The B-Mets set a franchise record with their 83rd win of the season and Jeff Walters notched his 37th save, setting a new career B-Mets franchise mark.
The Baysox chipped away to get on the board in the first inning. Kyle Hudson led off the frame with a single off Logan Verrett, took second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a single and scored on another wild pitch. After allowing two singles, issuing one walk and uncorking two errant pitches, Verrett limited the damage to one run by retiring the final two batters of the inning, stranding two aboard.
Binghamton came through with an overdue offensive attack in the second against Bowie starter Tyler Wilson. Cory Vaughn started the inning by launching his tenth home run of the season over the left-field wall. Vaughn’s blast ended a five-game team home run drought. Following a single by Travis Taijeron and a double by Blake Forsythe, Richard Lucas gave Binghamton their first lead since Saturday with a sac fly to right. Wilfredo Tovar threaded a double down the third base line to plate Forsythe with Binghamton’s third run of the inning. Verrett settled in after the first and ended his night with four scoreless innings. The right-hander allowed six hits and walked one over five innings, but held the Baysox to a 1-for-8 mark with runners in scoring position, stranding six runners along the way. Wilson bounced back with three scoreless frames and was pulled with one out in the sixth.
Reliever Chris Petrini racked up a strikeout before surrendering a single to Wilfredo Tovar. Danny Muno followed with a single to left, but the B-Mets were kept off the board as Garabez Rosa nabbed Taijeron at the plate to end the inning.
Chasen Bradford worked around a one-out single to put up a zero in the sixth, but ran into trouble in the seventh. Rosa launched an 0-1 pitch over the left-field wall to cut Binghamton’s lead to one. Two batters later, Josh Horton laced a single to center, putting the potential tying run on base.
Adam Kolarek got the call from the bullpen and induced Britton to bounce back to the mound to end the threat. The Maryland native returned for the eighth and used a double play to erase a leadoff single in a scoreless frame.
Walters took control of the one-run game in the ninth and steered it to the finish line, posting a perfect ninth inning. Verrett (12-6) took the sole possession of the league lead with his 12th win of the season. Wilson (7-4) suffered his third straight loss. The B-Mets (83-53) continue their four-game series against the Baysox on Wednesday night at 7:05 PM. LHP Mark Cohoon takes the mound against RHP Mike Wright.
