AKRON, OH – The
Akron Aeros scored twelve runs on thirteen hits over the final three innings to
defeat the Binghamton Mets, 13-3, Sunday afternoon at Canal Park. The Aeros
erased a one-run B-Mets lead with four runs in the sixth, five in the seven and
three more in the eighth.
The defeat, Binghamton’s
worst since a 10-0 loss to the Bowie Baysox on July 20, 2012, snapped their
season-opening three-game winning streak.
For the third time in the
series, the B-Mets drew first blood. Following a hit batsman and balk by Akron
starter Paolo Espino in the third, Darrell Ceciliani roped an RBI double into
the right field corner. Blake Forsythe added to Binghamton’s lead by shooting a
run-scoring double down the third base line.
The Aeros touched B-Mets
starter Tyler Pill for just one run over his first five innings of work. Pill
walked Tyler Holt to start his Double-A debut, but settled down to retire nine
straight, including five strikeouts.
Pill’s strong outing
unraveled in the sixth as the righty failed to retire any of the four batters he
faced in his third trip through the batting order. Jesus Aguilar’s RBI single
with the bases loaded tied the game at two and chased Pill from the
game.
Reliever Mark Cohoon
inherited the bases loaded and allowed all three to score. Carlos Moncrief gave
Akron the lead on a sac fly and Roberto Perez and Giovanny capped the rally with
RBI singles.
After Binghamton cut the
deficit to two on Ceciliani’s RBI single in the seventh, the Aeros returned
serve with another big inning. The first five batters in the seventh all reached
safely against Cohoon and scored to give the Aeros a 10-3 lead. Akron tacked on
three more runs on one hit and two errors in the eighth against Adrian Rosario
and Chase Huchingson.
Cook (1-0) allowed one run
in 2-1/3 innings of relief to collect the win. Pill (0-1) suffered the loss,
allowing five runs on five hits. The B-Mets bullpen combined to allow seven
inherited runners to score.
The B-Mets (3-1) continue
their weeklong roadtrip and start a three-game series against the Erie SeaWolves
Monday night at 6:35 PM. RHP Erik Goeddel makes his B-Mets debut against RHP
Victor Larez. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 6:20
PM
