UAlbany Falls To UMBC, 17-16, In Overtime, In America East Men’s Lacrosse Action

Baltimore, Md. - Scott Jones took an assist from Rob Grimm with 2:17 left in overtime to lift UMBC to a come-from-behind victory over UAlbany in America East Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium. UAlbany drops its first league game to fall to 3-9 overall and 3-1 in league play, while the Retrievers improve to 5-6, with a 3-1 conference slate.

 UAlbany scored the first two goals of the game, within a minute of one another. Joe Resetarits netted an unassisted shot at 12:56, while Will Stenberg took an assist from Rocky Bonitatibus at 12:22 to put the Great Danes up, 2-0. However, UMBC scored the next three goals, with Zach Linkous finding the net twice around a Derek Bertolini tally. The Great Danes responded, scoring three straight to end the first quarter. Ty Thompson tied the game with an unassisted shot, before Resetarits and Stenberg each scored their second goals of the game to put UAlbany up, 5-3. Miles Thompson scored to start the second quarter, before UMBC netted three consecutive goals to tie the game up at 6-6. Once again, the Great Danes responded, going on a three-goal run to take a 9-6 advantage before the half. Ty Thompson scored his second goal with an assist from Resetarits, before Lyle Thompson converted a man-up goal with 4:45 left to play. Resetarits kept the rally going, netting a final goal with just six seconds on the clock before the half. The teams alternated goals through the third period, keeping UAlbany on top by three for the majority of the quarter before UMBC ended with two straight to cut the lead to 12-10. Miles Thompson scored his second of the game to start the quarter, while Dean Steinmann and Ty Thompson also scored in the period. Matt Gregoire and Scott Jones recorded back-to-back goals for UMBC to end the period.

UAlbany looked to put the game away to start the fourth, getting three straight from Ty and Miles Thompson and Resetarits, taking a 15-10 lead with just 9:48 left to play in the game. Scott Jones ended the run, taking an assist from Tim Lang with 7:30 on the clock. Ty Thompson netted his fifth goal of the game with 6:07 to play, putting UAlbany ahead, 16-11. The Retrievers were not giving in, however, scoring five straight to tie the game at 16-16. UAlbany got two good looks at the net before the final horn, but could not convert, and the game headed to overtime. The Great Danes won the faceoff to start the overtime period, and Lyle Thompson got two shots off that missed the mark. UMBC recorded a good clear and moved into the offensive zone, taking a timeout to set a play. Grimm connected with Jones to get the ball past freshman goalkeeper Max Huber and secure the win for the Retrievers. Huber played the whole game in the net for the Great Danes, making nine saves. UMBC's Adam Cohen stopped six shots in a complete-game effort between the pipes. The teams both recorded 37 shots each, while UMBC held a 35-30 advantage in ground balls. UAlbany will return to action on Tuesday, hosting cross-town rival Siena at 7 p.m
