throughout preseason camp.
SCOUTING THE DUKES
2013 Record: 0-0, 0-0 NEC
2012 Record: 5-6, 3-5 NEC (6th)
2013 NEC Preseason Poll: 2nd
Head Coach: Jerry Schmitt (9th season at Duquesne/14th overall) (47-35 / 75-56)
THE COACH: Jerry Schmitt is in his ninth season as Duquesne’s head coach. An assistant from 1985-87 and again from 1992-99 for the Dukes, Schmitt spent five years as head coach at his alma mater, Westminster College, in New Wilmington, Pa., before returning to put his mark on the program. He led the Dukes to three consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Football League championships and earned MAAC Coach of the Year two times in his first three seasons as head coach. In 2011, Schmitt continued Duquesne’s transition as a scholarship-granting associate member of the Northeast Conference by guiding the Dukes to a 9-2 record and NEC Co-Championship (with UAlbany) with a 7-1 record.
OVERVIEW: After ending 2012 in sixth place in the NEC with a 5-6 overall record and 3-5 league mark, Duquesne was picked to finish second in the 2013 NEC Preseason Coaches Poll. The Dukes return 13 starters, including seven on offense and six on defense. Senior linebacker Dorian Bell, who has racked up the preseason honors, including being named to the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List, Senior Bowl Watch List, Sports Network Preseason
First Team All-America, and Preseason All-NEC Team, leads the squad’s defense. Offensively, Duquesne will have to fill the void of Larry McCoy, the program’s all-time leading rusher, as well as three-year starting quarterback Sean Patterson. They will look to junior Ryan Ho (45-184-1) to carry the ball against UAlbany. At quarterback, the Dukes are expected to start redshirt freshman Dillon Buechel.
THE ROLE OF THE UNDERDOG
Entering their first season in the CAA, the Great Danes plan to embrace the role of the underdog. UAlbany, who had 35 scholarships as a member of the NEC, has moved up to 54 scholarships for the 2013 season. While it is more, it is still well under the 63 limit that a majority of the CAA programs are at. UAlbany looks to average 57 scholarships across the next two seasons in order to play an FBS opponent in 2015 and have that game count in the opposition’s bowl eligibility.
BACK-TO-BACK AT ROONEY
For just the second time in program history, the Great Danes will play the same team in back-to-back road games. The Great Danes closed their road schedule against the Dukes at Rooney Field on Nov. 10th last season with a 38-31 victory, and now will open the 2013 campaign at the same location. The only other time this happened was with American International in the Division II era. The Danes topped the Yellow Jackets in the Eastern Football Conference championship, 27-20, on Nov. 22, 1997. UAlbany then opened their ‘98 road slate at American International in Springfield, Mass. with a 38-26 win on Sept. 12, 1998.
AUGUST FOOTBALL
This season’s Aug. 31st opening day marks just the second time in program history that Week 1’s game has landed in August. The only other time was in 2008 when the Great Danes fell to Massachusetts, 28-16, on Aug. 30th.
FULL SEAWOLF CIRCLE
The UAlbany football program played its very first varsity game against rival Stony Brook on Sept. 22, 1973. With Coach Ford on the sideline, the Great Danes trounced the Seawolves, 69-6, at University Field, marking Ford’s first of 255 varsity victories. Announcing his retirement following this season, Ford has an opportunity to make Stony Brook his last career win. UAlbany travels to take on the Seawolves in the 2013 season-finale on Nov. 23rd.
DANES PICKED 10th IN CAA PRESEASON POLL
At the conference media day in Baltimore, the CAA announced the preseason all-conference teams and the predicted order of finish. The Great Danes were picked 10th in the preseason poll, while Villanova was chosen as the league’s preseason favorite in a vote of the conference’s 11 head coaches and communications personnel. UAlbany did not have anyone named to the preseason all-conference team.

1974 TEAM TO BE INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME
The 1974 UAlbany football team has been selected to be inducted into the University at Albany Athletics Hall of Fame. The ’74 team is the only squad in program history with an undefeated record, going 9-0. Current UAlbany linebackers coach Don Mion was a member of that team and set the record for tackles in a single game during that year. He recorded 24 tackles against Alfred on Sept. 28, 1974. The ’74 team will be inducted
