seven of its last eight, the University at Albany (8-3, 2-0 America East) hits
the road for three of the final four games, beginning with Vermont (3-8, 0-2
America East) on Saturday, April 13 at Virtue Field. Game is slated for 1
p.m.
SCOUTING THE CATAMOUNTS• Attackmen
Drew Philie and Graham Horvath have been the focal points of the offense this
season, combining for 47 goals in 11 games. Philie has tallied four goals in the
past two contests against UAlbany, including a hat-trick performance in UVM’s
lone win in the past 11 contests.• Between
the pipes, freshman goalie Justin Rosenberg has started in nine of 11 games.
Rosenberg is holding opponents to 10.83 goals per game. The freshman’s .508 save
percentage is second best in the conference.
LAST MEETING•
UAlbany and Vermont last met 364 days ago. The Great Danes and
Catamounts were tied, 6-6, at the half. UVM used a six-goal second quarter, five
of which were consecutive to end the half.• However,
UAlbany held Vermont to a single goal in the final 30 minutes while rattling of
six of its own to improve to 3-0 in conference play.• The
Thompson Trio combined for seven goals and two assists. Miles and Ty each had
hat tricks in the contest.
SERIES HISTORY• This is the 14th meeting
in series history for UAlbany and Vermont.• UAlbany
owns the all-time series at 10-3.

Danes are 10-0 against the Catamounts when the defense allows nine goals or

WEEK• A Friday
night ESPNU contest shed light to the most potent offense in men’s lacrosse. The
Great Danes, who are leading the nation in scoring offense, went into Homewood
Field and defeated No. 20 Johns Hopkins, 10-9.• Freshman
goalie Blaze Riorden recorded a career-best 20 saves
against the Blue Jays. Junior attack Miles Thompson tallied five points on three goals
and two assists.• On Sunday,
UAlbany presented itself as “The Greatest Show On Turf” against Hartford,
scoring 24 goals with 10 different goal scorers.• Lyle Thompson, who was held pointless, lit up the
Hawks with seven points on four goals and three assists.
CONFERENCE
ACCOLADE• Going 2-0
between the pipes and recording a career-best 20 saves against 10th-ranked Johns
Hopkins, Riorden garnered his first career America East Conference Rookie of the
Week on Monday, April 8.ROAD WARRIORSFollowing a
tough 20-19 loss to Drexel on the road earlier in the season, the Great Danes
have won five straight games on the road to improve their record to 6-1 away
from John Fallon Field. UAlbany became just the second team in men’s lacrosse
history to defeat both Syracuse in the Dome and Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field
in the same season (Virginia was the first team in 2009).
FEARLESS FRESHMAN GOALIE• In just
his first nine games of his short career, Blaze Riorden has notably taken down two
storied men’s lacrosse programs, both Syracuse and Johns Hopkins on the road. In
the season-opening 16-15 overtime win against the Orange, Riorden denied 13 of
28 shots. The freshman goalie followed up that performance with a career day of
20 saves against 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins to lock up the 10-9 win.
• Riorden
has recorded 10 or more saves in eight contests with a game-best 20 against
Johns Hopkins on Apr. 5, 2013.• Riorden
has held teams to 10 goals or less five times this season and currently holds an
11.87 goals against average.• His 118
saves this season put him ninth in program history for saves in a season. Kevin
Rae holds the program’s top two spots with 216 and 217 saves in back-to-back
seasons (2004 & 2005).
100 WINS AND COUNTING• March 26’s
16-7 victory over Harvard marked the Great Danes fifth win of the season and
lowest goals allowed total this season.• The win
over the Crimson marked head coach Scott Marr’s 100th career victory, all of which
have come at UAlbany in 13 seasons. Coach Marr currently owns a career 103-93
record.
TEWAARATON AWARD WATCH
LIST• On Feb.
22, the Great Danes found three of their players were in contention for this
prestigious award (the equivalent to the Heisman in College
Football).• Lyle,
Miles and Ty Thompson are the three current members on the
watch list. The Thompsons will find out in late April if they are one of the 25
remaining candidates.
THOMPSON EARNS THIRD WEEKLY
HONOR• The
University at Albany men’s lacrosse sophomore attack Lyle Thompson dazzled on the offensive
end last week, recording nine goals and eight assists to grab his third America
East Conference Player of the Week honor.• Thompson,
a Tewaaraton Award Nominee, has continued to add on to his offensive resume.
Last week, he was able to tally 17 points, eight against Harvard and nine
against Binghamton. He has totaled 71 points on the season which leads the
conference.SENSATIONAL SOPHOMORE• Sophomore
attack Lyle Thompson has dazzled with his stick
on the offensive end this season. Following his freshman season of 38 points on
22 goals and 16 assists, he has already doubled his assists numbers through nine
games with 42.• The
Onondaga Nation, N.Y. native is currently second in the nation in points per
game (6.45), assists per game (3.82), and is 13th in goals per game
(2.64).• Lyle’s 71
points place him seventh for most points in a season at UAlbany. Cort Kim holds
the program record with 89 points.

