UAlbany Women's Lacrosse Takes Care Of Business Against Boston University, 17-9

BOSTON, Mass. – Bouncing back from a tough 9-2 loss against Stony Brook last week, the University at Albany women’s lacrosse team imposed its will on Boston University in a 17-9 win, on Wednesday, April 3 at Nickerson Field. Senior attack Rachael Burek paced the Great Danes by tying her career best of nine points on three goals and six assists. Senior attack Jess Antelmi recorded her fifth game of the season of four points or more with four goals on six shots. Junior defender Kathleen Lennon owned the draw circle, recording nine of the team’s 13 draw controls. Lennon has now tallied 74 draw controls of the season, which ties the program’s second-most draw controls in a season (held by Nikki Branchini in 2010). A tale of two halves was the story of the UAlbany and Boston U. contest. The first half was written off as the offensive half, watching 19 combined goals scored and the Great Danes holding a 12-7 lead through 30 minutes. Boston U. (3-6, 0-2 America East) opened the game with a quick 3-1 lead with just over 10 minutes gone in the game. BU’s Tewaaraton Award Nominee Danielle Etrasco scored the team’s first two goals and was followed by an unassisted goal from Elizabeth Morse to grab the early two-goal lead. UAlbany (7-4, 2-1 America East) answered back with six consecutive goals in a nine-minute span to regain the lead, 7-3, with 11:06 remaining in the half. Antelmi scored back-to-back-to-back goals in a two and half minute span during the stretch. The Terrier’s Etrasco rallied back with two more goals of her own and was helped out by teammate Jill Horka’s goal to cut the deficit to one, 7-6, with 9:40 left. The Great Danes capped off the half by scoring the final five of six goals to extend their lead to five, 12-7. Burek tallied three goals in the run, including the final two goals of the half. The second half of the contest was described as a UAlbany defensive showcase. The Great Danes held the Terriers to two goals on six shots in the final 30 minutes. The UAlbany defense forced six BU turnovers on seven possible clear attempts. UAlbany used four different scorers in a five-goal span to expand its lead to nine, 17-8, its largest of the game. Sophomore midfielder Nichole Eamer led the charge with two goals. BU’s Morse tacked on one more goal on a free-position opportunity to cut the deficit to eight, 17-9, with 2:11 remaining in the contest. However, UAlbany held on for the final two minutes of the game to improve its conference record to 2-1, while Boston U. fell to 0-2. UAlbany goalie Anna Berman had a strong performance between the pipes, recording eight saves on 17 chances in 60 minutes. Boston U. goalie Christina Sheridan had a game-high nine saves on 26 chances in the loss. The Great Danes return home on Saturday, April 13 against UMBC at John Fallon Field. The game is slated for 1 p.m.
