HORTON PUNCHES NCAA TOURNAMENT TICKET

INDIANAPOLIS – Senior Matt Horton (Troy, NY/Hoosic Valley) will once again represent The College of Saint Rose at the 2012 NCAA Division II Golf Championships. Eighty teams and 32 individuals have been selected to participate in regional competition, which will be conducted May 7-9.

Horton, who is the only individual in program history to garner four consecutive NCAA Tournament selections, will play in the Atlantic/East Regional that is being held at the East Course at Hershey Country Club in Hershey, PA. Wilmington University (DE) received the top-seed in the East Region, while Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) champion Indiana University (PA) garnered the top-seed from the Atlantic Region.In all, 20 teams and eight individuals comprise the field of 108 student-athletes will play for an NCAA finals berth.

Horton, who along with Jamie Bacon (’09) and Bob Cain (’05) are the lone individuals in program history to make more than one NCAA Tournament appearance, led the Golden Knights with an adjusted scoring average of 75.27. He is just the fourth Saint Rose player to receive an NCAA Tournament bid in the program’s 11-year history.

Horton received first-team Northeast-10 Conference All-League honors for the fourth year in a row after carding a 36-hole total of 153 (76-77) to finish tied for eighth overall among the 60 entries at the conference championships in October. A week later, Horton captured medalist honors at the Dominican College Charger Challenge via a two-under par 142. Horton carded a 73 and followed that up with a final round 69. The latter tied his career-low and is also a school record.

The top five teams and the top two student-athletes not with a team from each regional (regardless of region) will advance to the national championship May 15-19 at the Cardinal Club Golf Course in Louisville, KY.
