ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose rattled off a 12-2 run that bridged the two halves to provide a fitting conclusion to its inaugural season as the Golden Knights cruised to an 18-6 victory over American International College in the 2012 regular-season finale for both squads today at Sullivan Field. Eight different players found the back of the net for Saint Rose (7-6), which tied its season-high with 18 strikes in the contest.
Sophomore attackman Brett McAuliffe (Watertown, NY/Watertown) paved the way for Saint Rose (7-6) with four goals. Meanwhile, freshman attackman Kevin Fleming (Owings, MD/Northern) and freshman midfielder Kris Miller (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) chalked up two goals each.
Sophomore goalie Nick Longo (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) hit double-digits in saves for the ninth time this year that allowed the Golden Knights to maintain their cushion. Longo turned aside 12 shots throughout three quarters of action.
The Yellow Jackets (0-14) received three goals and an assist from freshman attackman Bryce Serriello (Centerville, MA/Barnstable). Senior goalie Eric Whettell (La Salle, Manitoba/Sanford Collegiate) picked up 14 saves as well.
Saint Rose led just 3-2 after 15 minutes, but junior attackman Rich Bamberger (Brimfield, MA/St. John’s) registered back-to-back tallies to ignite the aforementioned scoring outburst. Fleming and McAuliffe struck over the final two minutes of the second period to send the Golden Knights into the break up 9-3.
Saint Rose came out and scored six unanswered goals to start the second half to ensure a winning campaign in just its first season of competition. Bamberger fed Fleming just 31 seconds into the third quarter and freshman midfielder Louie Buccella (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) punctuated things by converting a feed from freshman midfielder Alex Schiponi (Kensington, MD/Walter Johnson) at the 4:27 mark.
Freshman midfielder Brian Kennedy (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) finally silenced the run for American International via a man-up marker with 1:47 left in the third.
Prior to the game, senior midfielder and team captain Joe Pompo (Fairmount, NY/West Genesee) was honored with a brief ‘Senior Day’ ceremony in recognition of his Saint Rose career. Pompo went out and scored two of the squad’s first three goals to start the day.
