AKRON, OH – Akron starter Giovanni Soto
struck out nine over seven innings to lead the Aeros past the Binghamton Mets
3-1 Wednesday night at Canal Park. The loss extended the B-Mets losing streak to
three games, their longest skid of the season.
After Soto worked a perfect
first to start his night, the Aeros took advantage of a B-Mets defensive miscue
in the bottom of the inning. Davis Stoneburner led off by shooting a groundball
to Rylan Sandoval at short. Sandoval, in his first game of the season at short,
bounced his throw to first past Oswaldo Navarro, allowing Stoneburner to move to
second.
The Aeros second baseman
advanced to third on a wild pitch by B-Mets starter Mark Cohoon and scored on
Ryan Rohlinger’s groundout to second.
Akron added to their lead
in the fourth with a three-hit attack. Adam Abraham doubled to left centerfield
and scored one batter later on a double from Thomas Neal. Bellows drove Neal
home by shooting a single up the middle.
Given a three-run lead, Soto cruised to his
third victory of the season. The southpaw ran right through the B-Mets lineup
from the third inning to the fifth, retiring seven in a row.
Mark Cohoon’s night ended
after five innings. The lefty allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and
struck out three in the losing effort. He was replaced by Armando Rodriguez, who
supplied three perfect innings of relief.
Binghamton finally got on
the board in the sixth. Oswaldo Navarro followed Matt den Dekker’s leadoff walk
with a single to center. Reese Havens collected his third RBI of the season with
another single.
Soto escaped further damage
by striking out Jefry Marte and turning a line drive back to the mound into a
double play by doubling off Havens to end the inning.
The 20-year-old from Puerto
Rico capped his night with a perfect seventh. He collected nine strike outs and
allowed just one run on four hits over a season-high seven innings.
Nursing a 3-1 lead, Kyle
Landis entered from the pen and worked around a walk and a single to post a
scoreless eighth. Eric Campbell led off the ninth with a double to center, but
the rally fell short as Landis retired three straight to earn his first
save.
The win was Akron’s eighth
straight and league-leading eleventh at home. Soto (3-0) collected the victory,
while Mark Cohoon (2-3) had his two-game winning streak snapped.
The B-Mets (12-13) complete their four-game
series against the Aeros and wrap up their week-long roadtrip tomorrow night at
7:05 PM. RHP Collin McHugh takes the ball for Binghamton against RHP Mason
Radeke. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 6:50 PM on
Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