THE THOMPSON TRIO• Brothers
Lyle and Miles and their cousin Ty have been the driving force to why the Great
Danes have the nation’s No. 1 offense. The family trio has combined for 150
points on 87 goals and 63 assists.• In 27
games playing together, all three have scored in the same game in 18. UAlbany is
11-7 when all three Thompsons score in the same game and are 6-2 this
season.
STREAKING• The Great
Danes’ Miles and Ty Thompson are battling one another to see who
can go the longest recording a point. Currently, Miles leads the group in the
point column with 33 consecutive games of tallying a point and Ty owns the goal

gamesOFFENSIVE FIRE POWER• The Great
Danes are rolling on all cylinders on the offense, boasting the nation’s No. 1
offense through the first nine games of the season.• In all
three offensive categories, Points, Assists, and Goals per game, UAlbany leads
the nation. The Great Danes average 15.11 goals (Maryland the next closest with
14.7), 9.11 assists (Drexel the next closest with 8.4), and average 24.22 points
per game (Cornell the next closest with 22.00).• In nine
games, the Great Danes have recorded 10 goals or more in eight and are 6-2 in
those games.
D-FENCE• For a team
that scores at such a high pace, the Great Danes have had success in their
defensive end. UAlbany is 3-0 when it holds opponents under 10
goals.• The close
defense of Jon Newhouse, Jack Nickla, and Cody Futia have produced a combined 25 caused
turnovers, one-third of the teams total. The trio has also recorded 45
groundballs.
THE GLUE MAN• Junior
Kevin Glueckert has been the primary
face-off specialist for the Great Danes this season. He has converted on 49.0
percent (142-290) of the face-offs this season.•
Glueckert’s 49.0 percent face-off wins is fourth-best in the conference. His 142
total wins is most in the conference through 11 games.
OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN(S)• The Great
Danes announced that they will have three captains for the 2013 season. Seniors
Mike Woods, Jack Nickla and Will Fuller will lead UAlbany through
its 15-game schedule in 2013.• Fuller is
a part of the 1st team midfield for the Great Danes. Woods is a part of the 2nd
team midfield and Nickla is a member of the close defense.
A DIVERSIFIED GROUP• The Great
Danes, from the state of New York, has natives from NY, in seven other different
states and in two provinces of Canada (Alberta & Ontario.• The states
other than New York include Massachusetts (2), Ohio (1), Illinois (2), Florida
(2), New Jersey (1), Connecticut (1) and Pennsylvania (1). In the provinces of
Canada, two are from Ontario (Mike Woods & Jon Newhouse) and one from Alberta
(Matt Mackenzie)
PRESEASON FAVORITES• Four-time
America East champion University at Albany is the conference’s men’s lacrosse
preseason favorite as announced by the league office on Tuesday, Jan. 31,
2013.• The Great Danes, who reached the
conference’s championship game for the ninth time in 11 years last season,
received three first-place votes and 22 points to earn the poll’s top spot. UMBC
(one first-place vote) and Stony Brook (two first-place votes) are tied for
second with 20 points apiece. Hartford is fourth (13 points), followed by
Binghamton (10) and Vermont (5).
