#20 UAlbany Clashes With #11/10 Johns Hopkins For A Friday Night Battle On ESPNU

Fresh off back-to-back wins including a conference-opening 21-8 win in dominating fashion against Binghamton, the 20th-ranked University at Albany men’s lacrosse team heads to Baltimore, Md. for a Friday night contest against No. 11/10 Johns Hopkins at 7 p.m. at Homewood Field. The game will be on ESPNU at 7 p.m.

• This is the third time in the series history that the game will be played on April 5th. The Blue Jays took both contests and held the Great Danes to exactly six goals in each.

IN THE POLLS• UAlbany moves back into both national polls at No. 20. The Great Danes have either been receiving votes or in the Top-20 since the preseason poll.
• Johns Hopkins fell from eighth to 10th in this week’s USILA Coach’s Poll.

LAST WEEK• On Tuesday, the Great Danes had their best defensive effort, holding Harvard to a season-best seven goals. The Crimson were also held to 13 shots on goal and 22 groundballs, both of which were UAlbany season-best.
• The win over the Crimson marked head coach Scott Marr’s 100th career victory, all of which have come at UAlbany in 13 seasons.
Skullcandy's Newest Headphone; Bass You Can Actually Feel!• On Saturday, UAlbany turned up the heat and dominated Binghamton for the full 60 minutes. Defensively, the Great Danes held the Bearcats to a season-best 11 points.
• The Thompson trio racked up 13 goals and five assists and freshman goalie Blaze Riorden held the Bearcats to six goals on 17 chances.

SCOUTING THE BLUE JAYS• Sophomore attack Wells Stanwick paces the Johns Hopkins offense with 33 points on 18 goals and 15 assists. Last season, Stanwick came off the bench against UAlbany and recorded three points on one goal and two assists in the 17-6 win.
• Between the pipes, senior goalie Pierce Bassett has started in all eight games. Bassett is holding opponents to 8.55 goals per game which is 17th in the nation. The senior’s .570 save percentage is 12th in the country. Bassett has started in all three previous games against the Great Danes, going 3-0 and holding the opponent to an impressive 5.33 goals per game.

LAST MEETING

•UAlbany and Johns Hopkins last met exactly one year ago to the date on April 5, 2012. The Blue Jays jumped out to an early 7-1 lead through the first 30 minutes. Current senior midfielder John Ranagan paced the offense with two goals.
• Miles and Ty Thompson jumped into the offensive mix, scoring the Great Danes first three goals in the second half to keep the contest within seven, 11-4.

•Ranagan rattled off two of the team’s final five goals to secure the 17-6 win.

SERIES HISTORY


• This is the 12th meeting in series history for UAlbany and Johns Hopkins
• Johns Hopkins owns the all-time series at 10-1. The lone victory for UAlbany came in the 2007 season-opener on February 24. The Great Danes won the close-contest 8 to 7.

• In 11 games against the Blue Jays, the Great Danes have never recorded a double-digit scoring affair and have held JHU under 10 goals once (7 goals in 2007).

THOMPSON EARNS THIRD WEEKLY HONOR• The University at Albany men’s lacrosse sophomore attack Lyle Thompson dazzled on the offensive end last week, recording nine goals and eight assists to grab his third America East Conference Player of the Week honor.
• Thompson, a Tewaaraton Award Nominee, has continued to add on to his offensive resume. Last week, he was able to tally 17 points, eight against Harvard and nine against Binghamton. He has totaled 64 points on the season which leads the conference.

SENSATIONAL SOPHOMORE• Sophomore attack Lyle Thompson has dazzled with his stick on the offensive end this season. Following his freshman season of 38 points on 22 goals and 16 assists, he has already doubled his assists numbers through nine games with 39.
• The Onondaga Nation, N.Y. native is currently leading the nation in points per game (7.11), assists per game (4.33), and is tied for eighth in goals per game (2.78).
• The sophomore attack is currently riding an 18-game point streak, dating back to March 31, 2012.

THE THOMPSON TRIO• Brothers Lyle and Miles and their cousin Ty have been the driving force to why the Great Danes have the nation’s No. 1 offense. The family trio has combined for 129 points on 74 goals and 55 assists.
• In 25 games playing together, all three have scored in the same game in 16. UAlbany is 9-7 when all three Thompsons score in the same game and are 4-2 this season.

OFFENSIVE FIRE POWER• The Great Danes are rolling on all cylinders on the offense, boasting the nations No. 1 offense through the first nine games of the season.
• In all three offensive categories, Points, Assists, and Goals per game, UAlbany leads the nation. The Great Danes average 15.11 goals (Maryland the next closest with 14.7), 9.11 assists (Drexel the next closest with 8.4), and average 24.22 points per game (Cornell the next closest with 22.00).
• In nine games, the Great Danes have recorded 10 goals or more in eight and are 6-2 in those games.
