WASHINGTON, D.C. – Syracuse junior defenseman Brian Megill (Arthur, N.J.) has been selected as a nominee for the 2012 Tewaaraton Award, presented by Panama Jack.
Megill joins 24 other male college lacrosse stars on the official list of nominees released by the Tewaaraton Award Foundation on Wednesday, April 25.
The Tewaaraton Award has been presented to the national player of the year every season since 2001. This year’s award will be handed out on May 31 at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.
An Inside Lacrosse Midseason First Team All-American, Megill leads the Orange in ground balls (48) and has caused a single-season school record 32 turnovers. His average of 2.46 caused turnovers per game ranks fourth nationally. In addition, Megill has one goal, two assists and a 52.9 faceoff winning percentage (18-34) this season.
Against Hobart on April 17, Megill recorded his first collegiate goal, passed out an assist and collected a career-high nine ground balls. He was the first SU player since Matt Abbott in 2009 to notch at least one goal, one assist and nine ground balls in the same game.
The list of the 25 Tewaaraton nominees will be pared down to five finalists whose names will be announced on May 10. Syracuse has had at least one finalist each of the last four years, including 2008 Tewaaraton Award winner Mike Leveille.
