PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Syracuse redshirt
senior David Hamlin (New Hartford,
N.Y.) was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the first time
in his career, and sophomore Kevin Rice (Skaneateles, N.Y.) was picked to
the conference’s weekly honor roll for the second straight week on Monday, April
1.
Hamlin anchored an Orange defense that harassed
Canisius into more turnovers (22) than it had shots (14) in a 17-5 victory
against the Golden Griffins on March 29. No starting Canisius attackman had a
point in the game and Hamlin was responsible for shutting out Sam Connors. In
addition, Hamlin picked up a team-high four ground balls and set a career best
with five caused turnovers.
Rice tallied a personal-best six points (three
goals, three assists) versus Canisius to lead the Orange offense. Rice is
averaging 4.3 points per game in his last three contests.
St. John’s attackman Kevin Cernuto was named the
BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after recording four goals and three
assists in the Red Storm’s 12-10 win over top-ranked Notre Dame.
Reilly O’Connor (Georgetown), Jack Connelly
(Providence), Greg Fitzmaurice (Providence) and Kris Alleyne (Rutgers) joined
Rice on this week’s honor roll.
Syracuse
returns to action Saturday, April 6 with a road match against Princeton. Faceoff
is slated for 5 p.m. on ESPNU.
