ALBANY, N.Y. – Junior Brittany MacFawn was within one out of throwing
her second no-hitter in three games and her second career perfect game as the
University at Albany Softball team defeated crosstown rival Siena College, 3-0,
at Albany Field. The Great Danes took home their 11th straight win,
tying a Division I program record.
With 6.2 innings in the books, MacFawn had
shortstop Shannon Jones down to her final strike when the senior hit a double to
the centerfield fence. The Great Dane starter is no stranger to this position.
In 2011, MacFawn threw back-to-back no-hitters, one was a perfect
game.
UAlbany
scored all three of their runs in the second and third inning. Senior catcher Lindsey Stout opened up the scoreboard with an
RBI double to right center. She drove in junior Charlise Castro.
Two
more were added off the bat of freshman shortstop Maggie Cocks. She cleared the bases with a
two-run RBI single in the third inning, giving the Great Danes a 3-0
lead.
UAlbany
(16-7, 3-0 AE) recorded six hits total, leaving five on-base and stealing two
bags. Freshman Annie Johnson snagged her 16th base of
the season. She came into today’s contest tied for 13th in Division I
softball with an average of .71 steals per game.
Sophomore
Antonia Edwards (1-5) was tagged with the loss for Siena. She went three
innings, allowing five hits, three runs and striking out one. The Saints dropped
to 6-16 (0-0 MAAC) on the season. MacFawn (9-5) pitched her 14th
complete game of 2013. She struck out 11, walking none and allowing one
base-hit.
“Brittany
[MacFawn] shut them down today,” said head coach Chris Cannata. “Shannon [Jones] is Siena's top
hitter, not who we were hoping to see for the last out today. Regardless,
Brittany is pitching at the top of her game right now."
The Great Danes will quickly turn around
and travel to play the University of Maine in a three-game America East series
on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. on
Saturday (a doubleheader) and noon on Sunday.
