Albany, N.Y.
- UAlbany head women's soccer coach Mary-Frances Monroe will join the Boston
Breakers of the Women's Professional Soccer League Elite Division for the team's
home opener on Friday, May 18. The Breakers, who play at Dilboy Stadium in
Somerville, Mass., will host FC Indiana at 7:00 p.m. in front of a sold-out
crowd.
Monroe played for the <![endif]-->
United
States National team from 1996-2000. She also played for the Women's United
Soccer Association's Philly Charge and the Boston Breakers from 2002-2003 and
Women's Professional Soccer in 2010. She was crowned the 2008 WPSL East Player of the
Year. Monroe also played professionally for KIF Örebro in Sweden.
Monroe guided the
UAlbany program to its most successful season at the Division I level in the
fall, going 9-10-1 overall and advancing to the America East Conference
Championship for the first time. The Great Danes won seven straight games going
into the league championship, including a 2-1 victory over Hartford in the
tournament semifinals. Monroe mentored four all-conference players, including
second team honorees Chrissy Klepper and Rebecca Lee.
"I was so excited to get the phone call to
be asked to play in the Boston Breaker's opening match this Friday," said
Monroe, who was four-year college All-American at the University of Connecticut
and UCLA. "I have a lot of amazing memories playing on the Boston Breakers in
the WUSA (the first ever professional league in the United States) and the WPS.
It is great for recruits, future Great Danes, and current UAlbany players to
know that I am still playing in the game at the highest level. I hope I am able
to help guide the younger generation to be our future
leaders."
