HORTON IN CONTENTION AFTER WET OPENING ROUND

HERSHEY, PA – The College of Saint Rose senior Matt Horton (Troy, NY/Hoosic Valley) was one of 108 competitors that concluded round one action this evening at the 2012 NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Golf Regional. The 54-hole event, which features 20 teams and eight individuals, is being held at the par-71; 6984-yard East Course at Hershey Country Club.

A majority of today’s opening round was played in the rain and thus not one student-athlete walked into the clubhouse at even-par or better. Three players are currently tied for first at one-over par. Freshman Jordan Eck (Williamsport, PA/Williamsport) of California University of Pennsylvania, sophomore Thomas Linehan (Dansville, NY/Dansville) of St. Thomas Aquinas College and junior Paul Tighe (Logan, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) of Wilmington University each fired a 72 to put themselves on top of the leader board.

Horton, who is making his fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, currently stands tied for 14th following a six-over-par 77. He began the day on the back nine and proceeded pick up five straight pars before running into trouble on the 15th hole. He rebounded by playing the final five holes one-under thanks to a birdie on hole number five to put himself within striking distance.

Horton is scheduled to resume action tomorrow morning at 8:20 am, while the rest of the field gets going as early as 7:30 am. Following final round action Wednesday, the top-five teams and the top-two student-athletes not on an advancing team (regardless of region) will advance to the national championship May 15-19 at the Cardinal Club Golf Course in Louisville, KY.
