West Lebanon, NY: The Valley of Speed was under the gun this past Saturday night from Mother Nature as looming skies of darkness and rain closed to the doors to other speedways for the night. But the mighty high banks huddled in the valley along NY Route 20, was locked a loaded to run a full schedule of racing.
The racing devoted turned out for another fantastic night of racing action at Lebanon Valley Speedway as Heavy Hauler and What a Guy Used Cars present the night of racing action. With darkening skies on the horizon, once the racing action started, it was gonna be wall to wall action to till the checkers, or the rain.
At the start of the Big Block Modified feature event, the rains began to fall, but not hard enough to destroy the racing surface. Despite some objections, the green flag flew with the mighty Matt Quinn aboard his #20Q took off to a strong start to take control of the early part of the 30 lap feature. The caution flew for a total of 3 times in the first 10 laps of the event for minor incidents.
Those cautions gave the management another opportunity to evaluate the safety of the speedway, but the racing continued as Quinn resumed the lead on each of the restarts. Battling behind Quinn was Kenny Tremont Jr and Donnie Corellis, but all eyes were on the #20H of Brett Hearn as he began his bid for a return visit to victory lane.
The suspense was short lived, as Hearn got passed Tremont and Corellis by lap 11, and set his sights on Quinn. Once Hearn got to Quinn, there was nothing he could do, as Hearn got by on lap 16, and checked out on the field.
That pass put the period on the end of that sentence, as Brett Hearn scored the back to back victory. Donnie Corellis fought his way to finish2nd followed by J.R. Heffner, Matt Quinn, and Kenny Tremont Jr to complete the top 5.
Earlier on in the evening, the Pro Stocks took to the speedway for their 20 lap feature event. Out front early was the #23 of Chuck Towslee with Nick Hilt hot on his heels. Caution flew on lap 6 for an incident on the backstretch involving 3 cars, but all would continue. Towslee took off again, but by lap 7, Chad Jeseo returned to Championship form and took over the top spot from Towslee.
Jeseo had a commanding lead coming down to a handful of laps left on the Kokosa Oil Lap Counter, but the #8 of Jay Corbin wanted to make sure he had to work for it. With 2 laps remaining, Corbin caught the #25 and began to set up a possible pass for the lead. The two went door to door for the remainder of the race, looking for that opening to take it home.
As the checkers were in the air, the two were side by side all the way down the frontstretch with Corbin inching out the win by mere inches to score the back to back win. Jeseo had to settle for 2nd followed by Paul LaRochelle, Robbie Speed, and Towslee.
The last feature event of the night was the return of the LV Sportsman for their 20 lap feature event. At the point was the #21 of Ryan Darcy who took control of the front of the pack with ease. But once again the skies began to threaten, and the rains began to show again.
This time, the field struggled to keep the speedway race-worthy as caution on lap 4 slowed the field, but not the rains. The green flew again, with Darcy still in command of the field. Brett Haas worked his way to the rear deck of Darcy by lap 7, but something in the power plant of the #21 began to go away.
By lap 9, the #55 powered by Darcy as the #21 faded for good for the night. As the field completed lap 10, Darcy was not able to exit the speedway so the caution slowed the field. The rains also kicked in and the track quickly went from ok to bad in a hurry,.
As the field attempted to restart, it was also quickly realized by management that the track was gone and caution flew immediately and the field was frozen. After another lap or two under caution, it was clear the track was not coming back, therefore the race was official checkered handing Brett Hass the opening night win. With field frozen from lap 10, Sean Mandel would finish 2nd, followed by Frank Harper, Brian Sandstedt, and Steve Meilleur completed the top 5 in the rain shortened event – the first since 1990.
At the beginning of the evening, the Purestocks completed their feature events as Ray Hall Sr returned to winners circle in Purestock #1. Purestock #2 saw Chris Streeter take the checkers, and in Purestock #3 James Hatch also went back to back after another last lap pass for the win. Steve Loomis took the checkers in the 4 Cylinder Dual Cam class, whereas the Single Cam was postponed due to rain and will be rescheduled.
