Baseball Falls To Binghamton, 2-1, In First Game Of America East Tournament

 


Stony Brook, N.Y. – Mike Augliera held the Great Danes to one hit, throwing a complete game to lead Binghamton to a 2-1 win over UAlbany in the first game of the 2012 America East Conference Baseball Championship on Wednesday at Stony Brook’s Joe Nathan Field.

Binghamton (23-24) got on the board first with a single run in the top of the second inning. Jake Thomas drew a walk before getting driven home by Zach Blanden. Augliera held the Great Danes scoreless until the sixth, as Jeff Welsh drew a lead-off walk and came home on an RBI single by Nolan Gaige to tie the score at 1-1. The Bearcats regained a one-run lead in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Brian Ruby, scoring Bill Bereszniewicz.

Augliera went 1-2-3 in both of the final two innings to seal up the win for Binghamton. Augliera fanned seven opposing batters in his complete-game effort. Senior Zach Kraham went seven frames for the Great Danes, scattering six hits and striking out six Bearcats. Closer Greg Lutton threw two shutout innings for UAlbany, allowing just one hit.

UAlbany (22-31-1) will face the loser of the 3 p.m. contest between #1 Stony Brook and #4 Maine at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
