BALTIMORE – Former Syracuse University men’s lacrosse stars Roy Colsey and Tim Nelson have been selected for induction into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Colsey and Nelson are members of the eight-person 2012 induction class formally announced by U.S. Lacrosse on Wednesday, May 23.
Jen Adams (player; Maryland), Brian Dougherty (player; Maryland), Missy Foote (coach, Middlebury), Kelly Amonte Hiller (player; Maryland), Jesse Hubbard (player; Princeton) and Cindy Timchal (coach; Northwestern, Maryland, Navy) join Colsey and Nelson in this year’s Hall of Fame class, which will be officially inducted on Saturday, Oct. 20 in a ceremony at The Grand Lodge in Hunt Valley, Md.
Colsey played for the Orange from 1992-95 and helped lead Syracuse to national championships in 1993 and 1995. He was a four-time All-American, earning first-team recognition three times (1993-95). In addition, Colsey was the 1995 recipient of the USILA’s Lt. Donald C. MacLaughlin Jr. Award as the nation’s top midfielder. He finished his SU career with 124 goals and 163 total points.
After spending his freshman year at N.C. State in 1982, Nelson came to Syracuse in 1983 and rewrote the team’s record book in just three seasons. Nelson holds the Orange records for most assists in a game (9), season (67 in 1984) and career (187). He also ranks fifth on SU’s all-time scoring list with 271 points (84 goals, 187 assists).
Including his rookie season with the Wolfpack, Nelson finished his college career with an NCAA-record 320 points (99 goals, 221 assists). His scoring record has since been broken, but Nelson’s 221 career assists still tops the NCAA all-time ledger.
The first three-time winner of the Lt. Col. Jack Turnbull Award (nation’s top attackman), Nelson earned first-team All-America honors three times (1983-85) and helped lead Syracuse to its first NCAA championship in 1983.
Established in 1957, the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame honors men and women who by their deeds as players, coaches, officials and/or contributors, and by the example of their lives, personify the great contribution of lacrosse to our way of life.
