DEREK MALTZ, BRIAN MEGILL SELECTED TO BIG EAST LACROSSE HONOR ROLL

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Syracuse sophomore attackman Derek Maltz (Ashburn, Va.) and junior defenseman Brian Megill (Clark, N.J.) were both named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Monday, April 23 for their performances against Hobart and Georgetown last week.

Syracuse split the two games, defeating Hobart, 13-12, to retain the Kraus-Simmons Trophy, and losing 10-8 to the Hoyas. Maltz became the first SU player since 2008 (Kenny Nims vs. Villanova) to record six goals in a game with his career-high six tallies at Hobart. Five of Maltz’s goals came in the opening half to propel the Orange to a 10-4 halftime lead.

Megill scored his first career goal in the Hobart game. He also passed out an assist and picked up a career-high nine ground balls to become the first Orange player since 2009 (Matt Abbott vs. Princeton) to finish with a goal, an assist and at least nine ground balls in the same game. Against Georgetown, Megill forced three turnovers to break the Orange single-season record for caused turnovers. He has 32 caused turnovers on the year, eclipsing the previous standard of 31 held by Joel White.

Megill also picked up four ground balls against the Hoyas and held Georgetown attackman Zac Guy scoreless. Brian Casey (Georgetown), Blake Burkhart (Rutgers) and Scott Klimchak (Rutgers) joined Maltz and Megill on this week’s honor roll. Sean Rogers of Notre Dame recorded four points, including three goals, in a 10-7 win against Villanova to earn BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Georgetown goalie Matt Winter was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for his 12-save effort against Syracuse. The Orange concludes regular-season play on Saturday, April 28 at Notre Dame. Faceoff is slated for 5 p.m. at Arlotta Stadium.
