MANCHESTER, NH – The Binghamton Mets stroked
three home runs, including a go-ahead blast by Jefry Marte in the seventh, to
defeat the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 7-6 Sunday afternoon at Northeast Delta
Dental Stadium. The three dingers matched a season-high and helped Binghamton
secure their first series win in the month of May.
The see-saw battle saw
Binghamton grab the first lead using a two-out rally against starter Randy Boone
in the third. Rylan Sandoval started the charge with a double and Pedro Zapata
followed by reaching on Mark Sobolewski’s throwing error from third base. Matt
den Dekker extended his hitting streak to nine games with a two-run double off
the top of the right field fence.
The Fisher Cats had a quick
rebuttal in the bottom of the third. With two outs and a runner on, Sobolewski
hammered his league-leading eighth home run of the season to left to tie the
game. After a hit batsman and a single, Brian Van Kirk gave the Fisher Cats the
lead with a two-run double.
The B-Mets answered back
with a pair of longballs in the fifth. Sean Kazmar ripped his first home run of
the season to left field and Matt den Dekker tied the game with a bomb off the
batter’s ere in centerfield. Kazmar’s homer was his first since July
2011.
New Hampshire took the lead right back in
the bottom of the fifth with another two-out hit. Brian Van Kirk laced a
run-scoring single to plate Sobolewski, giving the Fisher Cats a 5-4 advantage.
It was the final inning for Peavey who took the no-decision, allowing five runs
on seven hits over five frames.
Trailing by one with two
men aboard in the sixth, B-Mets first baseman Travis Ozga delivered. After going
hitless in his first 16 at bats against the Fisher Cats in 2012, Ozga dumped an
RBI single to right against reliever Danny Farquhar to score Eric Campbell and
knot the game at five.
Binghamton busted out the
lumber again in the seventh against reliever Aaron Loup. With two outs, Juan
Lagares reached on a throwing error by Sobolewski at third, his second misplay
of the game. Jefry Marte immediately made the Fisher Cats pay by launching a
two-run homer to left to give Binghamton a 7-5 lead. It was Marte’s first home
run with the B-Mets.
After Armando Rodriguez
tossed a scoreless sixth and seventh, the Fisher Cats threatened in the eighth
by putting two men aboard with one out against Jeff Kaplan. After falling behind
Brian Jeroloman 1-0, Kaplan was replaced by Robert Carson. Fisher Cats manager
Sal Fasano countered by pinch-hitting for Jeroloman with A.J. Jimenez. Jimenez
popped out in foul territory to third and Justin Jackson flied out to center to
end the threat.
It did not get any easier
for Carson in the ninth after two singles and a wild pitch put runners at second
and third with one out. Mike McDade cut the deficit to one with a sac fly to
right, but Brad Glenn stranded the game-tying run at second by striking out on
three pitches. It was his eleventh strikeout of the series.
Armando Rodriguez (2-0)
earned the win with his two frames of work and has not allowed a run in more
than 13.0 innings on the hill. Aaron Loup (0-1) suffered his first loss while
Robert Carson collected his first career save.
The B-Mets (17-18) will
enjoy a day off Monday before starting a three-game series against the Trenton
Thunder Tuesday night at 6:35 PM. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game
show begins at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
