Ty Thompson Records Hat Trick to Lead UAlbany Men's Lacrosse to 12-11 Win Over

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Ty Thompson scored three goals and added an assist, while Lyle Thompson recorded four helpers to lead UAlbany to a 12-11 win over Canisius in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Demske Sports Complex. The Great Danes improve to 3-2 on the season, while Canisius falls to 0-4.

UAlbany scored first, as Tim Cox took an assist from Lyle Thompson on a man-up opportunity just two minutes into play. Tim Edwards, who led all players with five goals, scored his first of the day at 11:57 to tie the game for the first time. Will Fuller put the Great Danes up to end the first quarter, getting a helper from Ty Thompson at 7:25.

Canisius won the ensuing faceoff and scored just ten seconds later, the first of three straight goals that put the Golden Griffs up, 5-3, heading into halftime.

The Great Danes regrouped at the half, and scored twice to start the third quarter to tie the game at 5-5. Fuller took an assist from Lyle Thompson two minutes into the period before Will Stenberg recorded an unassisted tally at 11:51. However, Canisius followed with two straight goals from Vince Gavino and Brandon Bull to regain a two-goal advantage with just over ten minutes left in the quarter. A man-up goal by Ty Thompson at 8:42 sparked the Great Danes into action, as they rattled off five straight tallies to end the third and start the fourth. Ty scored again at 3:26 of the third to tie the score at 7-7, while Feuerstein and John Maloney ended the half with back-to-back goals.

Edwards completed a hat trick with a goal at 9:11, pulling the Golden Griffs back to within one, but UAlbany was on a roll. Stenberg scored an unassisted tally at 7:18, pushing the Great Danes to an 11-9 lead. Edwards notched his fourth goal at 4:48, but Ty Thompson responded with an unassisted shot to keep UAlbany ahead. Edwards closed out the scoring to close the gap to one goal, but it was too late, and the Great Danes held on for the 12-11 victory.

"I am very pleased with how we handled adversity in the first half and came out in responded in the second," said UAlbany head coach Scott Marr, whose team was receiving votes in the most recent national polls. "We fought hard and earned a solid road win."

UAlbany outshot Canisius, 42-34, but the Golden Griffs held a 40-32 advantage in ground balls. The Great Danes struggled in the face off circle against Canisius, as the Golden Griffs won 22-of-27, led by Joe Rautenstrauch with 20 wins. UAlbany goalkeeper Blaze Riorden played all 60 minutes in net for the Great Danes, making eight saves. Nick Carrasco took the loss for Canisius, but made 16 saves between the pipes.

UAlbany will return to action next Saturday at Bryant, with a 1 p.m. face off.
