12-Run Inning Highlights Two UAlbany Wins to Conclude Rebel Games

Kissimmee, Fla. - The University at Albany softball team scored a season-high 12 runs in one inning, winning their final two games at the Rebel Games on Tuesday, March 19, by a combined score of 23-5. UAlbany (12-7) heads into conference play next weekend on a seven-game winning streak. They've won eight of their last nine.

Rider: In one inning, UAlbany nearly surpassed their highest single-game run total this season -- scoring 12 runs against the Broncs in the second inning. In total, the Great Danes tied a season-high 14 runs for the second straight day, defeating Rider, 14-3. Junior Vicky McFarland and freshman Maggie Cocks each had three RBIs to lead the scoring-frenzy.

Nearly all of the highlights from this game were in the second inning. 14 batters came to the plate for UAlbany as the Broncs committed three errors, causing all 12 runs to go unearned. After driving in the game's first two runs an inning earlier, freshman Maggie Cocks broke open the game with her second two-RBI double to put the score at 6-0. Freshman Lindsey Stout extended the lead to 10-0 with an RBI single.

The inning continued as McFarland crushed a three-run shot to center field to give the Great Danes a 14-0 lead. Sophomore Jess Tate twice reached base on a throwing error. Three runs crossed the plate in her two at-bats.

Junior pitcher Emily Ostrom improved to 6-2 on the season. The right-hander went the complete game, allowing two earned runs and walking three. Ostrom is currently riding a five-game win streak. Freshman Ali Meagher was tagged with the loss for Rider (3-18).

The game was called after five innings by mercy rule. UAlbany strung together 12 hits, with five players recording multi-hit performances. McFarland along with freshmen Annie Johnson and Maggie Cocks each had five total bases.

UW-Green Bay: The Great Danes followed game one with nine more runs on their way to a 9-2 win over UW-Green Bay (1-11). Junior Charlise Castro hit her fourth homer of the season to lead the Great Danes.

UAlbany led the game off with a six-run first to continue their trend of high-scoring innings. Cocks drove in the game's first run, a single to left field to drive in McFarland. A double by freshman Kelly Costello put the score at 4-1, as she drove in two. This was followed by another two-run double by junior Lauren Alcorn to cap off the first inning at 6-1.

McFarland and Alcorn each scored another run before Castro finished the game off with a solo shot in the sixth inning for the Great Danes' ninth run. McFarland, Alcorn and Cocks each recorded two hits in the win.

Junior Brittany MacFawn held UW-Green Bay to five singles, allowing two runs, one earned, and striking out five. Ashley Nannemann took the loss for the Pheonix. She went two innings allowing four earned runs and four hits. She walked three.

The Great Danes will open conference play on Saturday. They travel to Boston University to play three games in a rematch of last year's America East Championship. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
