Romero’s Drive Sours Series Finale, 6-4

NEW BRITAIN, CT – Deibinson Romero’s two-run homer in the eighth inning broke a tie game and helped lead the New Britain Rock Cats past the Binghamton Mets by a 6-4 score Thursday afternoon at New Britain Stadium. The loss pushed Binghamton a game under .500 and capped a 3-4 roadtrip for the club.

With the game tied at four in the decisive inning, B-Mets pitcher Gonzalez Germen issued a two-out walk to Matt Rizzotti. The righty paid for the free pass as Romero ripped a 3-1 pitch over the left field fence for his fourth home run of the season. The Rock Cats scored five of their six runs in the game with two outs.

In a game that started in the morning, the Rock Cats wasted no time to grab the early lead against B-Mets starter Jenrry Mejia. In his second start of the year with the B-Mets, Mejia allowed a leadoff single to Estarlin De Los Santos. The shortstop stole second and scored on Chris Herrmann’s single to center. Rizzotti kicked the lead to three by hammering a two-run homer to center.

Binghamton got on the board in the third against starter B.J. Hermsen. Pedro Zapata singled to right and put himself in scoring position by swiping second, his team-leading ninth stolen base of the year. He advanced to third on Matt den Dekker’s single and scored on a passed ball by Herrmann.

After the Rock Cats plated a run in the third on an RBI double from Chris Colabello, the B-Mets began to chip away at the deficit. Reese Havens doubled with one out in the fourth and scored on an Eric Campbell’s single to right. They added another run in the fifth on a single by Raul Reyes.

Den Dekker finally erased the deficit in the seventh. The center fielder launched a 1-2 offering from Hermsen over the right field fence to tie the game with his team-leading sixth homer of the season.

The drive took Jenrry Mejia off the hook. The righty allowed four runs on five hits and struck out five over five innings. Germen (1-3) took over in the sixth and tossed two shutout innings before surrendering Romero’s drive in the eighth. He lost his second straight game.

Rock Cats starter Hermsen scattered ten hits in a no-decision. The righty allowed four runs (three earned) and struck out three over seven innings of work. Southpaw Caleb Thielbar (2-0) put up a perfect eighth and closed out the victory with a shutout ninth.

The B-Mets (22-23) head home to start a four-game series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Friday night at 7:05 PM. LHP Darin Gorski takes the mound for Binghamton against RHP Joel Carreno. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
