BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Ty Thompson
scored three goals and added an assist, while Lyle Thompson recorded four
helpers to lead UAlbany to a 12-11 win over Canisius in non-conference men's
lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Demske Sports Complex. The Great Danes
improve to 3-2 on the season, while Canisius falls to 0-4.
UAlbany scored first, as Tim Cox took an assist from
Lyle Thompson on a man-up opportunity just two minutes into play. Tim Edwards,
who led all players with five goals, scored his first of the day at 11:57 to tie
the game for the first time. Will Fuller put the Great Danes up to end the first
quarter, getting a helper from Ty Thompson at 7:25.
Austin Romantic tied the game for a second time with
an unassisted shot at 11:03 of the second quarter, before Ryan Feuerstein put
UAlbany back on top, 3-2, at 7:43. Canisius won the ensuing faceoff and scored
just ten seconds later, the first of three straight goals that put the Golden
Griffs up, 5-3, heading into halftime.
The Great Danes regrouped at the half, and scored
twice to start the third quarter to tie the game at 5-5. Fuller took an assist
from Lyle Thompson two minutes into the period before Will Stenberg recorded an
unassisted tally at 11:51. However, Canisius followed with two straight goals
from Vince Gavino and Brandon Bull to regain a two-goal advantage with just over
ten minutes left in the quarter. A man-up goal by Ty Thompson at 8:42 sparked
the Great Danes into action, as they rattled off five straight tallies to end
the third and start the fourth. Ty scored again at 3:26 of the third to tie the
score at 7-7, while Feuerstein and John Maloney ended the half with back-to-back
goals.

Maloney, who cracked the starting lineup earlier in
the week, added his second of the day to start the fourth before Canisius ended
the UAlbany rally with a goal by Cody Soberanes at 10:14. Edwards completed a
hat trick with a goal at 9:11, pulling the Golden Griffs back to within one, but
UAlbany was on a roll. Stenberg scored an unassisted tally at 7:18, pushing the
Great Danes to an 11-9 lead. Edwards notched his fourth goal at 4:48, but Ty
Thompson responded with an unassisted shot to keep UAlbany ahead. Edwards closed
out the scoring to close the gap to one goal, but it was too late, and the Great
Danes held on for the 12-11 victory.
"I am very
pleased with how we handled adversity in the first half and came out in
responded in the second," said UAlbany head coach Scott Marr, whose team was
receiving votes in the most recent national polls. "We fought hard and earned a
solid road win."
UAlbany outshot Canisius, 42-34, but the Golden
Griffs held a 40-32 advantage in ground balls. The Great Danes struggled in the
face off circle against Canisius, as the Golden Griffs won 22-of-27, led by Joe
Rautenstrauch with 20 wins. UAlbany goalkeeper Blaze Riorden played all 60
minutes in net for the Great Danes, making eight saves. Nick Carrasco took the
loss for Canisius, but made 16 saves between the pipes.
UAlbany will return to action next Saturday at
