MANCHESTER, NH – The Binghamton Mets scored
five runs in the first inning en route to an 11-4 victory over the New Hampshire
Fisher Cats on Friday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. The B-Mets
pounded out 13 hits, including three home runs, and starter Gonzalez Germen
fired seven innings in the win.
Matt den Dekker started the
attack immediately with a leadoff single off starter Deck McGuire. After a wild
pitch moved him to second, Josh Rodriguez gave the B-Mets the lead for good with
an RBI single to right. Raul Reyes followed with a hit and Jefry Marte doubled
Binghamton’s lead with a run-scoring single to center.
After McGuire walked Reese
Havens to load the bases, Juan Lagares produced another run by grounding out to
short. Eric Campbell ended McGuire’s night with a two-run double to right
centerfield. The righty recorded just one out, his shortest career outing. By
the time Fernando Hernandez struck out Pedro Zapata to end the frame, the B-Mets
held a 5-0 lead, the most runs they have scored in the first this
season.
Given a five-run edge,
Gonzalez Germen got off to a bumpy start. The right-hander allowed two runs on
three hits while walking two in the first inning. He escaped further damage by
inducing Brad McElroy to fly out with the bases loaded to end the
inning.
Den Dekker kicked the lead
back to five with a long-overdue home run in the fourth. The center fielder
crushed the first pitch he saw from Matt Daly to right for a two-run shot. It
was Binghamton’s first homer since May 3rd, a drought of 67.0 innings
and 277 plate appearances.
Josh Rodriguez kept the
offense rolling with another homer in the sixth. The shortstop ripped a
three-run shot into the picnic area beyond the left center fielder fence. Eric
Campbell added a solo blast off Aaron Loup in the eighth. It was Binghamton’s
first multiple-homer game since they hit three against the Portland Sea Dogs on
April 15.
Germen settled down after
his spotty first inning, facing the minimum from the second through the sixth.
He surrendered one run on three consecutive hits in the seventh before inducing
AJ Jimenez to bounce into a fielder’s choice to end his night. Germen (1-1)
allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out three in seven frames to earn
his first Double-A victory.
Edgar Ramirez took over in
the eighth and wrapped up the game, allowing one run on three hits in two
innings of relief. Mike McDade tagged him for a solo home run in the
eighth.
McGuire (1-5) suffered his
second loss to Binghamton in 2012. Fernando Hernandez, Matt Daly, Matt Wright
and Aaron Loup combined to allow eight runs in 8.2 innings of relief.
The B-Mets (16-17) look to secure the series
win Saturday afternoon at 1:35 PM. LHP Darin Gorski takes the ball for
Binghamton against RHP Yohan Pino for the Fisher Cats. The Horizons Federal
Credit Union pre-game show begins at 1:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
