VESTAL, N.Y.—Sophomore pitcher Demi Laney fired a six-hit shutout and sophomore second baseman Jessica Bump drilled a three-run home run, leading Binghamton (16-26, 7-10 AE) to a split against Stony Brook (32-13-1, 11-2-1 AE) in an America East softball doubleheader on Saturday at the East Gym Field. The Bearcats won the opener 3-0 but suffered a 2-1 loss in the second game.
Laney, who now has a pair of shutouts this season, struck out seven batters and did not issue a walk. She got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first inning and did not allow a run past second base the rest of the game. Her record is now 7-8.
Stony Brook starting pitcher Allison Cukrov, who leads the conference in win and ERA, retired the first 10 batters of the game. With one out in the top of the fourth inning, however, she surrendered an infield single to senior outfielder Meghan Tucker. Senior designated hitter Chelsea Horne drew a two-out walk, setting the stage for Bump, who drilled a two-strike pitcher over the left field wall.
In the nightcap, however, it was a fateful miscue that decided the outcome. Binghamton had taken a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Horne doubled home Tucker. In the top of the third inning, however, the Seawolves scored a pair of runs on a two-out throwing error by the Bearcats.
Cukrov pitched the second game as well and held Binghamton hitless the final six innings. Her record is now 21-7.
Despite not allowing an earned run, junior pitcher Rhoda Marsteller was tagged with the loss, dropping her record to 3-8.
Bump finished the afternoon 2-for-6.
Binghamton and Stony Brook will conclude their weekend series with a single game on Sunday at noon.
NOTES: Bump now has three home runs this season ... prior to the first game, Horne, Tucker, senior pitcher Kristen Emerling and senior outfielder Briana Andrews were honored as the four graduating players competing in their final home series.
