West Lebanon, NY: The high
banks at Lebanon Valley Speedway have opened their doors to the world of dirt
car racing for it’s now 61st season. The fastest half
mile dirt high bank oval was in full operation this past Saturday night, with a
great crowd on hand even under threatening skies.
The highlight of the night was the return
of the Big Block Modifieds to the mighty high banks. And just like
old hat, returning 2012 High Point Champion, Brett Hearn made sure that he
planned to add another to his long list of Championships to come.
The 30 lap
feature started with a full field of 28 cars at the green. Mike
King’s #55K was out front early, but young gun Kyle Armstrong took over by lap
3. The challenging weather and track conditions made jockeying for
positions a little scary, but all the drivers seemed to adjust pretty
quickly.
J.R. Heffner made
it to the top spot by lap 7 until the caution flew for the 2nd time
on the night for a 5 car melee on the front stretch. The #55K of
King, 98S of Kolby Schroder, #77J of Keith Flach, and #87x of Paul Gilardi were
all done for the night with heavy damage.
With that
caution, Hearn powered his #20H to the 2nd spot, and challenged
Heffner for the point. By lap 14, Hearn was out front, but on a
restart Heffner looked to have gotten back by, but the caution flew again before
completing the next lap, so Hearn was handed back the lead.
At the green,
Hearn checked out on the field for the remaining 16 circuits capturing the
win. Kenny Tremont Jr powered his way up to 2nd,
followed by Heffner, Matt Sheppard, and Brian Berger.
The Pro Stock
feature saw 18 cars tack to the high banks with Robbie Speed, Frank Twing, and
Rob Yetman battle it out for the win. With just a handful for laps
in, the rains began again and quickly made for a tough battle on the top 3.
By lap 8, Yetman
seemed to master the slick conditions and made his way by Speed and Twing for
the lead. Then, the rains came by lap 11, and it was all
over. Yetman scored the opening night win, followed by Twing,
Speed, Jay Corbin, and Jason Casey.
Jim Williams
scored the win in 4 Cylinder Single Cam, and Todd Goldstein took the checkers in
Dual Cam.
In Purestocks,
the winners were Ed Hatch in PS #1, Steven LaRochelle in PS#2, and James Hatch
in PS#3.
Next Saturday
